Building bigger muscles can also help you get leaner. First, by increasing caloric expenditure. The muscles are like the engine of a car:
the bigger the engine, the more fuel it uses.
Gaining one pound of muscle will increase caloric expenditure by around 15kcals/day, and up to 25-30kcals/day if you are very active.
This isn’t huge but gaining 10lbs of muscle could increase your daily energy expenditure by 150-300kcals. It won’t make you lose a huge
amount of fat in of itself, but it can certainly contribute to making losing fat easier.
Muscle size also has a role in increasing insulin sensitivity, and the more insulin sensitive you are, the easier it is to get leaner.
The reasons why having larger muscles makes you more insulin sensitive are:
You have more storage room for carbs in your muscles. If you have a lot of storage room, carbs can more easily be stored in the muscle;
you don’t have to release a lot of insulin to force nutrients in.
Bigger muscles have more insulin receptors. This makes the muscles more responsive to insulin. As such you need less insulin to get
the job done, but it also means that you will more easily store nutrients inside the muscles rather than as body fat.
