Basketball

In December 1891, James Naismith invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. It

was first played with a soccer ball and a peach basket being hung in a 10-foot tall elevated rack.
Contrary to modern basketball, peach basket retained its bottom. That proved inefficient and so it
was removed.

The soccer ball was made by the “association football”. It’s with a set of laces to close off
the holes needed for inserting inflatable bladder after the sewn-together segments of the ball’s
cover has been flipped outside-in. This caused the passing and dribbling unpredictable. After
some time, a lace free ball was made for the specific game.

The first balls were made brown which proved to be not so visible. Only in the 1950’s
that Tony Hinkle made a basketball that is more visible which is being used in modern basketball.
In 1906, peach baskets were replaced with metal hoops and backboards. This changed the game
as rebound was first known with backboards.

Mahan, a student of Naismith, asked what he would call the game. Mahan said that it
should be called “Naismith ball”. Naismith laughed for the ridiculous name Mahan thought for
the game. Mahan then said “What about basketball?”. This is where Naismith agreed to call it
basketball.

Now, basketball is a great sport known internationally. NBA is the most well-known
organization to be streamed worldwide. International competitions such as FIBA and Olympics
have been a part of basketballs success. It is hard to believe that a great sport first started as a
game to pass by time during the rain of 1891.

Volleyball

William G. Morgan invented the game volleyball 4 years after basketball’s creation.
Originally called “Mintonette”, volleyball was designed by Morgan with a combination of
basketball, tennis, baseball, and handball. He was a graduate of Springfield College in
Massachusetts. He was a physical education director in YMCA.

In winter 1895, it was the first time volleyball was created. Its name (Mintonette) was
derived from the game badminton. Its purpose was of a way of pastime to be played indoors and
by any number of players. It was on July 7, 1896 that it was first played. Springfield College was
also the home of volleyball.

In 1900, a special ball was designated for the sport volleyball. In 1916, in the Philippines
that spiking was first introduced as a way of offense. It was in 1917 that the points were
increased from 15 to 21. In 1920, three hits per side and back row attack rules were first
instituted.

1930 was the first two man beach game was implemented. 1947 was the year Federation
Internationale De Volley-ball (FIDV) was founded. In 1949, the Initial World Championship was
held in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1983 the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was
formed.

Volleyball has a lot of history to offer. It came from a dream game to a reality. It was
compounded with different ideas originated from other sports made volleyball unique. It proved
to be worthy of being a national sport to be played by everyone.
