SOIL MECHANICS

Shear Strength of Soil

Mohr-Coulomb Failure Criterion
 Mohr (1900) and Coulomb (1776)
 Material failure is due to a critical combination of normal and
shear stresses
 Curved failure envelope
 For soil mechanics problems linear approximation is sufficient

 (Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion)

 In a saturated soil mass

 For a effective stress case the Mohr-coulomb failure

criterion becomes

Curvilinear Failure Envelope

19
Direct Shear Test
 Advantages
 Simple and easy
 Rapid drainage due to smaller sample thickness
 Also, used to determine interface friction angles

 Disadvantages
 Failure plane is predetermined
 Area of sliding surface changes as the test progresses
 Non-uniform distribution of shear stress along the failure
surface

Triaxial Shear Test
 Most reliable testing method
 Sample dimensions
 1.4 in dia. and 3 in high
 2.8 in dia and 5.6 in high
 Length/Diameter = 2

 Confining pressure (σ3)

 Deviator stress (σd)
 Stress controlled
 Strained controlled

Triaxial Shear Test
 Two stages during test
 Consolidation stage
 Shearing stage

 Three standard types of triaxial tests

 Consolidated-Drained test or Drained test (CD test)

UU Triaxial Test
UU Triaxial Test
This test usually is conducted on clay specimens and depends on a very important
strength concept for cohesive soils if the soil is fully saturated.

The added axial stress at failure is practically the same regardless of the chamber
confining pressure.

Note that the φ= 0 concept is applicable to saturated silts and clays
