Keynote Proficient End-of-course Test B Paper 2: Writing

Part 1

Read the two texts below.

Write an essay summarizing and evaluating the key points from both texts. Use your own
words throughout as far as possible, and include your own ideas in your answer.
Write your answer in 240 – 280 words on a separate sheet of paper.

Good news

You’ve just had a great bit of news – you’ve received an offer of work for your
dream job, got engaged to be married, won the holiday of a lifetime. It stands
to reason you immediately want to post a Tweet or update your Facebook
status – let everyone know about your good fortune so they can share in it
with you. This comes from a genuine desire to celebrate with your nearest and
dearest. But maybe you should think twice: yes, your friends may be pleased
by your news – but they might consider you just a little bit boastful, too.

Self-promotion

What’s wrong with a bit of self-promotion? To my mind you won’t get very far in this world if
you don’t get out there and let people know about your achievements or dreams. Are you
hoping to land a top job at the best law firm in town? Do you want to find the perfect partner
to settle down with? To have any hope of standing out from the crowd, creating an online
presence is key – whether it’s building a website that showcases your talents, uploading your
profile to job networking sites, or telling the world about your experiences and successes.

Write your essay.
