Popcorn isn’t new. At excavations in New Mexico, archeologists have
found ancient popcorn. The popcorn, still fluffy and white, had been in tombs
for hundreds of years.
Native Americans were creative in their uses of popcorn. They used
popcorn in decorative headdresses and necklaces. They even made an
unusual soup from popcorn. In the United States today popcorn is popular.
People love to eat popcorn, tasty and crunchy. In a year, the average
American snacks on 73 quarts of popcorn.
Popcorn is a seed with a tiny embryo in it. Around the embryo is a starchy
substance. This becomes large when the seed is heated. The heating creates
the fluffy material of the popcorn. Popcorn, delicious and nutritious, can be a
snack almost anytime. An excess salt and butter, however, can make it
unhealthful for a person.
