It was early 6 am when I woke up last June 29 to attend the Tuason Racing School media clinic.
I was kind of sick when I awoke. I was in fact a bit hesitant about driving the 3-hour long
journey to the Batangas Racing Circuit but I thought to myself that the opportunity to drive full
race cars in a closed circuit does not happen everyday. With that thought in mind, I gathered up
all my strength, went to pick up our marketing manager Mike Pagli, and we both went on our
way. The event was supposed to start 10am, but we arrived just a tad bit late. However we
soon found that we were in fact a bit early as none of the other participants had arrived yet.
We got to take a quick look at the Civic EG hatchback race cars while the Tuason Racing people
were making some final checkups. For that day we had a total of 3 cars at our disposal. The
powerplants ranged from 1500s and even to a 1600cc b16a-engined monster of a hatchback.
That was the car that we both wanted desperately to drive. But alas, JP explained that for safety
reasons, all of the cars have built in rev limiters that would kick in at only 4,500rpm. That
means we wouldn't even get to see the VTEC zone, but still, that was fine enough for us.
While waiting for the other media personalities, JP Tuason and his crew were busy preparing the
pylons for the track while we got rested in one of the air-conditioned suites. When everyone had
arrived JP began by introducing the team, giving a short background on what we were going to
do for that day, and giving a short lecture about proper safety procedures on and off the track.
After a couple of minutes we boarded the back of JP's F150 pickup to take a ride around the
track. The Batangas Racing Circuit is basically comprised of several different circuit
configurations. Different racing series use different portions and directions of the track. During
the morning session we would only be running on the karting (infield) section of the track.
Speeds in this section don't go too high since there are no long straightaways to take advantage
of. Riding in the back of the truck, JP showed us the proper braking areas, turning points, and
shifting points to the different corners of the track.
JP also set up a small area for the braking test. This is basically right after the final corner. While
exiting in second gear, there is a small section marked by pylons. Basically after crossing the
first set of pylons, we were asked to step on the brakes as hard as we could, without locking
them up of course, and by the second set of pylons we should have already come to a full up.
Sounds easy you might ask? Then consider that you're coming out of the corner at around 60 or
more kph and there's probably only around less than 50 meters of braking area. One by one we
found out that it wasn't that easy after all.
Each one of us had around 4 laps to work with. I quickly boarded the b16a powered car. I was
surprised to see JP Tuason himself sit down beside me. It seems he was going to be my teacher
for this round. During the first lap I basically took it easy, with master karter and F3 driver JP
Tuason giving me some pointers on how to take the different corners of the track. After that first
familiarization lap, it was all go all the way. Driving as hard as I could, I tried to push the car to
the absolute limits. But no matter how much I tried, I just couldn't pass that braking test. JP
was an ace teacher all the way as he gave encouragement and praise when I did something
good, and was also not hesitant to let me hear about any mistakes that I was making.

After each one had taken his turn at the wheel, we then proceeded back to the suites for our
lunch break. As we were having our meal, members of the tuason racing team treated us to a
wonderful display as they rode around the track, racing and dicing with each other. After the
sumptuous lunch, JP then proceeded to explain the more intricate details of circuit car racing.
One by one he explained such items as the racing line, the apex, and most especially, the 5-step
heel and toe downshifting technique. Time was of the essence so again we boarded the F150
and rode around the track once more. But this time, we were going to use the bigger track
already, including the long final straightaway.
As the afternoon wore on, the combination of the heat from the sun and the mechanical stress
of constantly pushing the engine was just too much for some of the cars to handle. Some were
leaking oil while others had overheating brakes. But thankfully most the problems were just
minor ones, the quick-working crew was able to remedy the situation. For my second session I
rode in the 1500-engined car with PJ Religioso by my side. I was looking forward to riding the
b16a powered car so that I could take advantage of it's extra power on the long straights but it
just wasn't meant to be. However I soon found out that the 1500 was in fact easier to drive than
the b16a one. Add to the fact that this particular had headers fitted in to compensate for the
lower displacement. This coupled with the Spoon muffler certainly gave it the sound of a true
blue racecar; it just added a lot to the experience.
At the end of the day, we went back to the suites and had our snack while JP gave us sort of a
debriefing about the whole event. It was also during this time that we launched the Tuason
Racing Project website, of course with the assistance and sponsorship of AutoIndustriya. We
were supposed to have a few more sessions but since we weren't the only ones using the track
at the time, we had to give way to the other racers. However, those who avail of the Tuason
Racing School can certainly expect a whole lot more seat time.
Kudos should go to the entire Tuason Racing Team for giving us and the general public an
opportunity to learn hands-on about circuit racing in a fun, controlled, and most importantly,
safe environment.

TRACK LAY-OUT
RACE SCHEDULE
FLYING LAP
The participants storm through the start/finish line. Reaching speeds in excess of 120kmh,
toward the end of the straight they get hard on the brakes downshifting from 4th to 3rd, and
then 3rd to 2nd they take the first turn. Reaching the apex they get hard on the gas powering
out of the first corner and on to a short straight. On the approach to the R-Bend the driver
brakes, going down from 3rd to 2nd and taking a late apex to exit. After a short run through the
straight leading to Yamaha corner, the drivers brake on the 50 mark and carry through on the
banked corner known as Yamaha and on to another short straight where they will pass a speed
chicane before entering Brian’s Corner. Brian’s corner taken on third gear test the courage of
the driver as the car will run wide close to the edge, any slight mistake will throw them onto the
outside tire barrier or allow the others to catch up. At the end of Brian’s they reach Marlboro’s
turn, which is a sharp right-hand turn, banked at the top. Marlboro again is taken in 2nd gear
with a late apex. On the power as they exit Marlboro, they make their way to the second speed
gate midway through the back-stretch. Coming out of the back-stretch they find themselves
coming through the final corner. Exiting this last corner at about 80 kph, the driver carries the
car out to the absolute edge of the long straight and powering through to finish the lap.

THE Tuason Racing School (TRS) in cooperation with Speedzone, held a series of Kid’s Karting
Clinics which began on April 13. Limited slots were offered by the school to ensure a thorough
training for would-be karters.
Fresh from his successful stint in the Karting World Finals in Egypt, Philippine International
Karting Association president and TRS head JP Tuason is pushing the sport because of the large
potential that Filipinos have. “The course tackled basic and advanced skills and culminated in a
race event. This four day course will prepare participants to graduate to “real racing” which can
be continued at the Carmona Circuit using faster karts,” says Tuason.
The full course tackled familiarization with the equipment, safety measures/equipment; rules on
the racetrack, orientation on left foot braking, hard braking, kart handling, racing line, kart
handling at faster speed, taking the turns, passing, wheel-to-wheel racing and race strategy.
The classes were offered at a subsidized price, thanks to the overwhelming support of of TRS’s
sponsors and Philippine International Karting Association.
Those made through the program were Roman Academia, Ton Joson, Rafael Benito, Joaoi
Pascual, Xavi Benitez, Tomas Cabili, Nicolas Roxas-Chua, Kahlil Demaisip, Juha Toralba and John
Alvarez. The kids, who started without any knowledge about racing, were handpicked from the
pool by TRS instructors. According to Tuason, “they represent the cream of the crop and we
believe that they have plenty of promise and will go places.”
TRS is still looking for kids with the “right stuff,” so those who were unable to attend the Karting
Camp this summer can still join the one-day race clinics which are scheduled on September 15
and October 16.

THE future of Philippine motor sports looks to have arrived in the persons of Roman Academia,
Javey Benitez and Ton Joson. The three took the podium following the 1st TRS PIKA Kids karting
race.
In handily winning his first official kart race, Academia showed surprising skill for a very young
karter on just his first Philippine International Karting Association-sanctioned competition.
Benitez and Joson, second and third, respectively, also exhibited the skills that could lead to a
successful career in motor sports or even a possible Formula One stint in the near future.
The TRS-PIKA Kids series, sponsored by Octane Racewear, Ambi Pur, Oakley, K&N Filters, H&R
Suspension Systems, Racegear, Options Unlimited, Brothers Burger and media partners C!
Magazine, Trapik.com and Motorista.com.ph., aims to discover and hone the skills of race
prodigies who can bring honor to the country in motor sports on the global stage.
The PIKA Kids series sponsors believe the best way to help the country produce world class open
wheel races is to start the kids on the proper rudiments and attitude for racing while they are still
young.
The series also seeks to provide a regular venue for healthy competition to enable kids to further
hone their skills in karting and build their confidence in order to prepare them for tougher
international competition.
The participants in the TRS-PIKA Kids series have all undergone karting instruction from
professional karting drivers and experts of the Tuason Racing School.
The next leg of the TRS-PIKA Kids competition will be on April 3 and 4.

The TDC is open to all licensed drivers who’ve never had professional racing experience. For an
entry fee of P150, race driver wannabes can get to win Gift Packs, a seat in TDC Leg 2
competition, and the opportunity of a racing scholarship from the Tuason Racing School worth
P150,000 to compete in the Ford Lynx Cup Novice class.
Qualifying will be held on April 21 to 24, 2004. Participants who turn in the top 20 fastest times
on a simulated racing video game on each day of qualifying will join the finals on April 25, 2004.
Finalists will compete head-to-head in a knock-out competition with the Top 20 drivers moving
up the Leg 2 of the TDC: The Karting Challenge.
The next stage is Track Day which will test the skills and aptitude of participants for entry into
the final stage: a two-day circuit car class which will determine who will be this year’s C! Top
Driver.

THE TRS Team Addict dominated the first leg of the 2004 Super Karting Series winning in all
categories up for grabs in exciting racing held last March 14 at the Carmona Circuit in Cavite.
Former Asian Karting Champion Mike Tuason led the TRS Team Addict charge by ruling the Rotax
Max Expert Class, handily beating Tim Gosnel and Manuel Sy who came in second and third,
respectively.
Newcomer Dave Tinio took the checkered flag in the Rotax Max Novice class for TRS Team
Addict. Maico Angeles came in second among the novices, just ahead of Dondie Lopez who joined
Tinio and Angeles on the podium as third placer.
Rafael Oracion made it a clean TRS Team Addict sweep by winning the KT Light class, finishing
ahead of second placer John Paul Dizon. Oliver Aquino raced for third in the category.
TRS Team Addict principal JP Tuason expressed his delight after the event and said, “I’m pleased
with the results of our team. Our drivers really prepared for the series and their hard work has
already paid off. I’m confident that they will continue to do well for the rest of the season.”
PROGRAM OVERVIEW The C! Top Driver Challenge is on its second year and continues to aim to
find the next racing superstar from a pool of relatively inexperienced aspiring race car drivers.
The winner of the program will be able to race for free in the Ford Lynx Cup 2004 Novice class.
The program consists of four legs where qualifiers in each of the legs continue advancing to the
succeeding legs until only one remains. The first leg is a racing arcade game competition (Video
Challenge) . The second leg is a karting Class (karting challenge) The third is a circuit car class
(Instructors Evaluation & Time Trial). . The fourth is a circuit car shootout among three finalists
from whom the Top Driver will be chosen (2 day Circuit Car training & Test). PROGRAM DETAILS
LEG 1: RACING ARCADE GAME The first leg of the program will be held in two venues: at the
Timezone in Glorietta 4(MARCH 20), and at Cebu (APRIL 3). This leg is open to everyone aged 17
and above with a driver’s license. The qualifying round proceeds to the final round of the video
gane challenge. The winnwre will proceed to TDC Round 2. Non-winners may continue to re-
register for another chance to win until all the available slots for the next leg is reached. Entry
fee for leg 1 is P150 LEG 2: KARTING CLASS The second leg of the program will also be held in
two venues: at the Speedzone (March 28), and at the Kart Zone in Cebu (APRIL 4). The

For the third leg, the participants will be taught the basics of circuit car racing. They will learn
how to handle a real race car on the track. Here, they will start to acquire the skills that they will
need if they are to become the Top Driver and eventually go racing. Only the top seven will get
to advance to the final leg. Entry fee for leg 3 is P4000 (If starting in leg or eliminated in
previous legs) LEG 4: CIRCUIT CAR CLASS The final leg will also be held at the Batangas Racing
Circuit (JUNE 12& 13). It will be a track day format where the participants get more track time
behind the wheel. They will be closely evaluated by the instructors to determine who the three
finalists will be. The three finalists will then do a timed lapping session where they will be
evaluated for speed, consistency, technique, and attitude. Based on the results of the evaluation,
the Top Driver shall be chosen. Entry fee for leg 4 is P11000 (If starting in leg 4 or eliminated in
previous legs) NOTE: SCHEDULE & RATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE
A Filipino contending with 70 of the Worlds Best in the Rotax Max World Finals, Egypt
Last January, I took a trip to the land of Pyramids, along with 70 representatives from different
parts of the world , for the Rotax World Finals in Egypt. From the Philippines, it took us almost
24 hours to reach Sharm El Sheik, a province of Egypt along the coast of the Red Sea, In fact the
most famous sight in that part of the country is Mt. Sinai, where Moses got the 10
commandments and St. Catherine’s Monastery where the supposed Burning Bush is housed. For
those who don’t know, it was the Red Sea that Moses parted to let the Hebrew cross to the
promised land. Now Sharm El Sheik is a Resort city, The four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Hyatt,
Sheraton and other Hotel Chains has claimed their own Bay and built a mini Town for their
dominantly European guests. This is also the area where Ghibili Raceway was built, the venue for
this years World Championship. Imagine a world class karting Facility in the middle of the desert,
so you would imagine that all run offs, where sand traps and there is no shortage of sand.
The Rotax Max Challenge is a competition Designed for the Bombardier-design Rotax 125 engine,
there are 32 distributors that hold this competition in respective countries and the National
Champion is invited to the world Finals. In this 5 day event, the drivers need to use their
championship-winning chassis, which is shipped by rotax for free. The engines, tires and other
accessories are provided by rotax, it is raffled off on the second day of the event to ensure
parity. The airfare, accommodation and transfer is all provided by the Organizers, making this
one of the most sought after competitions.
So why are we writing about this? We actually have a local Rotax Max Challenge here, and the
country is recognized to be represented in this competition. This year, the National Champion is
JP Tuason, Owner of the Tuason Racing School and 2 time karter of the year, he and over 35
(yrs. Old) representative; Swiss Marcel Thenu went as the Philippine contingent. Believe me,
seeing the Philippine Flag along with all the flags of the country displayed in the racetrack makes
you smile. Seeing our flag held by the Track girl was just overwhelming, we were really
recognized in this meet, not just a grid fillers or an expected back marker, but as real
contenders.
After all the participants received their engines, it was now time for the free practices. During the
first practice we already showed that we will be a contender for this race, JP timed 6th fastest
overall, this brought cheers to our side of the pits. On the next practice sessions our problems
started, first Jp had an accident, the cover for the gas tank came off during practice, gas started
to flow onto his crotch area, any karter knows how painful this is. Next, our infancy regarding
setup and equipment configuration started to show, We made changes after changes until we got
the correct set, tyre pressure and jet setting, with the help of some of our Asian neighbors, the
Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian and Thai team. During Scruteneering, we were told that our
body work was not allowed in the race ,that is the plastic parts that surround the kart, it’s a good
thing the Malaysian had an extra pair or our whole trip would have been that of spectators.
Because there are 70 competitors, it is essential to have qualifying races for the finals. Only 34
racers can join the main races making qualifying for the final an achievement on its own. The
process for qualifying is that each driver takes a timed run to determine your grid position for the
qualifying races. So they were off, equipped with my press pass, I was able to watch the race
from inside the track. Each group was given ten minutes to clock their fastest time, it was
ruthless out there and competitors were super aggressive that during this QTT they started
bumping each other. They just showed no mercy. The Karts literally went zoom beside you, their
pace was incredible. When the times came in the difference between each competitor was just
fraction of a second. Coming in on First was the Driver form Australia, Adrian Estacy followed by
Ricardo Van Derende of Netherlands, Brit Tristan Oman, South Africa’s Christiano Margado, David
Pailles of France, Jonathan Pieterse of South Africa and Esa Pekanen of Finland and guess whose
was next? JP timed 8th fastest overall while Marcel Clocked 10th Fastest putting JP 3rd or 4th on
the grid for the qualifying races.
The next day, was the Qualifying races, each competitor will race 3 heats, the top 25 will
automatically qualify for the races, while racers ranked 26 to 54 will get a race on the second
chance heat for the remaining 8 spots in the final race. This time, the roughness went up a
notch, on JP’s first heat a kart flew on him, not past him but on him, the karts’ tires went up to
his helmet giving him bruises on his shoulders and a sore rib, he went on to finish 9th overall.
Winning was Tristan Oman clocking a time of 1:00.9, Jp’s time on the other hand is 1:01.04, and
there is 7 people between then going on the same pace of about 75 kmh, so a little mistake and
you will have 3 -4 karts speeding past you. Marcel on the other hand finished 17th due to some
accidents, same with Jp’s second heat putting him 15 out of 33, again he was just 7 tenth’s of a
second off the time of the leader, Adrian Estacy registered 73.3 kmh while JP is on 72’s. So
imagine how tough the competition in these races. On his third heat, he finished 10th and was 5
tenth’s econd of Christiano Margado’s time (the heat winner).
So did the boys reach their goals? Yes, JP qualified 16th on the grid, while Marcel had to go on
the Second Chance heat, he was third on the grid, on the first lap but on the first corner he got
into an accident putting him behind, it was a shame for it would have been 2 out of 2 for the
Philippines. Only 2 other drivers, plus Jp qualified from Asia, even the 2 Faster Japanese Drivers
failed to be on the final 34. Because of this the Japanese technicians had enlisted themselves as
consultants to our team.
The Next Day proved to be harder than what we expected, karters are more aggressive and no
sticker on the karts remained intact, each race proved to be tougher than the last one, Qualifying
races winner Tristan Oman and Adrian Estacy were beaten by the 4th placer Christiano Margado
of South Africa, Making it 4 in a row for South Africa, he won the race on the last lap, the top 4
drivers continually changing positions making the race as exciting as could be. Our quest proved
to be successful, we qualified and competed in the world final, despite the problems we faced
and our relative inexperience in international races.
The most significant thing we have learned and showed in this endeavor is indeed we can be top
contenders in motor racing. We also proved that the Filipino can do it but we just need to go out
there and get more experience. Our country should support our quest for racing excellence,
quoting what Senator Barbers said in the recently concluded motorsports awards night, “ we are
putting so much money into basketball but we are not built for it. In motor racing there is no
height requirement, no physique requirement, and we have the ability and skill for it, we just
need more opportunities like this and support from our fellow countrymen then maybe ,just
maybe, we will find that our place is in the track behind the wheel”.
Circuit Car Class this weekend, February 21 and 22, from 9 am to 4 pm, at the Batangas Racing
Circuit in Rosario, Batangas.
THE Tuason Racing School (TRS) will hold a Circuit Car Class this weekend, February 21 and 22,

The classes, which are sponsored by Ford, Addict Mobile, Goodyear, Oakley, Petron, Ambi Pur
Car, Standard Insurance and C! Magazine, will be conducted in two parts. The Basic Class will be
held on Saturday, February 21, while the Advance Class is scheduled for Sunday, February 22.
For nominal fees of P5,000 and P7,500 for the basic and advance classes, respectively, students
will be taught the finer points of driving a racing car by TRS director and race driver JP Tuason.
They will also get a chance to drive race-prepared Ford Lynx touring cars.
For more information about their Circuit Car Class and other courses, please contact the Tuason
Racing School at (632) 5312962
Unbeknownst to many, last January 22 to 24 Filipino race driver JP Tuason took on what may
have been be the toughest assignment of his career the 2004 Rotax Max Karting World
Championship, which held in at the Ghibli circuit in Egypt’s popular tourist destination of Sharm
El-Sheik in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.
Tuason was be the only Filipino in a field of 80 karters from 40 countries—all natonal Rotax Max
champions of their respective countries—who were pitted against each other in qualifying heats
after which only the top 34 made it to the final. Tuason was ranked 8th fastest overall during the
Qualifying time trials and enjoyed a 3rd and 4th grid positions for the qualifying races. Tuason
was ranked at number 16 at the conclusion of the preliminaries.
During the final race, he held his position until a co-competitor spun out infront of him. He
rejoined the race after untangling himself from the ensuing pileup, but the field had already
made too much ground. Tuason, however, was able to climb back up into 25th place at the
checkered flag. The race and title was won by Christiano Morgado of South Africa.
Tuason, 27, earned the right to represent the country in Egypt by winning the 2003 Philippine
Rotax Max overall championship. He is also the holder of the under-35 title. Joining Tuason on
the trip were his mechanic Jose Ret and Marcel Thenu, a Swiss national residing in the
Philippines, who is the Philippine over-35 representative. Thenu failed to make it to the final.
Competing at the world level is nothing new to Tuason, who is sponsored by Addict Mobile,
Standard Insurance and Adidas. His previous sortie was in the 1994 Karting World Cup, which
was held in Suzuka, Japan.
“My goal was to make it to the final and I’m happy to have made it” said Tuason upon his return.
“Too bad, I was hit from behind as I felt that I could have finished among the top ten,” he added.
“In karting you don’t need to be big and strong. It’s a sport wherein Pinoys have a chance to
excel and it teaches you discipline and responsibility, which in turn develops character,” Tuason,
who is the director of the Tuason Racing School and newly elected president of the Philippine
International Karting Association (PIKA) said. “After racing against the best karters of the world,
I now feel compelled to introduce the sport of karting to as many young Filipino kids as I can and
I’m thankful that PIKA is holding clinics for kids. Who knows, one of them might turn out to be a
future world champion.”

RACING ADVENTURE
The Philippines’ warm and sunny climate is conducive to the enjoyment of various outdoor
pursuits of the extreme kind, the most interesting of which is motor racing.
Probably one of the best ways to experience the thrill of speed safely and without having to
spend a fortune is by attending the famous Tuason Racing School.
Founded in 1999 and managed by JP Tuason, two-time Philippine Karter-of-the-Year and winner
of the 2003 Asian Formula 3 Challenge in Zhuhai, China, the school offers courses for all levels of
karting and racing enthusiasts. It is also the first institution to introduce a systematized circuit
car racing course in the country.
No less than 300 students have taken the school’s various modules such as the Introduction to
Karting, Advanced Karting, Introduction to Racing and Advanced Racing. Many of the school’s
graduates have go on to participate in national and international competition.
The school teaches the art and science of speed all year round at the Carmona Circuit in
Carmona, Cavite and the Batangas Racing Circuit in Rosario, Batangas, which are just a short
drive away from Manila. The school runs its own fleet of well-maintained vehicles and lessons are
given by highly competent and experienced instructors who, themselves, are also accomplished
drivers in various disciplines such as karting, circuit racing and rallying.
The school keeps a low instructor to student ratio and all courses are taught with the right
balance of theory and on-track experience in order to enhance the students’ learning. Lapping
sessions, special classes as well as group and corporate days can be arranged on a case-to-case.
As part of its grassroots driver development program, the Tuason Racing School holds several
series such as the Search for the Next Racing Superstar, the TRS-Ford Lynx Cup and the Arthur
Tuason Memorial Karting Cup, which is named after JP’s late father, who was a motorsports
legend in the 70s and 80s. These series allow their participants to gain valuable experience and
seat time.

race 3 times against diffrent groups...
...then using a point system, you are ranked by the numer of points you have acquired from the
three races. The top 25 will automatically join the race, and number 26-58 will go on the second

come the second chance heat, on the first turn on the first lap, mishaps started to happen.
Unfortunately, our other co-patriot was included in this mishap. JP continues on 16th on the grid.

the weekend as the constant front runner Jeff Borja found himself being in the middle of the grid
and not quite being able to make his way back up during the race. On the other hand Pia Boren
was able to grab second place in race 9 and finished within one second of the winner Eggay
Quesada. Dominic Ochoa came in third place in a close battle with Jeff Borja who finished fourth.
The final race on Sunday afternoon another chance for Eggay Quesada to display his supremacy
as he took another win making it a back to back victory. During the first lap, there was already
non-stop action as the battle for second, third and fourth place already went on until the final lap
for Dominic, Pia, Dalia and Jeff who all finished accordingly.
Driving one of the Ford Lynx’s was JP Tuason, current F3 driver and two-time karter of the year,
with co-driver Dave Tinio, who is in his first year of karting. This was to be their first rally
experience. The other Ford Lynx was manned by Alex Morales, former karter and rally driver,
with his co-driver Eric Camarillo, also a former karter and rally co-driver. They would be going
back to the rally scene after a long two-year absence. The background of the team was
predominantly circuit racing at the Batangas Racing Circuit where they taught students and up
coming race car drivers how to put the Ford Lynx through its paces at the track. At the circuit,
the driver would be racing at a track where he knew all the turns and knew what to expect in
terms of the behavior of the cars. In the rally, they knew that this aspect of familiarity will no
longer be present. This would bring into the forefront their level of commitment with their cars,
with their driving skills, and the confidence driver and co-driver had in each other in order to
take the stages with full commitment without really knowing with full certainty what lay ahead of
the tight, twisty, and slippery bends.
Day 1: The Rally was formally started with the ceremonial flag off at the Petron station in
Greenhills. There the cars were scrutinized to make sure they conformed to all the technical
regulations, which were strictly enforced. The Ford Lynx’s passed the scrutineering, testament to
the attention to detail that the team had in their preparation. A couple of the cars, on the other
hand, initially failed due to having too noisy exhaust systems which prompted them to make
quick changes in order to be allowed to join. Subic was very particular with the noise levels that
would be allowed. After the inspections, there was a short program where each car was
introduced, then they were on their way to Subic.
Day 2: Next up is the survey where driver and co-driver go through the special stages with non-
race cars to prepare their pace notes. The pace notes, which identify the series of turns in each
special stage, serve as the only guide to the driver to enable him to go through the stage at the
fastest possible speed without incident. Preparing these notes proved to be quite a challenge,
and the previous rally experience of Alex and
Eric proved to be a big help.
Day 3: This was the day of the rally itself. Jp and Dave were the 11th to start followed by Alex
and Eric. For the first special stage, both drivers first had to settle in and took a cautious
approach. As the day progressed, both drivers steadily increased their pace as they became
more confident and got more familiar with the behavior of their cars in the unfamiliar
environment. The cars proved to be very driver-friendly and handled very
predictably—characteristics which are very important to rookie rally drivers. After the morning
session, or Leg 1, where the team was concentrating more in finishing the stages and bringing
the cars home, the story was quite different for Leg 2 in the afternoon. They were now aiming to
be within the pace of the other more experienced drivers. They started pushing harder and were
more committed in taking the turns enabling them to dramatically improve their times. Through
the entire rally, other cars were retiring one by one due to mechanical failure, but the Ford
Lynx’s developed no problem at all and held up very well. At the end of the day, the ford lynx of
JP and Dave finished 6th and that of Alex and Eric 8th overall out of fourteen starters. In
addition, Alex and Eric finished 2nd in the RP12 class.
What has the team learned from their rally experience? First, that it is different from circuit
racing. In circuit racing it is just the driver and his car on a familiar circuit. In rally, it really is a
team effort where communication and confidence between driver and co-driver is paramount.
The cars also take more of a beating with all the rough roads, which brings us to the second
lesson learned. The saying that to finish first, one has to first finish takes a whole new level of
importance. In rally, it is not just having a very fast car. It is important that it is also very sturdy
and reliable to stand up to all the punishment it is subjected to. This is where the Ford Lynx
passed with flying colors.

Adding color to the event was the entry of five mechanics sponsored by their respective teams,
drivers, and fellow crew members. Mario Suba, 2nd placer in the novice class was on of them,
proving that there is a lot of untapped racing talent in the country.
