Introduction to SCUT
South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's leading universities.
It operates under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education; It is also a
member of „Project 985‟ and „Project 211‟ which qualifies it as a top institution in
teaching and research. In 2012, SCUT entered the top 500 with chemistry ranked in
top 200, and engineering even ranked in top 150. The international status of SCUT
has improved strikingly and the university is competitive enough to play a role in
international society.
SCUT is located in Guangzhou, near Hong Kong and Macau. It has two campuses:
the north campus in Tianhe District is in an attractive area, with rolling hills, lakes,
lush greenery and brilliant flowers. The campus architecture is a mixture of both
traditional and modern design. The south campus is located in University Town in
Panyu, which has an open and spacious environment, featuring extensive landscaping
and innovative architecture.
Since its establishment in 1952, SCUT has developed into a major, comprehensive
university that offers multiple disciplines including science, engineering, business,
management, liberal arts, law, bio-medical science and art design. SCUT is currently
composed of 25 schools offering 78 Bachelor‟s degree programs, 193 Master‟s degree
programs, and 107 Ph.D. programs. Since its founding, the university has produced
over 260,000 graduates in many areas. A large number of them have become
technological mainstays, distinguished entrepreneurs or leading cadres. SCUT has
appropriately been called "a cradle of engineers" and "a cradle of entrepreneurs".
SCUT strives to be an exceptional example for the rest of the international university
community. It is active in academic exchange, promoting collaboration with more
than 100 overseas universities. In 2013, there were 2028 international students from
123 countries studying at SCUT; about 60% are enrolled in a degree program, while
the rest are learning Chinese. Most of the students in the Chines language program
