Introduction

A canteen is a place where students buy foods, drinks and other products. It is also where

students eat every recess. It is important that school canteen is organized because it is one of the

important place in the school. It is where the needs and wants of a student can be found in order

for them to have strength and energy to achieve the activities that they will do for the day.

Senior high school students are considered as college students. Their activities and school

works are heavy. They need something that will energized them and those are foods and

somehow, a warm accommodation from the school, where they are learning and spending the

most if their time.

There are school facilities which the students always or often look for. It includes the

classroom, comfort rooms and specially the school canteen. It is very challenging for the school

facilitators to maintain the quality of services they are providing for the students .Because the

needs and wants of students are unlimited and varies.

In Gen. T. De Leon National High School canteen, there are different challenges that

need to be handle specially in terms of the quality of services provided to students. For example

a lot of students complain about the repeating if foods that are being sold and the kinds of foods

display in the canteen. Consequently , the researchers are challenged to conduct this study in

order to help students and the sellers in canteen at Gen. T. De Leon National High School. The

results of this study will serve as feedback mechanism of providing food products of quality of

services
Background of the Study

According to Department of Education, school canteen refers to one of the ancillary

services in the school system that sells food items to the pupils/students and serves as a support

mechanism in the effort to eliminate malnutrition concerns of the school. It can be used as a

laboratory canteen on food planning, preparation, serving, storage and selling. The Department

of Education is strongly dedicated to support student's health and well-being through its

educational program in schools and range activities that offer opportunities for physically fit

individuals who loves eating healthy food.

The Department of Health defined the canteen as a great place to promote an employment

of healthy eating (2013). Canteen is one of the major facilities in the school, it must not just

accommodating but also pleasing not just for the students but also for everyone who is using it.

According to Clements (2016) school canteens help students develop positive attitudes and

behavior towards food. Eating healthy food also makes a big difference to students’ ability to

learn in the classroom.

Several school canteen in the Philippines was reported about food poisoning. One of

those is the Pio Del Pilar school canteen. It was suspended in operation by the Makati

government after more than 100 students in the said school suffered from "food poisoning".

Students bought snacks in the school canteen and started to vomit. The Mayor of the City

promised a thorough investigation of the matter to avoid a repeat of the incident. Different

studies was also conducted about the foods and services f the school canteen. Food safety (2016)

said that school canteen must be a free from dirt and safe environment. Performing safe personal
sanitation for the staff members, being aware about storing of food, keeping food at the right

condition, maintaining neatness are the steps the staff must take to always ensure a safe.

This study is non-experimental, and the researchers will be conducting survey. Survey

research is the collection of data attained by asking individuals questions either in person, on

paper, by phone or online (Rouse, 2017). The researchers will use questionnaires. Questionnaires

will be given to random senior high school students in Gen. T. De Leon National High School.

Its main purpose is to know their perception about the quality of services provided by the school

canteen.
