(All questions are compulsory)

Write Short Notes on the following, accompanied by sketches

if/when necessary.

1. (a) Lines Plan.

(b) Utility of Simpson's Rules.

(c) Reserve Buoyancy.

(d) Wetted Surface Area of a Ship.

(e) Displacement, Lightship Weight and Deadweight of a Ship.

(f) Free Surface Effect and Free Surface Correction.

(g) Weight Estimation Of a Ship.

(h) Floodable Length and Permissible Length.

(i) Block Coefficient of a ship.

(j) Frictional Resistance and Residuary Resistance of a Ship.

PART - B 5 X 14=70 Marks

(Answer any 5 of the following)

2. Sketch a typical cargo ship (either general cargo, Tanker or Bulk carrier)
and indicate the following. Bow, Stern, Rudder, Propeller,
Deckhouse, Mast, Main Deck, Bridge Deck, Bulkheads, Hatch
Opening, Bulwark, Anchor, Anchor Windlass, Lifeboats.
(14 Marks)
3. (a) A ship 90 m long is floating at drafts 4.5 m ford, 5.0 m aft. The LCF
is 1.5 m aft of midship. TPC is 10 T, MCTlcm is 120 T.m. Find the new
drafts if a total weight of 450 Tonnes is loaded at a position 14 m
forward of amidship. (10 Marks)

(b) A ship 150 meter long, has a 20 meter beam, has a Load draft of 8
meters, where as the light draft is 3 meters.. Block coefficient at loaded
draft is 0.766 and at light draft is 0.688. Find the Deadweight of the
ship. (4 Marks)

4. A ship 8000 Tonnes displacement has KM =8.7 meters KG= 7.6 meters.
The following weights are either loaded or discharged as mentioned.
• Load 250 T cargo, VCG 6.1 m ,TCG7.6 -m to Stbd side
• Load 300 T Fuel Oil, VCG 0.60 m, TCG 6.1 m to Port side
• Discharge 50 T of Ballast, VCG 1.2 m , TCG 4.6 m to Port side.

Find the Final List of the ship after completion of these activities.

(14 Marks)

5. (a) A box shaped vessel with main dimensions Length 100 m, Breadth
13 .m and Depth 8· meters is floating at 4 m draft even keel in Fresh
Water. If the KG value is given as 4 meters, find the GM value of the
vessel in that condition. (7 Marks)
(b) The same vessel as above is required to be heeled by 1.5 degrees by
Transverse movement of weight. Calculate the weight block required if
the weight shift distance is given as 9 meters. (7 Marks)

6. The normal speed of a ship is 14 knots and the fuel consumption per
hour is given by 0.12 +0.001 V3 Tonnes, where V is in knots.
(a) Calculate the total fuel consumption over a voyage of 1700 Nautical
miles. (7 Marks)
(b) Calculate the speed at which the ship must travel to save 10 Tonnes
of fuel per day. (7 Marks)

7. What is the real purpose of carrying out an Inclining Experiment? What

are the preparations before execution of an Inclining Experiment? What
are the reading taken during the experiment? What are the main
particulars mentioned in the Final Inclining Experiment Report?
(14 Marks)
8. Geometrically Similar Scale Models are used extensively for estimating
the resistance of ships. Describe, step by step, the process of deriving
the total resistance of the ship from the total resistance of the model as
obtained from the model tests. (14 Marks)
