ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS OF

TECHNICAL, VOCATIONAL AND LIVELIHOOD SENIOR

Alvarez Technical High School, General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite. In partial fulfilment of
the requirements for Practical Research I, Prepared under the supervision of Cherry Rose
Sorrosa-Uminga.

INTRODUCTION

K-12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (6 six years of

Primary education, 4 years of Junior high school and 2 years of Senior high school (The

K-12 Education-Philippines, 2016). K-12 program aims to develop student’s skills and

talents, to make them more globally competitive. Senior high school covers the last stage

of k-12 program which comprises Grade 11 and Grade 12 (Department of Education,

2017). Before entering senior high school, students must undergo some assessment to

determine their preferred track. It includes career assessment examination and career

advocacy activities which aims to help the student in choosing the right career that’s fits

to them. Senior high school students may choose from the 4 track, namely Academic
track, Sports track, Arts and Design track and TVL (Technical Livelihood Education)

track. Each track has a specific strand to offer, for example, Academic track are

subdivided in to four they are the HUMMS (Humanities and Social Sciences), STEM

(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), ABM (Accountancy, Business and

Management) and GAS (General Academic Strand). Academic track focuses on

developing student’s soft skill, those skill that does not need strength or human power.

Some example of it are skills in communication, problem solving skills and critical

thinking. Arts and Design track focuses on visual and performing arts, while Sports track

focuses on developing an athlete, coach and officials of a game.

TVL is a track which offers the students of giving them sufficient skills and

talents that they will be needing in their work spaces. For those students who wanted to

work already after graduation they might choose TVL in their SHS career. Because TVL

immediately prepares the students for their future job. TVL has the most number of

strand to offer, it has Agry-Fishery Arts, Home Economics, ICT (Information and

Communications Technology) and Industrial Arts. Being one of the three Technical High

School in Cavite, General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School offered TVL track.

They offered Automotive Servicing (NC II), Bread and Pastry Production (NC II),

Cookery (NC II), Food and Beverage Services (NC II), Broadband Installation- Fixed

Wireless System (NC II), Mechatronics Servicing (NC II), Carpentry (NC II), Electrical

Power Distribution Line Construction (NC II), Fashion Design (NC III), Hairdressing

(NC II), Beauty/ Nail Care (NC II) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (NC II) (Department

of Education, 2017). The advantage of taking TVL strand is that, upon finishing Grade 11

and Grade 12 students will be able to receive a National Certificate depending on their
specialization. During their immersion, they can already get a work experience even

though they were still studying. Lastly after their graduation company where they do their

immersion may already hire them as one of their worker.

Some of the subjects to be taken by TVL students are also the same in another

strand, the only different was their specialize subject. Specialize subject of TVL strands

depends on their specialization, for example if your strand was hairdressing then your

specialize subject must be all about hairdressing. TVL students must also take Applied

and Core subjects that all senior high school students must take. Some Applied subjects

are Practical Research and Empowerment and Technology. Some Core subjects are 21st

Century Literature, Oral Communication, Pagbasa at Pagsulat sa Piling Larangan, Earth

Science, Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Region and General Mathematics.

General Mathematics includes Functions, Business Math and Logic.

Since TVL Focuses more on developing skills and talents of the students to make

them more prepare on their future job. Researchers decided to conduct a study that aims

to determine the Academic Performance in General Mathematics of TVL students from

General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School.


Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the difference between the academic performance of

different TVL strands from General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School. It aims to

answer the following questions:

1. Which strand has the highest academic performance?

2. Which strand has the lowest academic performance?

Significance of the Study

The study aims to benefit the following:

 Students by conducting this study

 Teacher they might use the result of the study in making an alternative plan in

maintaining the quality of education in the school specifically in the subject

General Mathematics.

 School they may use this study to know more

 Future Researchers they may use the data of study as one of their references while

they been doing their own research.


Objective of the Study

Generally, the study aims to determine the difference between the academic

performance of different TVL strands from General Mariano Alvarez Technical High

School.

Specifically, the study aims to;

1. Identify which strand has the highest academic performance in General

Mathematics;

2. Compare the academic performance of different TVL strands; and

3. State the difference in academic performance of different TVL strands.

Time and Place of the Study

Basically, the researchers conducted their study at General Mariano Alvarez

Technical High School, General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite. The study was facilitated from

September to November 2017.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

Researchers wants to know the difference in academic performance in general

mathematics of all the TVL strands in GMATHS. The data will be gathered by getting

the grade of the students from their mathematics teacher. It will not focus on explaining

the reason why does some of TVL strands has a higher average among the other strands.
