SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATH 9

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Define accurately direct variation using the given example,
b. Solve correctly problems involving direct variation through a group activity,
c. Relate wholeheartedly the concept of direct variation to one’s life through
recitation.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

a. Topic: Direct Variation

b. References: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9
c. Materials: TV, pen, activity sheets, shoe laces

III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preparatory Activity
1. Routines
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Checking of Attendance
2. Review
3. Motivation
 I have here shoe laces. Observe the relationship of the number of laces
to its overall length. (the teacher ties the laces)
 What happened?
 What if I will untie these shoe laces?
 Now, who can conclude on the relationship of the number of shoe laces
to its overall length?
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
 The above activity is the first kind of variation or what we called the
direct variation.
 The number of shoe lace and its overall length is one of the examples of
direct variation
2. Discussion
 Direct Variation is a kind of variation which one variables is equal to the
constant times the other.
 In direct variation, as one variable increases or decreases, the other
does the same.
 The formula for direct variation is y = kx where k is constant. For
example, y =12 when x = 4, find y when x = 12.
 First, we will substitute the value of y and x to get the value of k. (12=4k)
 To get the value of k, we will divide both sides by 4. (k=3)
 Then, substitute the value of k together with the given value of x to get
the value of y in the formula. y= 3(12) = 36
3. Analysis
 If you don’t have any questions or clarifications, we will have our activity
called “one minute challenge: finding the value of Y edition”.
 The class will be grouped in to four.
(the teacher will state the mechanics of the game)
Answer a fast as you can!
1. If y=3 when x=10, find x when y=1.2.
2. If y=-18 when x=9, find y when x=7.
3. If y=10 when x=24, find y when x=16.

4.Application

Now, who can relate the concept of direct variation in your own lives?

We can relate this concept of direct variation to our studies. The more time you
spend in studying your lessons, fortunately, the higher score you will get in our
quizzes and examinations.

IV. EVALUATION

1. Tin cans of beverages are collected for recycling purposes in many places
in the Philippines.
Junk shops pay Php 15.00 for every kilo of tin cans bought from
collectors. In the following table, c is the cost in peso and n is the
number of kilos of tin cans:
n 1 2 3 4

c 15 30 45 60

a. What is the constant of variation?

b. Observe the values of c and n in the table. What happens to the cost
c when the number n of kilos of tin can is doubled? Tripled?
c. How much would 20 kilos of tin cans cost if at the end of month, the
cost for every kilo of tin cans will increase by 5 pesos?
d. What items can be made out of these tin cans?

V. ASSIGNMENT

The amount of money raised at the charity fundraiser is directly proportional to the
number of attendees. The amount of money raised for five attendees was Php 100. How
much money will be raised for 60 attendees?
