The key takeaways are the concepts of polynomials including definitions of terms, coefficients, exponents, degrees, as well as the different kinds of polynomials.

A term is a constant, a variable or a product of a constant and variable. The constant/number is the numerical coefficient and the variable including its exponent is the literal coefficient.

The different kinds of polynomials according to the number of terms are: monomial (one term), binomial (two terms), trinomial (three terms), and polynomial (four or more terms).

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS (POLYNOMIALS)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts of polynomials.
2. Recognize and give examples of a polynomial.
3. Identify the base, coefficient, term, and exponent of a given polynomial

II. Subject matter

Topic: Polynomials

III. Procedure
A. Motivation
The class will be divided into 4 groups and will be given an envelope
containing letters. They will then create words out of those letters. The
groups will be given five minutes to complete the task. The group who will
have the highest number of correct words formed will win.
B. Presentation
1. The teacher will have brief review on algebraic expression.
2. The teacher will then proceeds with the lesson proper.
Definition of terms
Term is a constant, a variable or a product of constant and variable.
Ex. 3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 5, the 3𝑥 2 , - 𝑥, and 5 are called terms
In the term 3𝑥 2 , 3 is called the numerical coefficient and 𝑥 2 is
called the literal coefficient where 𝑥 is called the base and 2 is called
the exponent.
Numerical coefficient is the constant/number.
Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent.
The term –x has a numerical coefficient which is -1 and a literal
coefficient which is x. The term 5 is called the constant, which is
usually referred to as the term without a variable.
Degree is the highest exponent or the highest sum of exponents of the
variables in a term.
Similar Terms are terms having the same literal coefficients.
Ex. 3𝑥 2 and -5𝑥 2
Polynomial is a kind of algebraic expression where each term is a
constant, a variable or a product of a constant and variable in which
the variable has a whole number (non-negative number) exponent. A
polynomial can be a monomial, binomial, trinomial or a multinomial.
An algebraic expression is NOT a polynomial if
1) the exponent of the variable is NOT a whole number {0, 1, 2, 3..}.
2) the variable is inside the radical sign.
3) the variable is in the denominator.

Kinds of Polynomial according to the number of terms

1) Monomial – is a polynomial with only one term
2) Binomial – is polynomial with two terms
3) Trinomial – is a polynomial with three terms
4) Polynomial – is a polynomial with four or more terms

Kinds of Polynomial according to its degree

1) Constant – a polynomial of degree zero
2) Linear – a polynomial of degree one
3) Quadratic – a polynomial of degree two
4) Cubic – a polynomial of degree three
5) Quartic – a polynomial of degree four
6) Quintic – a polynomial of degree five
* The next degrees have no universal name yet so they are just
called “polynomial of degree ____.”

A polynomial is in Standard Form if its terms are arranged from the

term with the highest degree, up to the term with the lowest degree
where the first term is called the Leading Term, the numerical
coefficient of the leading term is called the Leading Coefficient and
the exponent or the sum of the exponents of the variable in the
leading term is the Degree of the polynomial.

C. Activity

C.1. Tell whether the given expression is a polynomial or not. If it is a

polynomial, determine its degree and tell its kind according to the number
of terms. If it is NOT, explain why.
1) √𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
2) 3𝑥 2 – 5xy + 𝑥 3 + 5
3) 8
4) 𝑥1/2 - 3x + 4
3
5) 𝑥 + 𝑥 2 -1
C.2. Arrange the following to its standard form and determine its leading
term, leading coefficient, degree, kinds according to the number of terms
and its degree
1) 𝑥 4 – 5𝑥 3 + 2x – 𝑥 2 – 1
2) 100𝑥 3
3) 5𝑥 5 + 3𝑥 3 – x

IV. Evaluation

Answer the following.

1) The terms can be called similar terms if they have the same
____________?
2) It is the highest exponent or highest sum of exponents of the variables in a
term?
3) It is a kind of algebraic expression where each term is a constant, a
variable or a product of a constant and variable in which the variable has a
whole number (non-negative number) exponent?
4) It is the variable including its exponent?
5) Enumerate the three instances where an algebraic expression is not
considered as polynomial.

V. Assignment

3) -8𝑥 2 -10𝑥 2
4) 5x-3x-8x+6x
5) 5xy-xy
