Expressing Intention
Social function:

WILL
“Will” adalah suatu kata yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan yang akan dilakukan di masa
mendatang yang tidak direncanakan sebelumnya.
Example:
Sukma :Sam, how are you?
Sammy: I am fine Ma, how about you?
Sukma : I am fine too. Where will you go?
Sammy: I will go fishing. This is my hobby that I do every week.
Sukma : It sounds good.
Sammy : And you? Where will you go?
Sukma : I will go camping near the Muara Buana river.
Sammy : Let’s go together because I fish at that river too.
Sukma : Ok, let’s go.
BE GOING TO
“Be going to”menyatakan kegiatan yang akan dilakukan dimasa mendatang yang sebelumnya sudah
direncanakan, tidak peduli apakah rencana itu realistis atau tidak.
Example:
Ceri : Have you made any vacation plans?
Berry: Well, I've decided on the thing - I am going to go camping.
Ceri : That's great! For how long?
Berry: I am going to be away for a week. I only have five days of vacation.
Ceri : So, when are you leaving?
Berry: I'm not sure. I will probably leave around the end of May.
Ceri : And where are you going to go?
Berry: I haven't thought about that yet. I guess I will go to one of the national park's.
Ceri : That sounds like fun.
Berry: Yeah. Maybe I will go hiking and do some fishing.
Ceri : Are you going to rent a camper?
Berry: I'm not sure. Actually, I probably will rent a camper - It's so expensive.
Ceri : Are you going to go with anyone?
Berry: No. I need some time alone. I'm going to travel by myself.
This holiday I'm going to have camping with my friends. I would rather choose to spend my time with
my friends than my family because the last holiday I can't spend my time with them. So, I will have
camping at the camp area a little far from my house. I will make sure this holiday I really have fun with
them! I would like to prepare all the things that I need. And also I will bring my new stuffs for my make
up from my parents who just came back from France. I think I will make them envy, hahaha. but,
that's not my reason now. I would like to bring all the things that we should play at the camp. I'm going
to bring so many ingridients to make new food at there too, because i know that my friend and also
me, we like to create or make new recipes.
• The above dialogue illustrated about the holiday plan or an intention on going
for a vacation.
There are basically two ways in expressing intentions, or purpose. Firstly, when
the decision is already made before a conversation takes place. Secondly when
the decision is made spontaneously during a conversation.
• For spontaneous expressions, the pattern is:
S + will + V1 + O
• Look at the example from dialog above:
- I think I will spend my holiday at home with my parents
- Perhaps, I will go to Kuta Beach
- I don’t think I will surf
• But when we have a plan or intention to do something in the future, we usually
use other forms of future tense. We use “ be going to”.
