Marketing and Strategic Communications Academy

(MSCA)
HAMPTON ROADS, VA. Civil Air Patrol’s Virginia Wing held its first Marketing and Strategic
Communications Academy (MSCA) on Langley Air Force Base in Hampton Roads, VA, on April
5-7, 2019. A total of nine cadets, one cadre member, and four senior members came together
from multiple squadrons across the Commonwealth to attend the academy.
Fashioned after Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters’ restructured public affairs’ directorate,
MSCA encompassed 10-hours of instruction in leadership development, photography, editing,
peer review, marketing, technical writing, and branding. Outside of the classroom, the students
were able to gain experience in the field by photographing the Noncommissioned Officer
Academy (NCOA) and Drill and Ceremony School (DCS), which operated in parallel on Langley
at the same time.
In the eyes of the attendants, this inaugural effort to bring about skilled personnel proved to be a
fantastic success. The cadets could not wait to share what they have learned back at their
squadrons and hope to return as cadre in 2019 Fall evolution. Lt. Col. Kimberly Frady, academy
director, summed up the intent of this weekend event with her signature quote, “Public affairs is
not photography, we are storytellers.”
News release written by MSCA students and compiled by C/2d Lt Munger of Newport News
Composite Squadron.
