ABSTRACT

This laboratory activity involves acid and bases were conducted to determine if
camote tops extract can be used as an alternative acid-base indicator. Students
formulated necessary laboratory protocols and their own procedures to determine
problem regarding acids and bases using camote tops extract, ammonia water, and
calamansi juice. Student came up with their own hypotheses that they also tested.
Camote tops extract was then expected to change its color when exposed to an acid or
base as its chemical reaction. This study has, however, been able to prove the ability of
the camote tops extract to retain its effectiveness as an acid-base indicator.

INTRODUCTION

This laboratory report presents an over-all activity of the students inside the
laboratory while conducting an experiment. In this experiment, the student’s scientific
method skills were tested by means of determining the ability of a camote tops extract
as an acid-base indicator. Students were tasked to formulate their hypotheses and to
design their own experiment given a particular set-up. The students formulated
hypotheses to be proven by their later experiment and form a conclusion in the end.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

A. Hypothesis
1. Camote tops extract is a natural acid-base indicator,
2. Ammonia water is a basic solution, and
3. Calamansi is an acidic solution.
B. Materials and Equipments

camote tops extract ammonia water

3 test tubes(small) 2(250ml) beakers

2 calamansi fruits bunsen burner

graduated cylinder 2 iron stands and rings

C. Procedure
1. Place a beaker that contains camote tops extract on it in the iron stand with a
flame source (alcohol burner).
2. Once heated, place the extract on a three separate test tubes.
3. On one first test tube, drop 1mL of ammonia water.
4. On the other test tube, drop 1mL of calamansi juice.
5. On the last test tube, drop both calamansi juice and ammonia water.

RESULTS
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

The camote tops extract, when mixed with an ammonia water, it turned into color
yellow indicating a basic solution while on the other hand, when being mixed into
calamansi juice, the camote taops extract turned red indicating an acidic solution. When
the camote tops extract was being mixed with ammonia water and calamansi juice, it
turned yellow at the bottom and green on top. Both hypotheses; a) Camote tops extract
is a natural acid-base indicator, b) Ammonia water is a basic solution, and c) Calamansi
is an acidic solution, were proven right.

CONCLUSION

This laboratory report has discussed the role of camote tops extract as an acid-
base indicator and to prove the student’s hypotheses which are camote tops extract is a
natural acid-base indicator, ammonia water is a basic solution, and calamansi is an
acidic solution. In the experiment conducted by the students, camote tops extract was
proven to be an acid-base indicator because it turned red when mixed with calamansi
while yellow when mixed with ammonia water, and yellow at the bottom and green on
top when mixed with both calamansi juice and ammonia water. This laboratory activity
was intended for the students to improve their knowledge regarding to this topic and
enhance their scientific method skills.
