Simple, Compound, and complex sentences:

 A simple sentence contains one complete thought.
 Example: Tom Reads. ((Subject + Verb)
 Example: Tom reads novels. (Subject + Verb + Object)
 A compound sentence is two complete thoughts (two independent clauses) connected by a comma
and a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
Example: The students finished class, and they went for lunch.
 A complex sentence has at least one independent and one dependent clause.
Example: Tara ate a cheese roll after she watched the news.
Clause:
 A clause consists of a subject and a verb.
Example: She eats.
 A complete thought is also called an independent clause
Example: She eats bananas. (Complete thought)
Tara ate a cheese roll after she watched the news.
 A dependent clause is usually a supporting part of a sentence, and it cannot stand by itself.
Example: Tara ate a cheese roll after she watched the news.
Conjunctions:
 are used to connect words in a sentence, or to connect complete sentences.
Example: Haley reads books, and she also writes them.
Alan tried hard, but he still lost the match.
 Coordinating conjunctions join two independent clauses to form a compound sentence.
The words “FAN BOYS” will help you remember the coordinating conjunctions.
For And Nor But Or Yet So
 A subordinating conjunction is a word that connects an independent clause and dependent clause.
i.e. after, because, if, as , when , while, although, where, since etc.
Example: The alligator would take a longer vacation if he could afford to.
I met them when we were in Paris.
Run-On Sentences:
 A run-on sentence contains two complete thoughts that are not joined together properly.
Example: I really like Joe he is a nice guy
There are four ways of correcting run‐ on sentences:
1. Separate the two sentences using a period.
Example: The math test was very short. It had only10 questions.
2. Make a compound sentence.
Example: Sammy enjoys going to the movies, but I enjoy staying home.
3. Connect the two ideas with a semi‐ colon.
Example: The math test was very short; it only had 10 questions.
4. Create a complex sentence.
Example: Although I enjoy knitting, I don’t do it very often.
Task 1:
Directions: Read each run‐ on sentence. Choose the sentence that correctly punctuates the run‐ on.

4. It is easy to multiply by 10 you just add a 0 to the number.
