1st April 2016 "STAAD PRO"- Wind loading

Hello,

We have done so far in Staad pro. following during the recent posts

1. Introduction to Staad [http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-

pro-introduction.html]
2. Introduction to Modelling
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-modelling.html]
3. How to import cad file in Staad
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-import-cad-file.html]
4. Tools to generate model
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-tools-to-generate-
model.html]
5. How to model Plates modelling
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-plate-modelling.html]
6. Shortcut keys of Staad
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-shortcut-keys.html]
7. Shortcut keys of Autocad
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/autocad-shortcut-keys.html]
8. How to assign properties in Staad
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-assigning-
properties.html]
9. Loading
• Dead and live loads
[http://structuralsols.blogspot.in/2016/03/staad-pro-loading.html]
• Earthquake/seismic loading (1)
loadings.html]
• Earthquake/seismic loading (2)
loadingjoint-weight.html]

************************************************************
Now we are going to work with Wind loadings

Like in Seismic loading we have to do it in two steps

1. Defining wind load definitions
2. Defining load cases
WIND LOAD DEFINITIONS

STEP-1:-
Go to--definitions--wind definitions--add

http://structuralsols.blogspot.com/2016/04/staad-pro-wind-loading.html 24.10.2017

Fig 1

New dialog box is opened as shown in above fig1

input the same data as shown and click add

STEP-2:-
Click on the option available in below wind definition(TYPE1:WIND1)
new dialog box will open

Fig 2
We are now going to input the intensity details i.e, Wind intensities
with respect to height
..............................................................................................................
...................................
Note:-
1.You are supposed to calculate these values by the wind codes of
your respective countries like for India it is IS:875(Part 3)
2. If you are not able to calculate these loads you can go for the
"Calculate as per ASCE-7"Just input the details and its done.
..............................................................................................................

Fig 3

On clicking add New box is opened asking for the Exposure Factor. It
depends upon location of the structure with respect to nearby
buildings. You can calculate these factor manually and input the
value and click add.
If no exposure factor is to be provided just close the box.

DONE, Wind definition part has been completed now moving on the
load cases.

DEFINING WIND LOAD CASES

In case of wind 4 case needs to be define

• WL+X(wind in positive X-direction)
• WL-X(wind in negative X-direction)
• WL+Z(wind in positive Z-direction)
• WL-Z(wind in negative Z-direction)
..............................................................................................................
.....................................................
Note:- Windward face- the face which is facing the wind directly and
Leeward face- face which is just opposite the to windward face
..............................................................................................................
.....................................................

STEP 4:-
go to--Load case details--add--wind load--WL+X(title) see Fig4

Fig 4

Do this for all the remaining cases

STEP 5:-
In Load case: WL+X
We Need to define 4 sub load cases
• Windward face in X direction with factor 1 (Fig 5)
• Leeward face in X direction with factor 1
• Leeward face in Z direction with factor 1
• Leeward face in Z direction with factor -1 (Fig 6)
Similarly For all the the Remaining 3 load case can be done

you need not to give the range data Staad will pic up the surfaces
automatically

DONE, we have done with Wind loading
