REPORT ON ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TEST AT NEW TOWN WATER
TREATMENT PLANT, NEW TOWN, KOLKATA
INTRODUCTION :-
Electrical resistivity test was carried at 03 (three) points / locations at New Town water treatment
METHODOLOGY: -
This test is conducted as per IS 3043:1987 .During these test Wenner method electrodes
configuration was employed. In this method, four electrodes are driven at equal intervals into
the ground along a straight line at N – S and E – W directions at ERT 01 and ERT 02. At ERT
03 NE – SW was employed and electrode separation S (spacing between two electrodes) are =
05.0m., 1.20m. and 2.50m. A Current (I) is passed through the two outer electrodes (C1 and
C2) and the Voltage difference (V) between the two inner electrodes (P1 and P2). The current
flowing into the ground, produce an electric field, proportional to it’s density and to the
resistivity of the soil strata below. The voltage is measured between the inner two electrode and
therefore, proportional to the field. Consequently, the resistivity will be proportional to the ratio of
the voltage to current.
Soil Resistivity is given by p = 2. π. S. R; whereas p = Apparent Resistivity in Ohm.m., π =
3.1415927, S = distance between two successive electrodes in Meters and R =
observed Resistance in Ohms.
The depth is considered as the distance between two electrode.
INSTRUMENT USED: -
In this test, Resistivity Meter model DDR 2 was used, which is manufactured by Geo
Sensors, Hyderabad. It’s calibration no is GS/18/10-11 calibrated on 17th November, 2018. The
instrument were fabricated jointly by Geo Sensors and National Geophysical Institute,
Hyderabad through a process of National Research Development Council, developed by
NGRI (council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India).
GEOLOGY: -
Sand, sandy clay are predominant in the sub-surface in this areas. Summarized
result of 03 (three) points of Apparent Resistivity in Ohm.m. are given in the table.
