Andal Jayanthi celebration

Day - 1

Soodi kodutha sudarkodi Andal Jayanthi

Andal Jayanti is celebrated in a very befitting manner on the poora nakshatra day in the
tamil month of aadi. This day is celebrated as the birth day of bhooma devi. This day is
also known as aadi pooram festival day

In the year Kali 98 in the aadi month on this poora nakshatra day Vishnu Siththar
(known as Periyazhwar), while tending the ground in his garden found a beautiful girl
child under a thulasi plant. He was so happy and named this girl child as Kothai and
took her home. He then was bringing up this child with great care and affection

Vishnu Siththar was teaching Kothai daily about Vishnu dharma and also the special
and great qualities of Maha Vishnu. As days passed by, Kothai not only developed great
devotion on the God but also great love towards HIM. Every morning Vishnu Siththar
used to prepare a nice flower garland to be offered to the God. When he was not in the
house, Kothai would wear it around her neck and see herself as an enhanced beauty,
absolutely suitable to offer herself to the God. After sometime, she will remove the
garland from her neck and keep it in the original place. This used to be the happening
every day

One day Vishnu Siththar happened to watch this. He was very disturbed and felt sad. He
chided her as to why she was doing this. Therefore he did not offer to the God such a
garland worn by his daughter. That night, when he was sleeping God appeared in his
dream and asked why he didn’t offer the garland to him on that day. Vishnu Siththar
narrated what had happened and apologised to the God. But God smilingly told him that
the garland worn by Kothai was the most suitable for HIM and he liked her action very
much. He ordered Vishnu Siththar that every day HE be offered the garland first worn
by Kothai.

From that day onwards Kothai was considered b everybody as an incarnation of

Bhooma devi. Kothai was increasingly seen with utmost devotion, singing the praise of
the God. After doing long penance and Vrat, Kothai wrote out in Tamil and sang rare
poetic gems like Thiruppavai and Nachiar Thirumozhi. All the people started
worshipping her more and more and these songs became popular recitations by
everyone.

When Kothai became ready for marriage she was firm that she would marry only the
supreme God residing in Srirangam temple. Azhwar was wondering about it and
became anxious how this could become possible.

One day in his dream God himself appeared and told him to travel to Srirangam temple
premises and take along Kothai. Then the God said that HE would marry Kothai at that
place.
As this was happening in Vishnu Siththar’s place in Srivilliputhur, the priests at
Srirangam heard God’s anonymous voice from the sky. It ordered them that “Soon
Kothai will have to come to Srirangam. Therefore all of you should start best
preparations for this event” As ordered by the God himself, a big group of priests and
dignitaries reached Srivilliputhur. In a nicely decorated palanquin they brought Kothai
to Srirangam Temple precincts, along with her father Periazhwar.

In the presence of the Pandiyan King Vallabha Devan and that of all devotees and
followers, Andal Kothai stepped slowly towards the God and stood by HIS side. Just
then, when everybody was watching, she took the flame form and merged with the God.
All the people around and all others were dumb struck. From then on, they started
praising the glory of Andal and worshipping her.

Andal Jayanthi, is usually celebrated as a 10 day program. The last day of the program
is known as Aadi Pooram. That day is also celebrated as the wedding day of the
marriage of Sri Ranganatha Swamy and Andal.
