50 interesting facts about the Universe

1. The middle layers of space suits are blown up like a balloon to press against the astronaut's body.
Without this pressure, the astronaut's body would boil.

2.The gloves included in the space suit have silicon rubber fingertips which allow the astronaut some
sense of touch.

3.The full cost of a spacesuit is about $11 million although 70% of this is for the backpack and the control
module.

4.It takes 225 million years for our Sun to travel around the galaxy

5. Mercury and venus are the only 2 planets in our solar system that have no moons.

6. A year on Venus is shorter than its day.

7. A spoonful of a neutron star weighs about a billion ton.

8. Neutron stars are the fastest spinning objects known in the universe.

9. The Voyager 1 spacecraft is the most distant human-made object from Earth.

10. It is estimated there are 400 billion stars in our galaxy.

11. There could be 500 million planets capable of supporting life in our galaxy.

12. The universe began with the Big Bang, which happened around 13.7 billion years ago. Now, there are
probably more than 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

13 Around 10 billion light years away, astronomers have found a massive floating water body in Space
which holds 140 trillion times the mass of water in the Earth's oceans.

14. 225 million years is the time taken by our solar system to rotate around the Milky way. Dinosaurs just
began to roam on the Earth, the last time Earth was in its current position.

15. Every year the moon is drifting away from Earth by 3.8 cm. Scientists do believe that in the next
billions of years , the Moon will move out of the field of Earth's Gravity.

16. Jupiter's red spot is shrinking. Jupiter's red spot has been shrinking over the past few decades. the
famous red spot is actually a giant spinning storm, that used to be able to fit three piles of earth.

17. Mars appears red because of its surface is covered with iron oxide (rust).

18. The Universe smells of raspberries, rum, bacon, roasted almonds and gunpowder.

19. There is a massive cloud of alcohol more than 463,000,000,000 kms across, with which we can have
400 trillion trillion pints of beer. This massive cloud of alcohol is 10,000 light years away from us.
20. Earth can become a black hole. This can be achieved by compressing earth down to the size of a
marble, it would collapse by itself.

21. Do you know that most of your body mass is stardust? 90% of body mass is stardust, because all the
elements are created in stars, except hydrogen and helium.

22. Our Galaxy Is on a Collision Course with the Andromeda Galaxy. This impact won’t happen for
another 3 billion years

23. Olympus Mons (A large shield volcano) on Mars is almost three times the height of Mt. Everest, which
is 27 km tall. It is 55o km wide at the base.

24. If you were in a black hole and look out from inside, you would able to see the bank of your own head
and the entire universe in one small patch of the sky.

25. When water boils, it creates thousands of little bubbles on Earth. If water is boiled in space, it would
produce one giant undulating bubble, which is due to lack of buoyancy and convection.

26. There is no convection in space, as there is no gravity in space. Due to this heat of skin won’t rise,
and cool body will perspire, but sweat won’t evaporate or drip, it will just build up.

27. Around 75% of the universe is missing in the form of dark matter and dark energy, according to
scientists which can’t be measured.

28. From outer space, cosmic rays flow throughout our solar system, which are highly energetic particles.
But no one is aware of their origin.

29. R136a1 is the most luminous and massive star, which is 8.7 million times brighter than the sun, it is
present in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way).

30. Universe was hot when it was young and gradually it has become cold. Now at the present time the
background temperature of our Universe is 2.7 Kelvin (which is about −270.45 °C and this is very cold).

31. Do you know that the stars you see in the sky may be dead? As they are billions of light years away
from us and it will take billions of years for the light to reach earth, which means that the stars light which
you see now is billion-year-old lighting. So, they may be dead now.

32. The universe began with the Big Bang, which happened around 13.7 billion years ago.

33. All the planets in our solar system are named after gods except earth.

34. Earth has the greatest density of all planets in the universe and Earth is not round in shape, it is
geoid. Earth has a bulge at the equator.

35. The Moon (Latin: Luna) is Earth's only natural satellite, and the fifth largest moon in the Solar System.
It’s the only celestial body humans have travelled to and landed on.
36. The asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, mostly contains objects
composed of rock and metal, like the terrestrial planets. Beyond Neptune's orbit lie the Kuiper belt and
Oort cloud, home to comets.

37. The brightest things which we observe in the night sky are not actually stars, but the planets Jupiter,
Venus, Mars and Mercury.

38. Galaxies are often found in groups or clusters. One cluster may have 30 or more galaxies in it. The
cluster in which our milky way galaxy is lying is called Virgo cluster.

39. Saturn’s rings are sets of thin rings of ice, dust and tiny rocks, which orbit the planet around its
equator.

40. Dried up riverbeds show that Mars probably once had water on its surface. There is sometimes ice at
the poles and maybe water underground.

41. The future of the Universe may depend on how much dark matter there is. If there is too much, its
gravity will eventually stop the Universe’s expansion – and make it shrink again.

42. The universe has no centre and is constantly expanding (getting bigger) every second – making it
impossible to reach the edge.

43. A black hole is created when big stars explode. Its gravitational force is so strong that nothing can
escape from it – luckily the closest black hole is about 10,000 light-years from Earth.

44. The Earth is about 4.5 billion years old – but that’s only a third of the age of the universe – which is
13.5 billion years old.

45. The moon is the reason why we have tides and waves on Earth. Along with the gravitational pull of
the sun, it moves billions of tonnes of water each day.

46. If two pieces of the same type of metal touch in space they will permanently bond. This incredible fact
is also known as cold welding.

47. Our star, the sun, is so dense that it accounts for a whopping 99 percent of the mass of our entire
solar system. When the sun dies, it will become a red giant and envelop the Earth and everything on it.
But don't worry: That won't happen for another 5 billion years.

48. Roughly 70% of the Universe is made of dark energy. Dark matter makes up about 25%. And the rest
of everything ever observed with all of our instruments, all normal matter adds up to less than 5% of the
universe.

49. There are over 500,000 pieces of "space junk" floating above the Earth, and they're moving at speeds
up to 17,500 MPH.

50. If you are left alone in the space, you can’t cry because no one can hear you and also your tears
won’t ever fall.
