Welcome to the American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association 2019 Externship Survey*. The Survey is
compiled from direct responses from 4th year podiatric medical students obtained after Match Day. This new
publication was developed to help guide you in the clerkship selection process. The program listings provide a
direct link to CASPR which includes further pertinent information.
The 2019 Externship Survey was conducted via an online survey. Approximately 625 4th years students
received a link to the survey in late March. A total of 230 responses were received by the end of May. The
survey results were compiled and this report was released in late July 2019.
The usefulness of this survey is directly proportional to the number of students who participate and the
number of programs they evaluate. We hope you will recognize the value and participate in this important
endeavor during your 4th year of podiatric medical school.
The APMSA is pleased to provide this new member benefit to you and trust that you will find this survey useful
in your clerkship selection process. We wish you continued success in your endeavors.
Sincerely,
Heather
Heather Keith
APMSA Executive Director

Additional comments: Don't let the "one resident per year" thing scare you! This is a great program and all the residents
act as one team and are friendly. They have plenty of cases for each resident and they are often able to choose which
cases they would like to do. There is no pressure to cover all the cases. As a student, you will have the chance to scrub in
as first-assist when they have a lot of cases going on. All the residents here are happy and Christiana had some of my
favorite attendings! Very nice hospital (that is HUGE, but also very organized). Downsides: not as much diversity of
pathology seen in clinic - mainly diabetic foot care.

most here scrubbed in. No clinic (MAYBE one day with Dr. Shane). They will also ask you to get fit for a mask which you
pay $50 and never use or see. You'll have one call week and that's fun because there's a lot of trauma. If you want surgery

for them to party and get drunk. Also very rude and disrespectful in the interview if you're not their top pick, it was a total

Additional comments: This was by far one of the best programs I attended as an extern. The program is only 8 years old
and on the rise. The hospital does not have any orthopedic residents therefore, podiatry is trusted with all the foot and
ankle trauma. Resident led academics are held twice a week and they help out in the clinics of various attendings. When
the residents are not in clinic they are in surgery but priority given to surgical cases.

surgically proficient and a resident run clinic we don't see. Residents can be stand-offish at times. And the ones on call are
always tired. They also taper their surgeries (aka first year is debridements, second is more elective and fractures, third

Additional comments: This program is often overlooked as "just another VA", but I would argue that this program is a
hidden gem. If you are someone who wants to be surgically aggressive, then this is a good program for you. The
attendings at Rubin Institute (Sinai Hospital) provide exposure to limb deformity correction, clubfoot, charcot, TAR, etc.
Dr. Siddique does a lot of percutaneous bunions. The VA provides a lot of exposure to wound care and clinic. Many of the
attendings at this program are young and fellowship trained and like doing a lot of surgery. If you want to be trained in a
surgically aggressive way, then I wouldn't pass up this program.

Other: Good balance of surgery, clinic, and inpatients
Additional comments: I would highly recommend this program!! They truly have a good balance of surgery, clinic, and
inpatients. You are able to have continuity of care with your patients (pre-op to surgery to post-op), which is hard to find
at a lot of programs. They let students do a lot in the OR so be prepared to inject, suture, etc. Clinic is busy, but mostly
shadowing for students because they want the residents to learn, as opposed to making the students see all the patients.
You will get to help with procedures in clinic, like nail avulsions. Always have bandage scissors and tape on you! The
attendings are all great teachers and they do a lot of cool cases, but are chill about it, so low stress. The hospital has nice
facilities. It's an underrated program in my opinion! You will be prepared for the "real world" upon graduating from this
program.

Other: A lot of crazy cases. They have an attending that works at an ortho group, but as students we were not really
exposed to his clinic or his surgeries too much.
Additional comments: I think this program is fairly balanced in terms of clinic and surgery. They go to the director's clinic,
which is a classic podiatry practice and they learn billing/coding. They also do clinic with Dr. Brant who works for an ortho
group, so they are exposed to a variety of clinic. Inpatient cases are a lot of gas and osteo. They work with a lot of
attendings, but I would say only a few are really good and respected by the residents. The hospital is very nice. The
surrounding area is a lot of farm land, so not too much to do.

Additional comments: This program can have long hours, but I failed to see how it necessarily translated to better

unnecessary consults. Most ED and floor consults were very minor issues that often were not even podiatric issues. There
was a lot of micromanaging from upper year residents. The best part of the program was probably the free food.

Additional comments: I have to be honest...I truly found this program to be overrated. I had heard so many good things
about it, so maybe my expectations were too high? Not sure, but I struggled to see what made this program so great or
honestly that different from other programs. The ratio of surgeries to residents is what makes people think they do a lot
of surgery, but the day they take 3 residents per year (which the director wants to do), it will be like any other program.
The hands-on involvement for students in the OR is very minimal and depending on who the attending is, the residents
may not be do much more than you. Don't be fooled by big-name attendings like Fleming at this program. The residents
hardly do anything in his cases. I understand why the residents don't want there to be more than 2 residents/year - they
want to be able to double/triple their numbers...makes sense because for half the cases they log, they hardly did anything
(ex - Polowczyk lets them retract and then close skin for his ankle ORIF's). They also don't really have a true private
practice clinic experience until their third year. There is a lot of floor work and the residents lack autonomy with their
inpatients. They must always round with the attendings when the attending wants (i.e. - some attending will stop by
randomly in the middle of the day to see his patients. You will run around the whole hospital for his 3 patients...none of
them will be in their rooms because it's the middle of the day and they are having procedures done, etc...this happens a
lot). Most ED consults or floor consults were unnecessary. Their EMR system is very outdated. They must dictate
everything. I liked their wound care center, but the residents dreaded it (probably because they have to dictate those
wound care notes). Their academics were very good and engaging. Final thought: Form your own opinions about
programs. Go see this program for yourself to see if it's right for you and don't be fooled into thinking that if you spend 16
hours at the hospital that you are at a better program than someone who spends 8 hours - look at how the residents
spend their time.

they began ranking students for match in front of several externs, they started promising positions to certain students
who didn’t end up matching there, and their interview was absolutely one of the harshest I’ve had of all the places I’ve
been to. It’s still a phenomenal surgical program but there are some very rival personalities putting people down in front
of students. I was even privy to one attending stating: “I don’t even know how he even works here or how he does
surgery” about another attending. It went from a program I considered strongly to one of my lowest choices to avoid
drama.

know...meanwhile I know more surgery and fixation. So I didn't get a chance to shine. Wound care is more here, and
some great attendings such as Cirlincione and Stabile will give you great skin to skin exposure but it just isn't enough.
Wound care clinic is hard work as we are scrubbing the feet, plus in the OR. Pay, benefits, and lifestyle is great here for a
routine podiatrist to train but if you want heavy surgery low clinic, this is not the place for you. Also they are
PRETENTIOUS but plenty of students realize 1 week in that they act much more sought-after than they are.

If no, explain how you found housing: Commuted from Queens, where I live. But if possible, AirBnB nearby or take train

Neighborhood/Area where you lived: Most residents commute from somewhere, some live in park slope.

List any areas of the city that should be avoided: No, it's a beautiful safe residential area of Brooklyn.
Car needed: No
Frequency of driving and range: Rarely ever left the main hospital. If you go to 1 day of clinic, the director/resident can
drive you or you can take a train/Uber.
Based on experience, type of ED cases on-call residents were paged for [A. Podiatric emergencies, fractures, and
serious diabetic wound care; B. Minor issues (ingrown nails, plantar fasciitis)]: Both
Surgical strengths of the program: Forefoot elective (hammertoes, bunions), Forefoot trauma (Lisfranc), Rearfoot trauma
(ankle, pilon), Wound debridement, Amputations
Other: Insane amount of surgical volume with podiatry attendings and incoming patients. Also lots of ortho because
there are no ortho residents. But you are not doing surgery 1st year for the most part, and 3rd year surgery is also
shunted to the 2nd years. I think a more gradual system may be more beneficial.
Level of role in surgery: Trusted to throw screws and suture
Other:
Additional comments: I would hesitate to recommend this program to someone who wants a more balanced experience
between workload and academics. I feel they need to improve their academics and monthly grand rounds. Up the pace.
Residents need better understanding of fixation. Surgery should be done more scattered through the 1st and 3rd year as
well. Living in the OR for 1 year (2nd year) isn't as good as starting with amps and dirty cases, moving up to a high volume
of elective and trauma in the 2nd and 3rd year. Inpatient management and volume is great for the right person, and
makes you learn a lot, but really I think the podiatry residents are used for this purpose more than they should be. But I
will say, the anesthesiology residents have said we optimize our sick patients best for surgery compared to many other
specialties.

List any areas of the city that should be avoided: No, this is a very safe area in Queens.
Car needed: No
Frequency of driving and range: I had a car, but you can get away without one for the month. You are at the main
hospital 90% of the time. 1-3 days you could be at their clinic nearby (they have 2 half days of clinic only, and you won't
always be assigned there) or at Flushing hospital. 1 day of the month you may be sent to shadow at the director's busy
office. Uber may be used those few times or you may hitch a ride with another extern/resident.
Daily work hours: 7am rounds daily, cases can go until 12 or until 5 depending on the load. Residents often go over
concepts and teach during down time. You are dismissed in the later afternoon if not much going on, but some days when
a lot is happening you will stick around into evening. Tuesday is usually the heaviest day. Tuesday nights academics until
8:30pm. No weekend call, no night call for externs. Overall the hospital is busy and efficient, but the hours aren't stupid
long like at some other places where you are required to sit around for no reason until 7pm even if everything you can do
is done. Residents here are very practical with time, and you have plenty of work to do (things to look up, emails to send,
presentation to work on, journal articles to summarize) that you will be doing when done with your day.
Surgical strengths of the program: Forefoot elective (hammertoes, bunions), Forefoot trauma (Lisfranc), Rearfoot trauma
(ankle, pilon), Wound debridement, Amputations
Other: Super varied surgery here. Elective and recon cases brought by attendings both in Lombardi's practice and the
others who are involved in the program. Plenty of trauma coming into the main hospital, all foot trauma is given to
podiatry. Ankle trauma at main hospital split between ortho and podiatry depending on the day, but we get a fair
amount. Flushing ankle and foot everything goes to podiatry. Plenty of interesting infections and amputation and
wounds/skin flaps stuff comes into the hospital. Attendings are well versed in different surgical concepts so willing to do
many things for resident exposure. Overall incredible surgical variety and volume.
Level of role in surgery: Trusted to throw screws and suture
Other:
Additional comments: Very worthwhile to extern here. There is a false misconception that because they are very
selective with who is ranked, and because it's possible to be ranked with high grades and a strong interview then the
month is not necessary...but I very much disagree. 1. You will learn more in this month than most others because they are
so into teaching. 2. OR exposure is great, will scrub so many different types of cases here. 3. Unless you are top 10 and
have an incredible interview (plenty of top 10ers don't interview well that CRIP day), the month is super necessary and
will help the residents and faculty decide if you fit. 4. You will see how incredibly efficient the place runs, and appreciate
the facility. Hands down shortest OR turnover time! 5. It has happened every year or 2 that someone with not the highest
GPA is ranked, and matches here. As long as you know your stuff and show it, you have a shot. Worth spending a
month!!! Will change how you see other places.

Based on experience, type of ED cases on-call residents were paged for [A. Podiatric emergencies, fractures, and
serious diabetic wound care; B. Minor issues (ingrown nails, plantar fasciitis)]: Podiatric emergencies, fractures, and
serious diabetic wound care
Surgical strengths of the program: Forefoot elective (hammertoes, bunions), Forefoot trauma (Lisfranc), Rearfoot trauma
(ankle, pilon), Wound debridement, Amputations
Other: Lots of elective forefoot and really varied bunion procedures, plenty of recon and lots of Charcot. Younger
attendings doing rearfoot, plus Ortho attendings let our residents do a lot. Varied infections and amps exposure. Lots of
new exposure at Queens Hospital Center as well during residency.
Level of role in surgery: Allowed to suture
Other:
Program strengths: Pediatrics, Wound care, Sports medicine, Dermatology, Elective surgeries
Other:
Additional comments: One of the best programs in NY. Academics, attendings, exposure is amazing. Patient population is
great to learn in. Sadly the salary is on the lower side but it's only 3 years, and that shouldn't be a determining factor.
Students in clinic are doing all the routine boring stuff so residents are basically attendings, come in for the good stuff.

requires more management and rounding. Residents are very intelligent and the atmosphere is relaxed and a family-like

Additional comments: Phoenixville is a well-rounded program that has more of an emphasis on clinic as opposed to
inpatient hospital floor work. The residents seem very happy. It should be noted that Dr. Miller has a fellow who does all
of his cases. The residents don't do much at all in the surgery because of that (but this also depends on the fellow, who
changes yearly).

Additional comments: Sexist comments were pretty rampant at this program. Female residents at this program have a
regular brunch by themselves. There are a lot of locker room talks, and it is a culture for them to talk badly about
residents that are not with them at the moment. It was pretty common to hear an attending or a resident refer to
someone else as "stupid." The silent competition between each resident is pretty crazy here as there are so many
residents in the program. I did not want to spend three years of my life in such an unhealthy environment.

Additional comments: Clinic has a lot of routine care, especially the VA clinic which is basically all nails/calluses (which
you are at for half the month). During surgery there would often be at least 4-5 people scrubbed in (fellow, 2-3 residents
and a student). Did not feel like a "top notch" program.

Additional comments: Tons of clinic. Similar with the OR some attendings are very hands on and residents are doing very
little. As a student you will only do anything with Dr. Sadoskas and maybe Dr. Lynch. The rest of the time you are
shadowing either an attending or a resident. This goes throughout the entire program though. When on call as a 1st year
you must have a 2nd or 3rd year resident with you at all times essentially. A LOT of hand holding here. Decent program.
They get a lot of exposure to every aspect of podiatry from basic clinic, bread and butter podiatry, big recons and charcot
(Sadoskas is a UPMC grad and did Dr. Wukich’s fellowship), and TARs (Shibuya). But there is a lot of hand holding
throughout all 3 years here which can be extremely frustrating and limiting to a resident. Good prep for private practice.
They have had a couple grads go on to complete high level fellowships (Cottom and Lamm). I think that Dr. Sadoskas could
really turn this program into a high level program if given the opportunity but only time will tell.
