Health food is a general term applied to all kinds of foods that are considered more
healthful than the types of foods widely sold in supermarkets. For example, whole grains,
dried beans, and corn oil are health foods. A narrower classification of health food is
natural food. This term is used to distinguish between types of the same food. Fresh fruit
is a natural food, but canned fruit, with sugars and other additives, is not. The most precise
term of all and the narrowest classification within health foods is organic food, used to
describe food that has been grown on a particular kind of farm. Fruits and vegetables that
are grown in gardens treated only with organic fertilizers are organic foods. They are
neither sprayed with poisonous insecticides nor refined after harvest.
In choosing the type of food you eat, you have basically two choices:
inorganic processed foods, or organic unprocessed foods. A wise decision should include
consideration of allegations that processed foods containing chemicals are proven to be
toxic. It also states that the vitamin content is greatly reduced in processed foods.

Should Ads be Banned from TV Program?
Dear Editor,
I am writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during
my favorite programs. I think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.
First, ads are nuisance. They go on for a long time and there are so many. Sometime
the duration for ads is longer than the program itself.
Second, ads give a bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy
unhealthy food like beers, soft drinks, candies, etc. In other words, they make people
want things they do not really need and cannot afford.
Finally, it seems that ads play an important role in the programs people watch. There
are lots of ads in the programs, watched by a lot of people. Meanwhile, some programs
which are not so popular are stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even though
those programs may be people's Favorite.
For those reasons, I think TV stations should stop showing ads. They interrupt
programs, and have bad influence on people and they sometimes put a stop at people's
favorite shows. I am sick of ads and now I watch movie in the cinema.
Sincerely yours .
Masarani S.W.

spread as far as Aceh to the West and the
present state of Malaysia to the North. And

Text 4: for questions 54 - 58

Rainforests are one of the most complicated environments on earth. They are recognized worldwide as
containing the richest source of plants and animals and are believed to contain nearly three-quarters of all the varieties of
life on earth. This is remarkable because rainforests cover only about six per cent of earth’s land surface.
Rainforests are the oldest major ecosystem, having survived climate changes for more than one million years.
They provided habitats for more species of plants, animals, insects and bird than any other environment found on your
planet. Scientists estimate that between 60 and 90 per cent of all species of life are to be found in rainforests.
Unfortunately, the widespread destruction of many of the world’s rainforests has caused a significant decline in the
number of plant and animal species on earth.
Rainforests influence both our local and global climates. For example, between 50 and 80 per cent of the
moisture in the air above rainforests comes from the rainforest’s trees. If large areas of these lush rainforests are cleared,
the average rainfall in the area will drop. Eventually, the area’s climate will get hotter and drier. This process could
convert rainforests into a sparse grassland or desert.
Rainforests are also able to absorb over 90 per cent of the rainfall in their leaves and mosses. By doing this, they
are able to slow down water run-off by gradually releasing the water over time into streams and rivers. This helps to
control soil erosion and flooding.
Rainforests are vital to the earth in helping to recycle carbon and oxygen. Carbon dioxide (CO 2) is the gas put
into the air globally by humans, mainly by the burning of fossil fuels (for example in cars and factories). Rainforests are
able to remove carbon dioxide from the air and return oxygen in its place. This is why our global rainforests are often
called the Earth’s’ lungs”.
Rainforests are major producers of earth’s oxygen. In fact, scientists believe that nearly 50 per cent of the earth’s
oxygen is produced by rainforests in the Amazon region alone. Nearly 40 per cent of the world’s carbon is contained in
the trees of the rainforests. As rainforests are cut down and burned, carbon dioxide is released into the earth’s atmosphere.
Eventually, as this gas builds up the atmosphere, leading to what scientists call the enhanced greenhouse effect.
To sum up, the role of rainforests are essential for human life. It creates equilibrium in our environment and its
resources are significant for human beings survival.

Health food is a general term applied to all kinds of foods that are considered more healthful
than the types of foods widely sold in supermarkets. For example, whole grains, dried
beans, and corn oil are health foods. A narrower classification of health food is natural
food. This term is used to distinguish between types of the same food. Fresh fruit is a
natural food, but canned fruit, with sugars and other additives, is not. The most precise term
of all and the narrowest classification within health foods is organic food, used to describe
food that has been grown on a particular kind of farm. Fruits and vegetables that are
grown in gardens treated only with organic fertilizers are organic foods. They are
neither sprayed with poisonous insecticides nor refined after harvest.
In choosing the type of food you eat, you have basically two choices: inorganic
processed foods, or organic unprocessed foods. A wise decision should include
consideration of allegations that processed foods containing chemicals are proven to be
toxic. It also states that the vitamin content is greatly reduced in processed foods.

BIRDS
Birds belong to a class of warm blooded vertebrate animals with feathers covered
bodies. Next to the mammals, birds are the most important group of land-living vertebrates.
All birds have feathers, although in some types, particularly those that cannot fly, the
normal structure of the feathers may be much modified and be downy, woolly, or straw
like. The forelimbs of birds are modified into wings. The bony part of the tail, except in the
very earliest fossil birds, is very short, and the visible tail is composed of feathers only.
The teeth are absent except in some fossil forms. As in mammals–t he only other group of
warm-blooded animal–the circulation is highly perfected so that there is no mixing of
arterial and venous blood, but the arrangement of veins and arteries by which this is
accomplished, is different in the two groups. Birds have keen hearing, although they have

Text 2 – for questions number 6 - 10

Giraffes are tall and interesting animals. Male giraffes are usually about six
meters tall. Half of the giraffe's height comes from its neck, which is longer than its
legs.
A giraffe has big brown eyes which are protected by very thick lashes. Since it
lives in parts of Africa which are usually dry with a great deal of dust, the lashes are an
important source of protection. It can also cover its nostrils in order to protect its nose.
It has brown spots on tan skin and this coloring helps protect the giraffe. The giraffes
also have two short horns on its head.
Like the camel, the giraffe can go a long time without drinking water. One
source of water is the leaves which the giraffe eats from trees. Since it is so tall, the
giraffe can reach the tender !eaves at the top of a tree.
Giraffes usually live in small herds and often feed with other animals. A baby
giraffe is two meters tall at birth. It can stand up by itself within a few minutes and can run
well in about two days.

it can gallop away at about fifty kilometers per hour or stay to fight with its strong legs.

Text 2 – for questions number 6 10

Once upon a time there lived as neighbors, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit was a good
shot and the bear, being very clumsy, could not use the arrow to good advantage.
The bear was very unkind to the rabbit. Every morning, the bear would call over to
the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with the bear to
the other side of the hill. The rabbit, fearing to arouse the bear's anger by refusing,
consented to go with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family.
Indeed, he shot and killed so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and
his family had loaded themselves and packed all they could carry home. However, the poor
rabbit could not even taste the blood from the butchering, as the gluttonous bear would
throw earth on the blood and dry it up. Poor rabbit would have to go home hungry after
his hard day's work.
The bear was the father of five children. The youngest bear was very kind to the
rabbit. The mother bear, knowing that her youngest child was a very hearty eater, always
gave him an extra large piece of meat. The baby bear did not eat this extra large piece of
meat. Instead, he would take the meat outside and would pretend to play ball with it,
kicking it towards the rabbit's house, and when he got close to the door he would give
the meat such a great kick that it would fly into the rabbit's house. In this way, the poor
rabbit would get his meal unknown to the papa bear.

Text 5: for questions 13 – 15

With money we can buy the things that we need every day. And there are many
things that money can do.
Money is first of all a means of exchange. If you want to exchange some books that
you do not need for a shirt, you may try to find someone who needs your books and who has
the shirt that you want. But it is often hard to organize an exchange. It is easier to sell the
books and then buy the shirt that you like.
Money is also a means of measuring the value of other things. It is easier to say how
many rupiah a cow costs than to say that it has the same value as five goats. We can also
store value with money. It does not spoil as fish or fruits or vegetables do when they are
sold. The cost things, of course, may change as time goes on and money that you have today
may be less in the future. If it loses a lot of its value, money will be a bad means of storing
value. Then it will spoil as farmer’s production spoil.
Finally, money is a means for making payments. You may buy a bicycle now and pay
for it in five months, and make a payment of one-fifth on the cost every month. This is better
than buying one-fifth of a bicycle at a time and not riding it until you have bought all parts.
That is, if you have to always make your payment on time.

33. Why do we need money? The followings are the reasons, except … .
A. to make us easier to get thing we need.
B. to know the value of other things.
C. it is difficult to do a barter now.
D. money loses its value easily.
E. money does not spoil as farmer’s production.

34. Paragraph 4 shows that … .

A. payment should be done on time
B. money is not practical to buy bicycle
C. we must have enough money to buy bicycle
D. bicycle can be ridden when we have paid it completely
E. barter can’t function effectively when we want to pay something on credit

35. Why is farmers’ production not good as a means of payment?

A. It is hard to hold.
B. It is easily damaged.
C. It is difficult to find.
D. It does not have much value.
E. It takes so much space.

The following numbers are not based on the above texts.

Vehicle manufacturers should take some responsibilities for the serious air pollution
in the city by planting five trees for every motor vehicle they produce, environment experts
said.
Zulfan A Rambe, operational director of Indonesian Hazardous Materials and Waste
Research (IHWaR) Foundation told a discussion in commemoration of World Tree Day on
Nov. 21 trees must be planted to balance for the pollution the city vehicles are responsible
for.
We will propose to the city administration to oblige the automotive manufacturers to
plant five trees for each motor vehicle they produce.
“The administration should make regulations about corporate responsibilities to deal
with the pollution problem.
”Environmental technology expert Eddy Soentjahyo said motor vehicle emission has
contributed up to 70 percent of air pollution in the city, which has more than 5.5 million
motor vehicles.
Experts have said open green spaces one alternative solution to deal with air
pollution, because it reduces carbon emission by absorbing pollutants and reload source of
oxygen to clean the air.
They said trees can improve drainage by preventing soil erosion and absorbing
rainwater. “The automotive industry also has the responsibility to provide green areas as the
solution of pollution problem,” Eddy said.
Manufacturers should join together to buy land in the city where trees could be
planted, he said. Eddy also suggested property developers consider making green areas on
rooftops to absorb the sun heat.
Daud Silalahi from the University of Padjajaran in Bandung keeps losing its open
green space due to residential and industrial developments.
Some 9 percent of Jakarta’s city area is made up of “open green space”, said city
administration, but the 2007 Law on Spatial Planning stipulates a city should provide at
least 30 percent of its total size for open green space.
“What I (am) concerned (for) the most is that we have the law without
implementation procedures,” Daun said.

COMMUNICATION SATELLITES

Astronauts have journeyed off the

planet earth and out into space. Ventures into
space have led to the latest tool into long-
distance communications – the communication
satellite. The satellite is equipped with the
radio receivers and transmitter. Rockets boost
it into orbit, and the force of gravity keeps it
from flying off into space. The communication
satellite is the earth’s captive, circling the
planet in space. The satellite acts as a
television relay station. Engineers on the earth
bounce television signals off it at an angle,
and the signals come down at a different
angle to receivers on another continent.
Television signals are blocked by mountains,
the earth’s curvature, or sometimes by
building. Therefore, they have to be relayed
from one transmitter to another in order to
travel long distances.
In 1962, the first important United
States communication satellite, Telstar I, was
placed in orbit. Television engineers in Europe
bounced a picture off Telstar, and viewers in
the United States saw it. For the first time
people sat at home in New York and watched
something happening in London or Paris at the
moment it took place.
In 1965 the United States launched
Early Bird, the first commercial communication
satellite and Rusia launched Molniya I. Today,
people in many parts of the world watch live
television from other continents.
The United States also launched
Palapa, the communication satellite, for
Indonesia. The Indonesian government
bought this satellite. The existence of the
Palapa satellite has helped the development of
communication in Indonesia. It is great
importance for the people in Indonesia
because Indonesia consists of thousands of
islands.

20. The communication satellite is …

A. a kind of television relay station.
B. the earth’s captive, circling the planet in space.

A. The role of Palapa in Indonesia.
B. The launching of Palapa satellite by United States.
C. The great importance of the Palapa satellite.
D. The development of communication satellite in Indonesia.
E. The reason why Indonesian government bought the Palapa.
22. Why do television signals have to be relayed from one transmitter to another in order to travel
long distances? Because ….
A. they are transmitted by communication satellite.
B. the satellite acts as a television relay station.
C. people in many parts of the world watch live television from other continents.
D. they are blocked by mountains or buildings.

FLOOD

Flood is an overflow of an expanse of

water that submerges land. It is included one of
the most frightened disasters in the world. This
disaster brings a lot of bad effect to nature and
people.
There are three kinds of bad effect that
are caused by flood; primary effects, secondary
effects and long-term effects. First is about the
primary effects. The examples of primary effects
are physical damage and casualties. Physical
damage can damage any type of structure,
including bridges, cars, buildings, sewer
systems, roadways, and canals. From casualties,
people and livestock die due to drowning. It can
also lead to epidemics and waterborne diseases.
The next is secondary effects. The
examples are water supplies, diseases, crops
and food supplies and trees. Water supplies
mean contamination of water. Clean drinking
water becomes scarce. Diseases mean
unhygienic conditions. Spread of water-borne
diseases. Crops and food supplies mean
shortage of food crops that can be caused due
to loss of entire harvest. However, lowlands
near rivers depend upon river silt deposited by
floods in order to add nutrients to the local soil.
And Trees mean non-tolerant species can die
from suffocation.
The last is long-term effects. The
example is economic. Economic here means
economic hardship, due to: temporary decline in
tourism, rebuilding costs, food shortage leading
to price increase ,etc.
From the explanation above, we know
that flood causes many bad effects to our life
especially our environment. So, we must care
about cleanness of our environment.

27. What kind of bad effect caused by flood that is directly felt by the blood victims while the flood
coming?
A. Water supplies
B. Economic hardship
C. Hunger for the lack of food
D. Waterborne diseases caused by the dirty environment.
E. Death of people and livestock due to drowning.

28. Lack of clean drinking water after the flood is ____ caused by flood.
A. the primary effect
B. the secondary effect
C. the long-term effect
D. the short-term effect
E. the unpredictable effect
29. “Crops and food supplies mean shortage of food crops ….” (paragraph 3)
The antonym of the underlined word is ….
A. excess
B. adequate
C. lack of
D. deficiency
E. necessity

30. Which one is not the bad effect caused by flood?

A. The economic recovery.
B. The damage of properties.
C. The physical damage.

Text 2 for questions number 25 – 28

To improve comfort and cleanliness at our school, we should add some dust bins.
When we look at classrooms, school corridors, and school yard, there are papers, mineral
water cups, straws, and napkins here and there. The condition of uncleanliness and discomfort
really hinders learning and teaching environment. Litters thrown carelessly cause disease,
especially empty plastic cups or glasses. They can be filled out with water coming from the rain.
This can be place for dengue mosquitoes to breed and spread out the dengue fever. In addition,
these rubbishes can deteriorate the scene. Well painted wall and green school yard will be
nothing if litters are scattered everywhere.
Anyway I notice that most of the students in our school have responsibilities for the school
environment. Some students put litters in the dust bins. But some do not, they just throw away
garbage. The numbers of dust bins in our schools are not enough. Therefore, more dust bins

Health food is a general term applied to all kinds of foods that are considered more healthful
than the types of foods widely sold in supermarkets. For example, whole grains, dried beans, and
corn oil are health foods. A narrower classification of health food is natural food. This term is
used to distinguish between types of the same food. Fresh fruit is a natural food, but canned
fruit, with sugars and other additives, is not. The most precise term of all and the narrowest
classification within health foods is organic food, used to describe food that has been grown on a
particular kind of farm. Fruits and vegetables that are grown in gardens treated only with organic
fertilizers are organic foods. They are neither sprayed with poisonous insecticides nor refined
after harvest.
In choosing the type of food you eat, you have basically two choices: inorganic processed
foods, or organic unprocessed foods. A wise decision should include consideration of allegations
that processed foods containing chemicals are proven to be toxic. It also states that the vitamin
content is greatly reduced in processed foods.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to complain about ads on TV.
There are so many ads, especially during my
favorite programs. I think they should be
stopped for a number of reasons.
First, ads are nuisance. They go on for a long
time and there are so many. Sometime the
duration for ads is longer than the program
itself.
Second, ads give a bad influence on people.
They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy
food like beers, soft drinks, candies, etc. In
other words, they make people want things they
do not really need and cannot afford.
Finally, it seems that ads play an important
role in the programs people watch. There are
lots of ads in the programs, watched by a lot of
people. Meanwhile, some programs which are
not so popular are stopped because they do not
attract enough ads, even though those
programs may be people's Favorite.
For those reasons, I think TV stations should
stop showing ads. They interrupt programs, and
have bad influence on people and they
sometimes put a stop at people's favorite
shows. I am sick of ads and now I watch movie
in the cinema.

Text 2 – for questions number 76 - 80

Once upon a time there lived as neighbors, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit was a
good shot and the bear, being very clumsy, could not use the arrow to good advantage.
