Contents
This guide provides information to help regional office, suppliers, and authorized learning
partners (HALPs) purchase equipment, install modules, connect cables, configure relate
control equipment, build HCIE-RS laboratory finally.
The physical topology shown in Figure 1-1, Figure 1-2 , Figure 1-3 contain all equipments on the
purchase list.
The frame relay switch (FRSW) is mandatory in all types of experiments. However, this guide
just introduces how to configure FRSW.
FRSW is configured with two 8-interface ASEs ("8ASEs") and also acts as the console server.
It connects to the console port of other equipments by using console cables. Figure 1-1, figure
1-2, figure 1-3 do not show the connection of the console cables. For details about the
connection, see chapter 5 "Console Server Configuration".
2 Equipment Purchasing
You must purchase the equipment based on the experiment requirements. The equipment
purchasing list, named HCIE Equipment List v3.3 is attached in chapter 9 "Appendixes".
This guide only applies to the process of building HCIE laboratory with the equipments
purchased according to HCIE Equipment list v3.3 lab build process.
When you purchase equipments, please be based on requirement of HCIE laboratory. If you
have any question, please send email to YanFei (y84026870/[email protected]) who
comes from Learning and Certification department.
3 Module Installation
The router and console server are modular equipment and you need to install them manually.
To ensure that interfaces names of equipments are consistent with the names in HCIE
laboratory guide and all experiments can be carried out properly and successfully, you must
install the modules of the routers based on the following requirements.
In addition, this section describes only the installation position of the equipment modules,
rather than the installation process and method. For details about how to install the modules,
see the ARG3-Install.pdf and S5700-Install.pdf in chapter 9 "Appendixes".
The R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, BB1-2, BB3 and FRSW(we use the AR G3 equipment to
simulate frame relay switch) are all AR G3 2220E equipments.
The following figure shows the front panel of the AR G3 2220E equipment:
The following figure shows the rear panel of the AR G3 2220E equipment.
The modules are installed on the rear panel based on the slot number.
Table 3-1 describes the modules installed on the R1:

5 (WSIC) Not in use
6 (WSIC) Not in use

4 Cable Connection
The equipment must be connected based on the topology shown in figure 4-1, figure 4-2, and
figure 4-3.
As show in figure 4-2, the serial cables have two ends, the DCE end and the DTE end.
Connect the DCE end of the serial cables to the FRSW when using them to connect the
FRSW and the R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and BB1-2.
Figure 4-4, FRSW use one cable connect it’s G0/0/0 to it’s G0/0/1.
In addition, connect the DCE end of the serial cable to the R1 when connecting R1 and R2;
the DCE end to the R2 when connecting R2 and R3; the DCE end to the R3 when connecting
R3 and R4; the DCE end to the R4 when connecting R4 and R5; the DCE end to the R5 when
connecting R5 and R6; the DCE end to the R6 when connecting R6 and BB1-2; the DCE end
to the BB1-2 when connecting BB1-2 and R1.
Ensure that proper models are used for different types of equipment based on the mapping
provided in Table 4-1.

To implement remote experiments, the console server is used in the experiments to provide
unified out of band management for equipment. Two 8ASE modules are equipped on the
server to implement this function.
You are advised to use console cables to connect the console server and other equipment as
required in Table 5-1.

3. Configure the IP address for the console server to connect to the actual network.
Connect one Ethernet interface of the console server to the actual network, and configure
the IP address and default gateway (default routing) based on the network requirements.
4. Connect the console server to the controlled equipment by using the contra-Telnet.
Start the Telnet client on a PC, and log into Console server. On Console server, use the
command telnet 127.0.0.1+<port number> to log into the device.
Device name and port number shown in the following table:
6 FR Switch Configuration
The experiment also involves the FRSW(we use the AR G3 equipment to simulate frame
relay switch). However, the students are not required to learn the configuration of the FRSW.
If you need to configure the FRSW, run the following commands:
#

The contra-Telnet requires standard console cables and the two ends of the cables must be
RJ-45 ports. You are advised to make the cables manually. You can make the console cables
by following the method of making straight-twisted pair cables. The wire sequence is as
follows:
Port Type\No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Async White Orange White Blue White Green White Brown
Orange Green Blue Brown
Console White White White White Blue Green Orange Brown
Brown Green Blue Orange
You must use the standard equipment contained on the equipment list in chapter 9 "Error!
Reference source not found.Appendixes" when building the laboratory.
The non-standard equipment may cause problems including but not limited to the following
items:
1. The commands are incompatible, or the interface names are not consistent with the ones
in the lab guide.
2. The non-standard equipment is not compatible with devices and protocol features of
HCIE.
