How many here get a good 7-9 hours sleep daily?

UAE statistics says every seconddd person does not have a good night’s sleep. But here in Victoria Toastmaster
almost all cannot sleep well.

Let me take you through the need for good sleep and how one can work towards sleeping well.

The Dalai Lama has said ‘Sleep is the best meditation.’ Good sleep is very important. In Greek mythology, Hypnos,
the sleep god, is the son of Nyx the goddess of the Night, AND, is closely related to Thanatos (god of death) and
Morpheus (god of dreams).

Lack of sleep affects our

 Immune system
 Learning & Memory capability
 Hinders the body’s function to repair and rejuvenate itself
 Results in hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cancer& depression

Well – how can we sleep – we are in DUBAI - The City That Never Sleeps – where

 Long working hours


 Late nights – “shisha culture”
 Coffee lovers …..
 Climate – long summer days ….

It is estimated that here approx. 26 % of the absenteeism is due sleep deprivation and and 18 % accidents due to
sleepy driving.

So what can one do?

1. Have a treat – for your eyes only, not stomach :- Have light evening meals : - Hence the adage - Eat like a pauper
at night
2. Avoid Nicotine Alcohol & Caffeine : - Nicotine users have 14 mins less sleep per night than non-nicotine users.
Alcohol helps sleep – only if you can stop drinking & bring diuretic one is disturbed at night to go to the toilet.
The body takes a long time to break down Caffeine.
3. Balance Fluid Intake : - less water before sleeping. Drink gallons during the day
4. Go to Sleep When You’re Truly Tired : - Don’t take small naps ….
5. Develop a sleep routine : - Make sure you have timings to sleep. Put off activities that
6. Establish a Soothing Pre-Sleep Routine : - Cue for the body
7. Don’t Be a Night time Clock-Watcher or gizmo watcher : - Put off wifi. Don’t put off your wife – then you will
hardly sleep and God save you
8. Get recommended 8 hours straight sleep

10. Sleep on a proper mattress : - We spend so much money on a bed but little on mattresses – like full course meal
but diet Coke. Buy reputed brands like Simmons / Intercoil. I assure you that you will have good sleep & I too
will sleep well – as I work here.

Dr. William Dement sums up saying: "You're not healthy, unless your sleep is healthy."
