Sentence Fragments

Fragments are sentences without a verb, such as:

People swimming in the ocean.

The old house across from the school.

On the SAT, sentence fragments are usually made in two ways:

With Wh-words (who, which, where, when, whose):

The man who drives the ice cream truck.

One city which is known for its delicious pasta.

Or with gerunds:

Many dogs barking when they sense a threat.

Baklava tasting sweet because of immense amounts of sugar.


With Relative Nouns

1. Cats which are afraid of humans.

2. The place where I live.

3. A tree which grows apples is called an apple tree.

4. A person who believes in nothing is called a cynic.

5. Berlin, which was once divided by a massive wall.

6. Jakarta, which is the capital of Indonesia, has a pollution problem.

7. Taking a siesta, which is a short period of rest in the middle of the work day.

8. Chemicals which are poisonous are referred to as toxic.

9. Scientists who study earthquakes.

10. John Keats, who was a skilled writer, died very young.

11. In the early 10th century, when Rome was in decline.

12. Maps that show features of the terrain as well as cities.

13. My favorite crustacean is the lobster, which is usually red.

14. No one who lives in Istanbul can deny its traffic problems.

15. Coca Cola, which was invented in the late 19th century and was originally sold as a
kind of medicine.
With Gerunds

1. Margaret and Jen playing tennis five days a week.

2. Those people eating excess amounts of fast food.

3. Although he has traveled all over the world, Can has never been to Nepal.

5. Because they get tired easily, sloths sleeping the majority of the day.
