Lesson Plan in Advanced Algebra (Math 4A)

Prepared by: Brandon P. Emnace

I. Objectives

At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:

a. Students will practice operations of polynomials.

b. Students will be able to gain a deeper understanding on how to operate polynomials.

c. Students will have a determination and patience in solving the operations.

II. Content

Operations on Polynomials

III. Learning Resources

Advanced Algebra (2nd Edition): pp 34-37

IV. Procedures
A. Introduction

The teacher presents a song which is all about the Operations of Integers: Add,

Subtract, Multiply & Divide. After they sing together, that’s the time where the teacher explains

the logic behind of that song. Afterwards, the teacher asks some questions if they are familiar

with polynomials. He gives the meaning and explains very clearly to the class and he attached

some examples on the board and answers it in front of his class. The teacher gives another

example and he let his students answer voluntarily and explain it to his classmate.

Adding and Subtracting Integers Multiplying and Dividing Integers

(If you’re happy and you know it) (Are you sleeping Brother John?)

If both signs are positive and them up² Multiplying and dividing
If both signs are positive, Use the same sign.²
Then the sum is positive. You will get a POSITIVE,
If both signs are positive You will get a POSITIVE,
Add them up Now you know! ²

If both signs are negative and them up² Multiplying and dividing
If both signs are negative, Use the different sign.²
Then the sum is negative You will get a POSITIVE,
If both signs are negative You will get a POSITIVE,
Add them up Now you know! ²

If the signs are different you must subtract²

You look at the greater value
The sum will be that sign
If the signs are different
You must subtract
B. Delivery

Just as you can perform the four operations on polynomials with one variable,

you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials with more than one variable. The

process is exactly the same, but you have more variables to keep track of. When you are

adding and subtracting polynomials with more than one variable, you have to pay particular care

to combining like terms only. When you multiply and divide, you also need to pay particular

attention to the multiple variables and terms. You can multiply and divide terms that aren’t like,

but to add and subtract terms they must be like terms.

C. Exercises

Answer the following operations on polynomials.

1.) (2x - 3x2 + 12) + (4x2-5x -5) 5.) ((((10x5y3z5)2)3)0)2

= x2 - 3x + 7 =1

2.) (10x3-3x2 -x +5) - (8x3+7x2- x + 1) 6.) (15a3b5c6d8)2

= 2x3- 10x2 + 4 = 225a^6b^10c^12d^16

3.) 7x(3x3+ x - 4) 7.) (-x2+9x-2)-(-4x+9x2+7)

= 21x4+ 7x2 – 28 = -10x2+13x-9

4.) (3x3y5)4 14x3y/28x0 y4

=81x^12y^20 = 1/2 x3y3
