3 Program Evaluation
Design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional
learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or
increasing student learning
This artifact is an evaluation of professional learning at my school. The artifact outlines the current
efforts with professional learning opportunities available during the school year for teachers across all
grade levels and content areas. It outlines all of the initiatives that were in place at the time of the
creation of this artifact including the types of professional learning, standards associated with those
opportunities, funding sources, etc.
This artifact demonstrates my mastery of this standard for a variety of different reasons. First, the
artifact shows my ability to design and implement a program evaluation in the beginning pages of this
document. For this section, I had to look at the school as a whole and identify the professional learning
opportunities that were available at the time, which was almost zero. With this information I began the
second stage of the evaluation where I identified the needs of our teachers to implement new and
effective professional learning opportunities. After analyzing the needs of our teachers, I was able to
make suggestions on professional learning opportunities first geared toward specific content
knowledge, such as the need for improved literacy in science. Once we addressed the content needs for
teachers I was able to identify instructional strategies and pedagogical skills that teachers and students
would be able to benefit from such as using research based instructional strategies in place of the
traditional “stand and deliver” model. The final step was to assess the impact on student learning as it
pertains to adjustments to instructional technology integration and improved instructional strategies.
The information that I learned during the creation of this artifact has help me in the capacity of
instructional technology coach to be able to truly address the needs and wants for professional learning
within our building.
The reality of the school was one of the most important things I learned in the creation of this artifact.
From the outside, it seems that we have quality teachers who always use the best instructional
strategies. However, on closer examination this was wildly false. I even found some teachers who were
using such outdated presentation tools that students were more interested in antiquity of the device
that the content that they were supposed to be learning. This really opened my eyes about professional
learning in our building and since then I have been able to advise administrators on how to better
approach these opportunities.
The work that went into the creation of this artifacts impacts the faculty and students because it
acknowledges the work that they have put into their content knowledge and how they can turn their
expertise into more engaging learning opportunities for their students. The impact of the work that
went into the creation of this artifact can be assessed through observations of student engagement as
well as classroom observation of the implementation of new instructional strategies and new
instructional technologies.
