Infotainment Programs: Pro and Contra

Do you like gossip? Do you like news which reveals the life of famous celebrities? If you do,
then you must enjoy watching infotainment programs on TV today. Many people condemn the
content of the infotainment programs. However, the TV rating show that an infotainment program
with different names from almost TV channel in Indonesia is one of the ‘most watched’ TV
programs.
People who are fond of infotainment programs believe that the content of infotainment program
are based on the fact and can encourage celebrities to do good and positive things in public. They
also believe that journalists of these programs always try to find the truth behind the gossip.
Moreover, celebrities need such programs to promote their profile and career. These programs give
a room for mutual needs: reporters and celebrities. Reporters need the story, while celebrities need
fame for life.
Nevertheless, there are also Some people who strongly object to the good point of infotainment
programs. They say that infotainment programs are merely about slandering another person.
Sometimes, the program goes too far into the private lives of people. Celebrities think this is very
annoying. For example, gossips about a divorce or about someone cheating on his/her spouse
often become the headlines. The worst thing is, sometimes, the stories are reported without firstly
seeking the information or confirmation from the celebrities involved in the stories.
So far infotainment programs have become a dilemma for some viewers. On one hand, these
programs can run stories on how celebrities build their career and how they feel about being
famous, but on the other hand, these programs also bring terrible sequences, especially for
celebrities whose private lives are scrutinized. Sometimes they feel they do not have a normal life
by losing their ‘free life’.

There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or not.
Some people claim that children do enough in school already. They also argue that children
have hobbies that they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A further point they make is
that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn’t help the child learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers
argue that is important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support from
the teacher. They say that the evening is good time for children to sit down and think about what
they have learned in school.
Furthermore they claim that school day is too short to get anything done that needs doing and
makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or further writing tasks that don’t need
teacher’s support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only given at the
weekend when children have more time.

Higher Education for Women

In this modern era, there are still some parents who are reluctant about sending their
daughters to college. The narrow attitude shown to women’s education is largely due to the
traditional role of women in society. A woman is expected to be a wife and a mother. Most parents
believe that if their daughter gets married and chooses to be a housewife, then the higher education
will be a waste. However, an educated woman is not only a better wife but also contributes
something to the society.
Nowadays, more and more women are successfully combining heir career and marriage.
Educated women are richer both emotionally and financially. They are able to find an outlet for their
monotonous drudgery of their housekeeping. They bring more satisfaction and contentment of their
lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is class discrimination. Times have changes; modern
society needs the talents of its people regardless of gender. Today, women work alongside men. In
fact, in the last few decades, women have made outstanding contributions to society.
Women should be given the freedom to be educated whether or not they get married of go
to work after finishing their education, because it is only through education that a women will find
herself useful and discover what she wants in life. A woman who works is not an insult to her
husband. Conversely, her husband should feel proud of her achievements since marriage is actually
an equal partnership.
Therefore, parents should not think that girls should receive less education just because
they will get married one day.

Many people say that examinations should be abolished because they are not the best
measure of students’ capabilities. These people believe that students can study on their own and do
better without the nagging worry and pressure exerted by exminations.
Yet, there are persuasive reasons to show that examination should not be abolished. It is
insufficient that teachers assign homework and correct it. Because this is not done under
supervision, they can not be sure that it is really the work of the students themselves. Moreover ,
homework is not of student’s ability; homework is more a method of merely keeping him occupied.
Nowadays, in the hunt for jobs, students need to produce some evidence of their capabilities.
Prospective employers like to see copies of examination results; this is the only way a student’s

Beggars have become a big problem for us today. They come as street musicians, street
boys, "sick" people, "lost" people, or just beggars. As their number is getting bigger, the municipal
government feels the need to set a regulation to ban beggars. Many people support this.
They say that begging makes people lazy and bad survivors. They are like parasites.
Criminals take advantage of their existence. Car drivers are strong-armed in crossroads, motorbikes
are seized, trucks are hijacked, etc. A man in a rural area takes them to the city with his truck in the
morning and pick them up in the afternoon. They have made an agreement to share what they get.
Some children are reported to have been kidnapped not for ransom. They are forced to be beggars.
Some. people, however, say that we must help beggars. They become beggars because
they have no choice. What they get every day is only enough for buying food. Being a beggar is
better than being a thief or a robber. So it is a high time to apply their religious teaching to care for

than people who have never smoked. There are also several causes of heart disease and smoking
is one of them. And there are many diseases which can develop from smoking and heart disease is
one of them. Cigarette smoking is actually a major cause of heart attack, stroke and peripheral
vascular disease.
Smoking and heart disease may not come hand in hand because not everyone with heart
disease used to smoke, but we can’t ignore the fact that smokers may develop heart disease in a
later time or any other serious disease for that matter.
Smoking kills more and more people each year and almost 40% of those who died from
smoking die from heart and blood vessel disease. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals

There is an issue of discussion about whether animals should be kept.

Some people claim that it is cruel because wild animals need their freedom and like lots
of space. They also argue that the British climate is not suitable for many wild animals and they
are never completely healthy. A further point they make is that people only come to zoos to be
entertained and that they might just as well watch nature films.
However, there are also good arguments against this point of view. Zoo owners argue
that they now make great efforts to make sure animals are kept in a space similar to their own
environment. They say that animals can cope with different climates as long as their diet is right.
Furthermore they claim that they serve an important purpose by breeding rare animals that are
dying out in the wild.
