ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First of all, we would like thank our research adviser, Mrs. Golong, for guiding and helping

us in the making of this study. If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have complete this study

efficiently.

We would also like to thank our parents, for physically and financially supporting us in this

study.

Last but definitely not the least, we would like to thank God Almighty for guiding us and

giving us strength to carry on with this study. We wouldn’t have faith in this study if it weren’t for

him.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The common housefly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), has been an emerging

pest in animal shelters and animal farms across the Philippines. In 2017, the Department of

Environmental and Natural Resources, along with the local governments, have closed a number of

farms. Most of which are housing chickens in traditional sheds.

The issue is being widely reported in the local media and remains a concern for growers

and businesses in general. Flies, originating from the chicken sheds, have affected neighbouring

settlements as well as towns, causing wide spread protests from the public.

In the study entitled “Katol Out of Lanzones (2012)”, the Lanzones Peelings provoke a

repellent effect on mosquitoes. And according to Samantha U., et al (2012), the Lanzones

Mosquito Coil could be used to repel other insects apart from mosquitoes.

Statement of the Problem

Main Problem

Are Lanzones (Lansium dometicum) Peelings effective in the repelling house flies (Musca

domestica)?

Sub-Problems

1. Do Lanzones Peelings have a repellent effect on house flies?

2. Is there a significant difference between the Lanzones Peelings and the commercially

available mosquito coil?

Objectives

Main Objective:

To determine the effectiveness of Lanzones Peelings in repelling common house flies.

Specific Objectives:

1. To determine the repellent effect of Lanzones Peelings on common house flies.

2. To determine if there is a significant difference between the Lanzones Peelings and the

commercially available mosquito coil.

Hypothesis of the Study

1. The Lanzones (L. dometicum) Peelings are effective in the repelling house flies (M.

domestica).

2. The Lanzones Peelings have a repellent effect on house flies

3. There is no significant difference between the Lanzones Peelings and the commercially

available mosquito coil?

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine if the Lanzones (L. domesticum) Peelings have a repellent

effect. This study is significant in the field of consumer chemistry that possesses a repellent effect.

This would become an alternative repellent from commercially available insect repellent.

This study can help find a more environmental-friendly way of insect repellent. The study

also helps in an economical aspect, since they are commonly grown and harvested in the Southeast

Asian countries, including the Philippines. People who harvest and sell these fruits will have an

increase in profit.
Scope and Delimitation

The study will only deal on the repellent effect of the Lanzones peelings. It will only

focus on the effect, not touching or having thoughts about other medicinal effects. The researcher

limit the field or number of experiments that will be done other than finding its repellent effect.

Only common house flies (M. domestica) will be used as subject for this experiment. No

other animals or species shall be tested other than M. domestica only. It is to prevent human

casualties and to test effectiveness on test subjects.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Lansones

Lansones is a tree growing to a height of 4 to 15 meters. Leaves are alternate, 20 to 40

centimeters long, with 5 to 7 leaflets, oblong to oblong-elliptic, 7 to 18 centimeters in length, and

pointed at both ends. Flowers are small, yellow and borne on spikes, solitary or fascicled on the

trunk or larger branches. Fruit is yellowish-white, occurring in bunches on a single stem,

ellipsoid or globose, 2 to 4 centimeters long, with bitter seeds that are surrounded by a

translucent pulp (arillus). The outer skin is thin and tough, abundant in a milky juice. The pulp

occurs in five sections with one well-developed seed.

Musca domestica

The house fly, Musca domestica, is a well-known cosmopolitan pest of both farm and

home. This species is always found in association with humans or the activities of humans. It is

the most common species found on hog and poultry farms, horse stables and ranches.

The effectivity of Lanzones (Lansium domesticum) peelings' extract as mosquito repellant.

The study design was aimed to determine the effectiveness of lanzones as mosquito

repellent. Results showed that the lanzones peelings' extract had a mean protection percentage of

93.33% while the positive control had a mean protection percentage of 96.19%. This means that

the lanzones peelings' extract showed a 2.86% difference from that of the positive control
containing 25% Diethyltoulamide (DEET) which indicates a very promising result as it showed

no significant difference from the commercial insect repellent. Since the average protection rate

of the experimental set-up (93.33%) is much closer to the value of the positive control (96.19%)

than of the negative control (86.67%), researchers conclude that the extract is positively effective

as a repellent. Also, the positive control used in the experiment, which is a commercial mosquito

repellent containing 25% DEET, showed a high percentage protection and is therefore an

effective mosquito repellent. Likewise, the negative control also showed a repellent

characteristic, though not that high compared to the extract.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers will utilize the experimental method specially single factor where the

method of the study involves variables under highly controlled conditions. Since the study aims

to determine the effectiveness of Lanzones (Lansium domesticum) Fruit Peels in repelling

common house flies, this is most appropriate method to use.

Collection of Lanzones

The researchers will gather 1 kg of lanzones fruits from the City Market, Downtown

Area, Tacloban City. The lanzones fruits will be washed with running tap water to rinse off any

dust particles and other foreign contaminants that are present.

Preparation of Lanzones Fruit Peel

The researchers will peel the lanzones fruits by hand. Disposal gloves will be used to

prevent any contamination. The lanzones peels will be sundried for a few days.
Making of the Insect Repellent Coil

Once the lanzones peels are dried, the researchers will pulverize them by using a mortar

and pastel. 40 grams of the pulverized lanzones peelings will then be added into a bowl together

with a equal amount of starch and 90 ml of tap water.

Once fully mixed, the researchers will add the mixture into a molder, and covered it with

aluminum foil. It will then be sundried for a day. Once dried, the finished product will be

removed carefully from the molder.

Application

The researchers will construct two set-ups - one for the Lanzones insect repellant coil and

the other for the commercially available insect repellant. They will then be smoked for 30

minutes by their respective repellant. The flies that transferred to the chamber will be counted for

every five minutes.

Disposal and Decontamination

All disposable equipment such disposable gloves will be disposed properly in the

hazardous waste type trash cans. All other equipment will be washed/sterilized properly after

use.
