CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND

A novel is a long prose narrative that describes fictional characters and


events in the form of a sequential story, usually. The genre has historical roots
in the fields of medieval and early modern romance and in the tradition of the
novella. The latter, an Italian word used to describe short stories, supplied the
present generic English term in the 18th century. Further definition of the
genre is historically difficult. The construction of the narrative, the plot, the
relation to reality, the characterization, and the use of language are usually
discussed to show a novel's artistic merits. Most of these requirements were
introduced to literary prose in the 16th and 17th centuries, in order to give
fiction a justification outside the field of factual history.Based on the above
review, this paper is arranged so that the reader can better understand and
increase the readers' knowledge about novels as well as intrinsic novels.

B. FORMULATION OF THR PROBLEM


a. What are the intrinsic elements of the novel entitled “ sepasang kekasih
yang belum bertemu”?
b. What are the extrinsic elements of the novel entitled “ sepasang kekasi
yang belum bertemu”?

C. THE PURPOSE
The purpose in writing this paper is to understand the intrinsic and
extrinsic elements of the novel entitled “ sepasang kekasih yang belum
bertemu”.

DISCUSSION

A. SINOPSIS

No matter what others say, Boy Candra finally decided to have a


relationship with the woman he met on social media called Wulan. Day
after day passed by sms, telephone, twitter.Until the moment when Boy
Candra went on vacation together with his friends. He was approached by
a beautiful woman while sitting on the beach. Their closeness continues
continuously without the knowledge of his distant lover, wulan. Indeed,
your suffering like this, must be strong accept the risk of being cheated
without our knowledge. sick? wow don't ask. Everywhere betrayed always
stinging with pain in the heart. Like this wulan.Boy Candra is attacked by
guilt, troubled must choose which one, his girlfriend or mistress who is
always there when we need. Thinking about this for a long time, it turned
out that the decision fell to his girlfriend, Wulan.But for Wulan, it is not
easy to forgive the mistakes made by her lover. He must go away from his
residence to reduce the pain he felt. Boy Candra was confused by Wulan
where he was meeting and looking for Wulan.

B. THE INTRINSIC ELEMENTS

1. Plot

Plot is what happens in the narrative. Every story, from books,


plays and films to newspaper articles and television programs, is based
around plot. Without a plot, the characters would have nothing to do.
It is what engages us as spectators and keeps us interested; however,
plot is not just a series of random events. What turns a story into a plot
is how the events unfold in a casual manner.
In the boy candra novel entitled "lovers who have not yet met"
using a plot or plot forward and backward. The flow forward in this
novel which tells the beginning of the boy's acquaintance with Wulan
who only through social media until they decide to establish a
relationship and until they meet happily.There are some parts that tell

the problem then One of them is a story about boy and Elza Hardi
dating who only lasted for more than three months, because Elza was
his girlfriend boy turns back with his ex-girlfriend.

2. Theme

The theme of a literary work is a salient abstract idea that


emerges from the treatment of its subject matter. Common
themes are love, war, deceit, revenge, fate, destiny, etc.

In the boy candra novel entitled "lovers who haven't met" has the
theme of long-distance relationships or LDR. Can also be interpreted
as a journey of love which means how great a sense of sincerity and
loyalty. In a relationship that must be committed and how to be patient
with the relationship. In this novel also two people who rose from
heartache and disappointed what had happened in the previous love
life.

3. Character / Characterization

A character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story.


Writers use characters to perform the actions and speak dialogue,
moving the story along a plot line. A story can have only one character
(protagonist) and still be a complete story. This character’s conflict
may be an inner one (within him/herself), or a conflict with something
natural, such as climbing a mountain. Most stories have multiple
characters interacting, with one of them as the antagonist, causing a
conflict for the protagonist.

In this novel there are characters and characterizations

1. Boy: He is a romantic guy for words that he often makes.


He is a man who is very sensitive and considerate, but he
often deceives wulan.
2. Wulan sari: she is a woman that is loved by boy. She is a
woman who is attentive to her boyfriend, she is also good
at cooking, and she is a woman who is full of worries. He
is also jealous.
3. Boy's father: he is a wise father, unfortunately boy is his
son
4. Ifandy: he is a boy friend, likes to mock his friend

5. Wita: He is a boy friend, he is diligent and good at cooking
6. Arif: he is a boy friend, he is a person who is not on time
when invited to meet
7. Pak Ali: He is a good fisherman and he hates people who
do not love the environment.
8. Susan: He is a former boy. He was not approved by boy's
father because they had different beliefs
9. Della nursyid: she is boy's second boyfriend, but boy
decides her because he prefers wulan. She is a woman who
is easy to fall in love with
10. Elza Hardi: He is an ex-boy, he is a traitor because he turns
to his ex-girlfriend when dating a boy
11. Vira: she is Wulan's best friend. She is a fierce woman, can
not control emotions.
12. Grandma Wulan: She is a caring grandmother.

4. Setting

The setting of a piece of literature is the time and place in which


the story takes place. The definition of setting can also include social
statuses, weather, historical period, and details about immediate
surroundings. Settings can be real or fictional, or a combination of
both real and fictional elements.

In the boy candra novel entitled "lovers who have not yet met"
there are some place like Padang city, medan city, sikuai island, Aceh
city lightsuk, cafe , Boarding boy. Sidewalk street, shop pingris street.

5. Poin of view

Point of view is the angle of considering things, which shows


us the opinion or feelings of the individuals involved in a situation.
In literature, point of view is the mode of narration that an author
employs to let the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a
story, poem, or essay.

The point of view in this novel is the first-person perspective.
The first-person perspective usually uses the pronouns "me" or
"me" or also "us" (plural).

I deliberately did not reply, let him suspect I was asleep. I just

6. Symbol

In literary works, symbols are present containing words whose


meanings represent other meanings. Symbols are present because the
author or author wants to convey thoughts, feelings, and desires in a
specific language. Something in a literary text can be seen as a
symbol, or not, it is needed in the interpretation of the reader
(Luxemburg, 1989: 69). Meaning of the symbol received for readers
who read the literary work.

The word : time bomb
From the word time bomb there are two phrases namely there is a
bomb which means it can destroy and time which means when it will
happen. So, in the words of the time bomb here it explains that
destruction will come but we are only waiting for the time when it will
be destroyed.

7. Message

The theme of the book implies the problem which the writer raises.
His view and attitude to this problem is revealed in the way he
develops the theme of the story. The most important idea that the
author expresses in the process of developing the theme is the
message of the book. The theme is therefore organically connected
with the author’s message.

The message that can be obtained in this novel is there

C. THE EXTRINSIC ELEMENT

1. Biographical Elements

Boy Candra is known by the name Twitter account @dsuperboy,


including a productive young writer in 2015. Boy Candra (doc:
personal). Boy has published three books this year. From the news that
Olret.com can get a new book that will be published at the end of this
year. Wow right! What's interesting about this one young writer is his
focus on writing romance books. Boy's books are close to the romantic
life of young people.

As for the young people these days, Boy's books are baper.
Evidently two of his latest books (Short Notes for Long Love, and
Dusk, Rain, and Stories That Are Over) become bestseller books in
Indonesia. Boy Candra since the end of 2011, but can only publish his
first book (Origami Hearts) in 2013. Other works that you can read are
the book "After the Rain Has Lone", and "A Pair of Lovers Who Have
Not Met." And Boy Candra's newest book that will be published at the
end of this year, titled "One Day in 2018". Wow, makes me curious
right? Let's wait for further news. Success for Boy Candra with his
books, hopefully more productive again, and can inspire other
Indonesian young people.

2. Social Elments

The situation of the community when writing this novel is to feel


sad when they see the island of Sungkai which is damaged by
irresponsible people.

depicted moral values that are very thick. we are affirmed to


respect each other despite different beliefs but different beliefs
cannot be united

CONCLUSION

Novel is one form of a literary work. Novels are fictional


stories in written form or words and have intrinsic elements. A novel
usually tells about human life in interacting with the environment and
each other. In a novel, the author tries his best to direct the reader to
the depictions of the reality of life through the stories contained in the
novel. Intrinsic elements of the novel are themes, characters, character
of characters, plot, setting / atmosphere, point of view, symbol, and the
message
