2. Explain COP. Prove that COP of heat pump is always greater than COP of refrigerator by
unity.
3. What are primary and secondary refrigerants? How are different refrigerants classified?
4. A reversed Carnot cycle is used for cooling in summer maintained at 5ºC when the
ambient temperature is 40ºC. The same cycle is used for heating in winter at 55ºC when
ambient temperature is 15ºC. Assuming 5ºC temperature difference in heat exchanger that
exchanges heat with the surrounding , find
(a) The COP of cooling and heating cycle.
(b) If the water at 30ºC is used as a cooling medium with 3ºC temperature difference for
summer air conditioning, what will be the Carnot COP.?
(c) The power consumption per ton of refrigeration in each case.
5. An air refrigerator working on the principle of Bell-Coleman cycle. The air into the
compressor is at 1 atm at -10ºC. It is compressed to 10 atm and cooled to 40ºC at the
same pressure. It is then expanded to 1 atm and discharged to take cooling load. The air
circulation is 1 kg/s. The isentropic efficiency of the compressor and expander is 80% and
90 % respectively. Find the following:
i) Refrigeration capacity of the system
ii) C.O.P of the system, Take γ = 1.4, Cp = 1.00 kJ/kg ºC
iii)
6. An air cooling system for a jet plane cockpit operates on the simple cycle. The cockpit is
to be maintained at 25ºC. The ambient air pressure and temperature are 0.35 bar and -
15ºC respectively. The pressure ratio of the jet compressor is 3. The plane speed is 1000
kilometer per hour. The pressure drop through the cooler coil is 0.1 bar. The pressure of
the air leaving the cooling turbine is 1.06 bar and that in the cockpit is 1.01325 bar. The
cockpit cooling load is 58.05 KW. Calculate: (a) Stagnation temperature and pressure of
the air entering the compressor. (b) Mass flow rate of the air circulated, (c) Volume
handled by the compressor and expander, (d) Net power delivered by the engine to the
refrigeration unit and (e) COP of the system.
7. A boot strap cooling system of 20 tons capacity is used for an air plane. The temperature
and pressure of atmosphere are 20ºC and 0.8 bar. The pressure of air is increased from 0.8
bar to 0.96 bar by ramming action. The pressure of air leaving the main and auxiliary
compressor are 3.5 bar and 5.25 bar respectively. 60% of total heat of the air leaving the
main compressor is removed in the first heat exchanger and 35% of total heat of the air
leaving the auxiliary compressor is removed in second heat exchanger. Assuming
ramming is isontropic and ηt = 80%, ηc1 = ηc2 = 85%. Cabin pressure is maintained
at1.03 bar and temperature of the air leaving the cabin should not exceed 27ºC. Find the
following:
a.) kW required to take the load in cabin and (b) COP of the system.
