ABOUT US

Jadavpur University needs no introduction, not

for its periodic appearance in the media in terms
of being one of the best ranked institutes in the
country or sometimes for being a university with
an opinion, but largely because this university
has hosted some of the most influential minds of
the country and the world, ever since its
inception post-independence. The Department
of Economics, established in the year 1956, is
recognised nationwide for its importance in the
teaching excellence and prospective research
activities. Prof. Amartya Sen, the Welfare
Economist and Nobel Laureate began his career
both as a teacher and a research scholar in the
Department of Economics, Jadavpur University.
The teaching and research activities of the
department in different fields have impressed
the UGC and consequently it has helped the
department to set up a Centre for Regional
Economic Studies under the Special Assistance
Programme in 1987. In 2005 the Department of
Economics became the 4th Centre of Advanced
Studies (CAS) in Economics in India.

7
WHY US?

One of the two universities from Bengal, and five

across the nation to be recommended as the
Universities of Eminence status, sixth among
universities in the National Institutional Ranking
framework, but that is not how we like to describe
Jadavpur University. Jadavpur University is a hub
of new ideas filled with young aspirational minds,
guided by the some of the most dynamic
academic intellectuals and think-tanks of their
respective fields. The Department of Economics
is one such department that was developed as a
brainchild of Professor Amartya Kumar Sen who
was also its first Head, in 1956. With 17 full time
faculty members with the highest qualifications,
the Department of Economics is fortunate to
have some of the best minds and renowned
teachers in the country. Majority of the faculty
members have travelled abroad to participate in
academic discourses. They not only have proved
their abilities by contributing to the subject
through publication in professional journals and
of books, but are also regularly consulted for
their expertise by national as well as state
governments, policy makers, multinational
funding agencies and UN bodies. They also
regularly act as members of Editorial Boards of
national and International Journals.

8 8
The student profile is equally good with the
standard and quality of students being
maintained through rigorous entrance
examinations as well as a very high cut-off
percentage. The department believes in laying a
strong foundation in the undergraduate level
with courses like “Principles of Economics”,
“Mathematical Economics” as well a compulsory
ED course on Mathematics among others. The
foundation is then built upon by venturing into
the advanced territories of Game Theory,
Development Economics and Econometrics in
the PG level. Our course not only believes in
theoretical knowledge but also gives due
importance to application through courses like
Applied Econometrics, where analytics through
the use of the software STATA is taught to our
students.

Being one of the four Centres of Advanced

Studies (CAS) in Economics, across India, we
enjoy the privilege of being witness to periodical
seminars and workshops from renowned
economists all over the world. Therefore if you
want to recruit students who have the backing of
an esteemed institution, armed with the
knowledge of a contemporary course curriculum
and syllabus and ability to improvise in economic
scenarios as a researcher and as an analyst, we
would invite you to come and hire from our
department.

APPLICATION OF
ECONOMETRICS

At JU Economics, both our undergraduate and

postgraduate courses have been designed so as to
allow our students to have a firm grasp on both the
theoretical concepts as well as the practical
applications of subjects like Statistics and in
particular, Econometrics.

From understanding the intuitive basics of Ordinary

Least Squares (OLS) method of estimation, to its
underpinnings with Classical Linear Regression
Model (CLRM) assumptions; our students are made
thorough with the rigors of unbiasedness, efficiency
and consistency of estimators resulting from both
Multiple Linear Regression Models (MLRM) as well
as Limited Dependent Variable Models (Logit and
Probit).

We consider cases of Heteroskedasticity,

Autocorrelation, Multicollinearity among other
violations of the CLRM assumptions and see how
these phenomena can lead to inconsistent or
inefficient estimators. We then explore alternative
methods of estimation like Generalized Least
Squares (GLS) method, Indirect Least Squares (ILS)
method, 2/3 Stage Least Squares (2/3 SLS) method
etc.; under a broader class of models like
Simultaneous Equation System (SES) or Seemingly
Unrelated Regression Equation (SURE).

In addition to the conceptual rigors, our students are

also adept in using statistical packages like Stata and
Excel, with ample expertise in applying them in
projects and surveys, both under and beyond the
curriculum.

ALUMNI SPEAK

“You’d be terribly mistaken if you thought that JU is a place where Economics is taught, just
as a subject. This hallowed institution has been instrumental in shaping my thoughts and
beliefs about how to approach life and take it head on. The Bachelor’s and Master’s
Programme offered by JU allows one to understand the subject in the most innovative of
ways and take control of situations which may seem challenging to others. This place has
not only helped me overcome hurdles but also enabled me to achieve my dreams.”
- Saptarshi Banerjee, CITI GDM, Batch of 2015

“Before the companies ask, “Why hire from JU?” , they should be asking, “What sets apart JU
from the rest?”. What does set us apart from our competition, is not only our
improvisational skills but also our prowess in applying them to a variety of situations.
Therefore, if your company is looking to invest in the future, I can guarantee that this is one
of the best futures you can invest in.”
- Sayantan Baidya, Ipsos, Batch of 2016

“Placement time at JU is always a time laced with jittery anticipation and infectious energy,
interspersed with bursts of ecstasy, relief and celebration. The M.A course is designed in a
manner that makes students capable, not only on the academic front, but also teaches
them to multi-task seamlessly. I strongly believe that recruitment from this department will
be a pleasurable and worthwhile experience, for companies and students alike.”
-Sharoni Goswami, HSBC, Batch of 2017

“The MA Economics course in Jadavpur University is a unique blend of theory and

applications which facilitates the students to not only inculcate the core principles of
economics but also to apply them in real life problem solving. I am confident that the
following batches, endowed with brilliant minds, will carry on this legacy and the
recruitment process will be extremely successful both from perspective of the students and
the recruiters.”
-Sabyasachi Sen, Evalueserve, Batch of 2018

“Placement at the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University is that time of the course
when students are full of energy giving their best in order to showcase their talent. This
institution not only teaches the theoretical aspect of Economics but also helps in
developing an analytical bent of mind and how to take challenges head on. It’s well assured
that the recruitment from this department will be a worthwhile experience for both,
students and companies. I would like to thank the entire placement team and the
departmental fraternity for successful recruitments over the years and for nurturing the
students.”
