“In line with the vision to close the industry gap, UTP has made it compulsory for its
undergraduate students to undergo practical work which is known as Student Industrial Internship
Program (SIIP) and makes it compulsory for all UTP students to undergo it within their three year of
studies. There are two elements consisted in SIIP, which is Student Industrial Training (SIT) for
fourteen weeks and Student Industrial Project (SIP) for the following fourteen weeks. All eligible
students will have to undergo both elements of SIIP at a host company which is related to their
program of study. The internship program will contribute seven credit hours to the total of credits
taken during undergraduate studies.”

UTP has always placed great emphasis in having a close collaboration with the industries in which its
graduates will eventually gain recognition from industry players locally and abroad. This internship
programme is a prime example of the University-Industry collaboration. Currently, UTP offers five

1.2.5 Types of Services

“Since its establishment in 1998, Power Quality Engineering (PQE) has done
many services towards electrical systems monitoring in various area especially at
factories industries. Sime Darby, PETRONAS Gas Berhad, Hovid, SAPURA Energy
and many big companies had been covered by PQE and offered the contract in
providing consultant for monitoring electrical system. Some company had sign the
agreement with PQE to do their services annually. Basically, the services that offered
by PQE can detect the faulty that occurred in electrical instruments using their own
equipment like ultrasonic, lux meter, power logger and others. Early error detection
can prevent the equipment fail to operated; that would be a high impact due to
operational costing. PQE had done many services and here are some main services that
can be provided.”

1.2.5.1 Power Quality Monitoring

“Before proceedings to the next services, Power Quality Monitoring (PQM)

should be done at the first place. PQE has owned their latest version of PQM
equipment, power logger which can collect data from power system behaviour with
various of parameters. The data that we take from the logger will be analyzed by the
engineers and then the report will be delivered to the customers that include the
recommendations for power quality errors that need to be done by the clients. PQE
also will provide the manners how to surpass the error occurred. There is no wonder
this services are the most frequent services that requested by the customer.
Furthermore, we can also provide the free services for PQM with terms and conditions
apply.”

1.2.5.4 Partial Discharge (PD)

“Partial discharge (PD) is a restricted dielectric breakdown of a little segment

of a strong or fluid electrical protection framework under high and medium voltage
stretch. Partial discharges inside a protection framework could conceivably show
obvious discharges. In high and medium voltage devices, for example, control
transformer, this development of charge and its discharge can be symptomatic of issues
connected with maturing, for example, skimming segments and protection breakdown.
PD discovery is utilized in power system to screen the condition of soundness of high
and medium voltage types of gear, (for example, control transformer, control link,
switch gear) if such issues are not identified and repaired, the quality and recurrence
of PDs increments and in the long run prompts to the calamitous disappointment,
which can bring about outside hardware harm, fires and loss of income because of an
unschedule blackout.”

“PQE provided the installation of the PD at the respective company if

requested and will be monitoring the PD on-site, non-instructive online PD test. The
qualified engineer will conduct the services as they have high utilization on PD
detection technology and equipment.”

2.2 Work Environment

Figure 2.2(a): Characteristics of Positive Work Environment

Aside from the job scope itself, one factor that significantly influences how
employees feel about work is the environment which is everything that forms part of
employee’s with the work itself, such as the relationship with co-workers and
supervisors, organizational culture, room for personal development, etc.

A positive work environment makes employees feel good about coming to

work, and this provides the motivation to sustain them throughout the day.

32
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239
SIT REPORT

2.2.1 Teamwork

“Teamwork is a process of working with a group of people in order to

achieve a goal. This method or approach is usually a vital element of an organization
as it is necessary for colleagues to work together trying their best in any condition.

This also means that the people will have to try cooperating, acquiring their own
skills and providing constructive feedback despite the personal conflicts between
them.”

In an organization, the value of teamwork shown among employees are

really good. Even if they are from other sections but they still assist each other on
certain things that they are familiar with.

2.2.2 Work Ethics

Punctuality Discipline Productivity

Dedication

Figure 2.2.2(a): Seven Characteristics of Good Work Ethics

33
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239
SIT REPORT

Punctuality

Employees who have a positive work ethic comprehend the significance

of their employments, and they consider them important. This implies that they try
to be on time, consistently. They may even be early most of the time.

Discipline

Discipline is also a sign of a good work ethic. Discipline means being

able to stay focused on tasks and being able to put the effort in to get the job done.
Some of your employees may go out of their way to waste time or to avoid work.
However, those with good work ethics do not.

Productivity

Because employees with a positive work ethic work so hard, they often
have a high level of productivity. This means that you can rely on them time and
time again to churn out results. This is very helpful for your company.

Dedication

Employees who have a good work ethic are often highly dedicated. In fact,
they may have a plan to work their way up the corporate ladder. So, their dedication
may stretch beyond just their daily tasks. They may want to excel at their current
position, and then move to the next step.

Reliability

Reliability is another feature of employees with good work ethic. If there

are one or a couple employees whom you know you can turn to whenever you really
need to get something done, those are the ones that will tend to have positive work
ethic. It is important to have these types of employees at your company.

34
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239
SIT REPORT

Professionalism

“To employees with a good work ethic, work is taken very seriously. They
dress appropriately, act appropriately, and avoid any shenanigans or inappropriate
behaviour that other employees may participate in at the office. Employees with good
work ethics are there to work, they are not there to play. They want to get the job
done and do their part for the company in a very professional way.”

Respectfulness

“Respectfulness is another character trait that is also often present among

those with great work ethics. This is because those great work ethics tend to be
mindful of the office environment, and the importance of team unity. The success of
any company depends on how well its team can function. Employees with good
work ethics know this, and they make sure that they treat their team members well.”

3.0 WORK EXPERIENCE

3.1 Skills Gained

As stated in the objective of the internship program, it enhances

students’ skills to survive and adapt in real working life. Throughout the 13 weeks
of training, I have learned a lot about my host company which is Power Quality
Engineering Sdn. Bhd. The tasks that were assigned to me create a great
opportunity for me to improve my communication skills, social skills and time
management initiative and gain knowledge in new fields.

3.1.1 Communication Skills

“Communication skills are one of the vital key to ace in working life
especially with clients, colleagues and upper level management. Without good
communication skills, it can lead to misunderstanding due to misinterpreting the
delivered data. Working together as a team, good communication skills are essential
in the process of transferring or exchanging the information among the group
Member or between individuals. The communication can be considered successful
when both sender and receiver understand and interpret the same information one
another.”

Throughout the internship period, students are expected to learn on effective

and professional communication with their surroundings. In fact, my supervisor and
other colleagues have taught and encourage me to communicate well with others. I
should know what I want to say and why do I have to mention about it. I need to
clearly know the purpose and intention of the message to be delivered and also with
the receiver who is going to receive the message.

During my training period, I have learned to communicate through emails and

phone calls besides communicating verbally with others. These are examples of
36
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239
SIT REPORT

efficient communication medium within the company. I assist few engineers to

complete their task whenever necessary, including meeting with clients and
contractors, attending meetings and site visits and many more. It requires me to
engage with many people and therefore, I will indirectly learn and absorb the way of
communication that occurs around me through those mediums.

In conclusion, the skill is very important and need to be developed in order

to succeed in social life as well as personal working life. The ability to communicate
well and deliver the information correctly, is something that should not be
overlooked. This skill will be useful for students to apply during their final year or
for their future working life.

3.1.2 Initiative

Another important key to succeed at work is by showing efforts that can

secure the career and encourage oneself to the top of profession. Showing initiative is
closely related to personal achievement and professional development in
demonstrating their value at work on daily basis.

Throughout my training period, I encountered many circumstances that were

also experienced by other students. Apart from university lifestyle, career lifestyle
requires me to be more intense in searching knowledge. Since I am working under
project department which somehow is slightly different from what I have been taught
in UTP, I need to have my own initiative to clearly understand about the equipment
and maintenance works.

37
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239
SIT REPORT

3.1.3 Time Management

Being a professional, having a good time management is very crucial

to improve the working life quality. We should know how to prioritize the
tasks accordingly as all the work tasks and projects given are still ongoing. The
supervisor put all the task in a proper order upon handling the task to their
interns for more effective completion. The working hours are utilized for work
activities either inside or outside the office.

During the training, I have learned to manage my time wisely to

complete the tasks given by organizing the level of criticalness and
importance. If I am not able to deliver the task assigned on time, I will stay
back at the office to complete it. Multitasking skills are also important as this
will able to tackle task with higher priority which requires more attention and
to avoid any type of pressure in working environment.

Apart from the task given by the host company, UTP also requires the
students to update their daily logbook. The logbook then will be remarked by
the supervisor of the host company. Despite the workstation tasks, I still need
to obey UTP rules and regulations to pass this course with flying colours. In
order to avoid any pending job that can affect my performance as a trainee and
a student, I need to be smart and efficient enough to manage my time wisely.

38
CHE KU MUHAMMAD 22239

2.3 Knowledge

“Knowledge is critical in doing any sort of works even the works that you are
doing is only a little and simple work. With knowledge, the work that we will do will
be less demanding and with knowledge we can diminish botch. Botch often happens
when we are absence of knowledge. Even though we tend to commit errors when we
have knowledge, however the progressions and the missteps itself is lower contrasted
with the odds of committing errors when we do not have any knowledge in regards to
the matters.”

“In my internship period, since the undertaking and work that I have done is
with respect to technical department, it requires knowledge about the department itself.
As I have not been more knowledge on the items that would be use for services for
Power Quality Engineering, despite everything I figured out how to take after and
finish the undertaking viewing items as I am still in process in learning and there are a
lot of research that I have done until I can understand completely the products.
Although I cannot understand all their product, I will do more research so that I can
learn and know somethings that maybe can help me in the future of my studies and
life.”

4.1.1.1 Environmental

“A peaceful and comfortable work environment is what people are dreaming

in working life. People do not stress doing the work beside they are having and
enjoyable moments at the office. Owners of the company will always make sure their
workers get the best condition in doing the work.”

“As staff in Power Quality Engineering spend their time outside the office,
they do not have much time together. It could be good if we can make an activity
outside the working life and working hours to spend time together to make our
bonding among us become stronger. It does not mean the staff in PQE do not have
the bond, but we want to do activities that not related to the work. It could be nice if
we can hang out together playing bowling, walking around the shopping mall,
jogging or any other interested activities.”
