Solidworks Project: Engine

I picked this project because I was inspired by an amazing animated model of an engine.

I didn’t know engines worked so I felt like it would be a good learning experience to design

something I had no experience with. I am also planning to major in mechanical engineering so it

would make sense for me to design something like this.

The most difficult part about the project was putting the multiple pieces together. The

hardest part was getting the crankshaft into one piece. I learned how to duplicate pieces and

orient them with the rotate tool. Although I failed, I did manage to learn some basic animation.

However, the most important skill was the ability to manipulate mates to the highest potential

having fixed vs. floating parts to make them move.

This project relates easily to my interests: I love cars. What makes the car move is the

engine, so I believe that it is the most interesting part. Therefore, being able to at least

understand how they work gives me a better idea of how modern came to be and why they

move the way that they do.

Although I did base my design on an image, it looks nothing like the original, and the

individual parts are completely unique.

I learned many technical things about solid works from this project, but more

importantly several things about CAD in general. The most important part about CAD is

planning ahead. It was easy to forget to plan and just get started, but I quickly found out that it

was hard to organize all my ideas. If I had just brainstormed first or had hand draw sketches, it

would have made my life much easier on the computer.
