CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the Study

Ship Bridge or Mock bridge simulators have been used within the maritime

world for decades, both for engineering and training purposes. They are

essentially virtual vessels with mock-up bridges fitted with real consoles and

maneuvering handles navigating in real-time in a virtual world replicating future

reality. The use of simulation technology for training purposes has been a feature

of several industries for many years. The maritime industry is one outstanding

example of the use of simulation. By using their learning tools and learning

outcomes the shipping industry will gain benefit from their experience in that.

Conducting simulation training to enhance the competency of masters and

watch-officers will help to prevent marine accidents and environmental pollution.

According to Meurn (1990), the recorded grades for 31 courses involving

233 three- to four-person cadet watch teams (approximately 900 cadets) over a

10-year period (October 1985 to March 1994) were reviewed. The objectives are

to examine the application of instructional systems design concepts, to

quantitatively identify trends in cadet performance over the course of instruction,

and to develop insights and lessons about the application of simulator-based

training for third mate candidates with limited, prior nautical experience.
Page |8

In this premise, the researchers are interested to investigate the extent of

knowledge of BSMT students in University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue

towards the satisfaction of the students of the said respondents. The findings of

the study aims to form a possible plan of action to enable the aspiring seafarers

to be aware of how this simulator may help them in certain situations they may

face when entering the stage of seafaring.

Page |9

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored to the theory of (Chislett, 1996); the process

included maintaining the existing Convention, with an emphasis on the

acquisition and evaluation of skills, while urging the use of simulators as an

effective training tool. This theory supports the study as it tells that using

shipboard simulators will help the maritime students or mariners to enhance their

skills in navigating when they’re onboard. This would also help them to reduce

casualties in the ocean. Having knowledge or skills in navigation minimizes the

risk while sailing because you’ve know the proper way of navigating and on how

to use the particular equipment to navigate.

According to Dotong (2014), Physical plant and facilities are major

considerations in developing the proficiency of the students to handle equipment

and machines needed for their respective fields of specialization. Making these as

requirements for the program of study to be utilized by the students is very

important for improving the confidence and competence. This theory relates on

the study of the researchers as it talks about the consideration of facilities that

may develop the proficiency which can make the students more confident and

competence on what they are tasked because of the help of simulators.

Carey, Cambiano and De Vore (2002), states that satisfaction actually

covers issues of student’s perception and experiences during the college years.

Hence, this will bring the institution to a competitive environment, service

P a g e | 10

oriented establishments are under the pressure of demonstrating that their

services are customer focused and that continuous performance improvement is

being done. Being satisfied on something makes a person more competitive on

what he/she is doing.

This theory was stated by USCG (1993), the granting of credit for

simulator training as a substitute for required sea time is referred to as remission

of sea time. Recently, the USCG stated that it will encourage training and

simulator use by expanding the practice of sea-time remission. The theory has

helped the researchers study as it said that the seafarers should be trained to

use the simulator to better visualize it as they navigate.

According to Rooij & Van (1992), that the process of using simulation

identifies entire classic advantages such as risks related with actual systems

operation, avoidance of damage in case of an accident and or injury and

avoidance of high costs. Simulators are known to be repeatable and can simulate

rapid activities. This theory supports the study as it talks tells the importance of

using simulator can identify the risks during the actual operation onboard, and it

can keep away from accident cases that will costs a lot of money.

According to NTS (2011) “Maritime simulators can be utilized to handle

the complete environment of maritime industry. The fidelity of simulators can

differ from 360 degrees complete mission simulator to a desktop workstation.

This theory says that through use of simulators the maritime environment can
P a g e | 11

administer completely; however, it is not really completely similar to other

technology that can manage the environment.

Matzdorf (2003), states that emphasized that despite rhetoric of added

value, facilities management suffers a dearth of objectively researched, publicly

available information concerning the impact of facilities on businesses at the level

of market sectors or individual organizations. Many institutions view facilities of

high standard as a very important factor to students’ choice of school. This

theory of Matzdork supports the study because the schools with good facilities

are really being looked after by parents of students so that their children can

really gain a greater understanding of something they need to know in

connection with their profession to be adopted one day.

Review of Related Literature

According to Beard (2014), Customer satisfaction is the metric you can

use to reduce customer churn. By measuring and tracking customer satisfaction

you can put new processes in place to increase the overall quality of your

customer service. This supports the researchers’ study as it talks about the

satisfaction of individual that helps them increase the quality service of a

particular subject.
