III. Family Information

Are you the first person in your family to go to college? Yes
If yes, please describe what prevented your family members from attending college. If no, please include who in
your family has attended college; which institution they attend; and any struggles or successes they had.
My father immigrated from Mexico to the United States when he was 17 years old. While he was in
Mexico, he only went up to the 9th grade due to the fact that he had to pay for his high school education.
Although he valued education, his main reason to come to the United States was so that he could have a better
future for himself and for his family back in Mexico. My father couldn’t go to college because at the time he
was an undocumented immigrant who had little money and could not afford a college education.
My mother graduated high school here in the United States, but she never had any goals to pursue a
higher education. My mother’s parents, my grandparents, were born and raised in Mexico, and they didn’t have
access to education. The highest grade both of my grandparents went up to was the 2nd grade. When my
grandparents immigrated to the United States, they did so in hopes of having a better and more stable economic
future. When my mother was growing up, my grandpa didn’t push my mom to pursue higher education; he only
pushed her to work to be able to provide for herself and her family. Since my mother was a first generation and
the first of her siblings to graduate high school, she didn’t know anything about the process of applying to
college and she didn’t have to support needed from my grandparents as they didn’t have much experience with
the idea or process of education. My mother didn’t end up attending college because of how unfamiliar she was
with the entire process and idea of it.

Strongest Subject: Math
Please explain: I have always excelled in any of the math courses I have taken. I can easily understand many
mathematical concepts and retain the information. Many of my friends and family members ask me for help
when they are having trouble in math. During my junior year, I took both Pre Calculus and AP Calculus at the
same time. Although I sometimes struggled, I still managed to understand the concepts and pass both classes
with an A.

Most Difficult Subject: Science

Please explain: I have always struggled in my science classes. When I took Biology and Chemistry, I often had
a difficult time understanding the material that was given to me by the teacher. I had to stay after school for

XI. Next Steps

Answer the following in the space provided:
Who inspires you? What attributes do they have they inspire you? What can you do to inspire others?
A person that inspires me is my dad. Some attributes that my dad has is dedication, motivation, and
leadership. He inspires me because he has worked so hard to get to where he is at today. He crossed the border
into the United States when he was a teenager, and he came with nothing but his dedication to pursue a greater
life for himself. My dad’s perseverance inspires me because it gives me hope. It gives me hope that I will be as
successful as him despite any obstacles that are thrown my way.
I can inspire others by trying to encourage them and tell them that they are capable of so much more. I
can help them so that they can try and achieve their goals. I will share my struggles with them so that they know
that together we can overcome any challenges that we are facing.
