Paper 2: Writing
Name: ________________________________________
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Do not open this question paper until you are told to do so.
Read the instructions for each part of the paper carefully.
Answer the Part 1 question and one question from Part 2.
Write clearly in pen, not pencil. You may make alterations, but make sure your work
is easy to read.
Part 1
Good news
You’ve just had a great bit of news – you’ve received an offer of work for your
dream job, got engaged to be married, won the holiday of a lifetime. It stands
to reason you immediately want to post a Tweet or update your Facebook
status – let everyone know about your good fortune so they can share in it
with you. This comes from a genuine desire to celebrate with your nearest and
dearest. But maybe you should think twice: yes, your friends may be pleased
by your news – but they might consider you just a little bit boastful, too.
Self-promotion
What’s wrong with a bit of self-promotion? To my mind you won’t get very far in this world if
you don’t get out there and let people know about your achievements or dreams. Are you
hoping to land a top job at the best law firm in town? Do you want to find the perfect partner
to settle down with? To have any hope of standing out from the crowd, creating an online
presence is key – whether it’s building a website that showcases your talents, uploading your
profile to job networking sites, or telling the world about your experiences and successes.
Part 2
Write an answer to one of the questions 2 – 4 in this part. Write your answer in 280 – 320
words in an appropriate style on a separate sheet of paper.
3 The tourist office for your town has invited local residents to send in reports about
cultural events which have taken place in the town. You decide to send in a report briefly
describing one such event and evaluating how successful it was in attracting tourists to
the town. Your report should also consider why it is important to continue to attract
tourists to your town.
