Difference Between Genes, DNA and Chromosome
Genes are composed of DNA sequences while chromosomes are entire DNA strands that are
packed tightly together so they can fit into a cell. So, the entire chromosome is lined with genes.
In other words, one chromosome contains several genes
DNA
a DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a long molecule that contains our unique genetic code.
Like a recipe book it holds the instructions for making all the proteins in our bodies.
DNA contains four basic building blocks or ‘bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G)
and thymine (T)
Genes
Genes are small sections of DNA within the genome that code for proteins. They contain the
instructions for our individual characteristics
The purpose of genes is to store information. Each gene contains the information required to
build specific proteins needed in an organism.
Chromosome
Chromosomes are bundles of tightly coiled DNA located within the nucleus of almost every
cell in our body. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes.
A single length of DNA is wrapped many times around lots of proteins? called histones, to
form structures called nucleosomes.
These nucleosomes then coil up tightly to create chromatin loops.
The chromatin loops are then wrapped around each other to make a full chromosome
Mitosis
Mitosis is the process in which a eukaryotic cell nucleus splits in two, followed by division of
the parent cell into two daughter cells. The word "mitosis" means "threads," and it refers to
the threadlike appearance of chromosomes as the cell prepares to divide.
As mitosis progresses, the microtubules attach to the chromosomes, which have already
duplicated their DNA and aligned across the center of the cell. The spindle tubules then
shorten and move toward the poles of the cell. As they move, they pull the one copy of
each chromosome with them to opposite poles of the cell. This process ensures that each
daughter cell will contain one exact copy of the parent cell DNA.
Meiosis
Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half
the original amount of genetic information. These cells are our sex cells
These four daughter cells only have half the number of chromosomes? of the parent cell,
they are haploid.
Meiosis produces our sex cells or gametes (eggs in females and sperm in males)
