OPERATOR MANUAL
ATS: (Automatic Transfer Switch) a device that guarantees power to the load by switching from the normal power supply
(Mains) to the emergency power supply (GENSET). The power disconnection devices, GCB and MCB, are found inside
it. These can consist of a switch, a contactor or a changeover switch.
ERROR CODE: refers to the SPN and FMI diagnostic alphanumeric codes used in the SAE J1939 Standard. They are
used by service centres to identify behaviours or causes of defects in the motor.
Thanks to the SAE1939 communication protocol, the ERROR CODES can provide very precise and specific information.
DISPLAY: refers to the video screen on which the data provided or processed by the electronic GUARD TOUCH device
are displayed.
ECU: stands for ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT, which identifies the electronic controller installed in the motor. Its
function is to control the injection and rotation speed. Moreover, it verifies that the motor runs smoothly and stops it if the
operating conditions do not fall within the limits allowed or become hazardous.
EJP: specific operating mode for the French market. It is active in the AUTO mode and forces the GENSET to start-up
with forced supply to the load even in the presence of the Mains.
FMI: identification numeric code related to the SAE 1939 Standard, which identifies the severity of the recorded fault.
GCB: (Genset Circuit Breaker) identifies the disconnection device of the power produced by the alternator. It generally
consists of a switch, a contactor or a changeover switch. It can be installed on the GENSET or in the ATS.
GUARD TOUCH: electronic device that controls the smooth operation of the generating set. Also determines the
operating modes and cycles according to the configuration. All the gathered information appears on the display, which
also accepts operator commands.
MCB: (Main Circuit Breaker) identifies the disconnection device of the mains power supply. It generally consists of a
switch, a contactor or a changeover switch. It is usually installed in the ATS.
OPERATING MODE: identifies the status in which the machine is programmed to work, according to the type of system.
The operating modes are: OFF, MAN, AUTO and TEST.
OFF: safe operating mode with all the GENSET commands disabled.
MAN: operating mode with the GENSET commands controlled directly by the operator.
AUTO: operating mode with the GENSET commands controlled automatically
TEST: operating mode where the GENSET is automatically started up and AUTOMATIC operation is
simulated.
OPERATOR: a person with appropriate training, knowledge and experience to use the GENSET while assessing the
risks and hazards.
MAINS: primary distribution system, which the user connects to for electrical power supply
SPM: stands for SINGLE PRIME MOVER, which identifies a single GENSET to power an island load. These GENSETS
are manually operated as they have no autonomous start-up system and are controlled by an operator directly on site.
SSB: stands for SINGLE STAND-BY, which identifies a single GENSET to power an island load in an emergency status
on the primary Mains network. A GENSET configured this way can autonomously control its start-ups and switchover
times of the ATS, while also controlling the quality of the Mains.
SPN: identification numeric code related to the SAE 1939 Standard, which identifies the type of recorded fault.
TOUCH SCREEN: is a plastic film applied on the display. Its function is to detect the presence and position of an object
in contact within an area on the screen and allows direct interaction with the icons displayed.
ALARM STATUS: is an abnormal operating status in the GENSET, recorded by the GUARD TOUCH. This can be
activated if hazardous operating conditions arise, which could damage the GENSET, property or persons. When one of
these conditions occurs, a buzzer is sounded and a text message appears on the display.
If the GENSET is running, it is switched off when an ALARM status is triggered; if, on the other hand it was off, start-up
is disabled.
MAIN PAGE: or PAGE 1/5. This page contains the most important information regarding the GENSET. The GUARD
TOUCH device will automatically return to the MAIN PAGE if the device is not interacted with for six minutes.
POWER-ON: start-up sequence of the GUARD TOUCH board as from when it is powered up to when the MAIN PAGE is
displayed.

On behalf of Visa Spa, we would like to thank you for having purchased a product of ours.
Your GENSET is equipped with the control and protection device called GUARD TOUCH, which is developed with the
latest technology and allows the operator to interact with the GENSET via the touch control system directly on the
display, without using external buttons.
The GUARD TOUCH device is intended to command and control the GENSET, as well as monitor and protect the motor
and alternator. This device offers several uses: in MANUAL mode, by operating directly on the start and stop controls, or
AUTOMATIC mode. The latter allows the start-up and operating cycles to be controlled without the operator present, by
following the specifically set program.
A very high level Man - Machine interface has been developed thanks to the dimensions of the display and the high
performance of the microprocessor, allowing for complete, clear, intuitive communication, which can be customised
according to the system requirements. A wide range of interaction with other control systems is also possible, such as
with control systems of mechanically or electronically set diesel engines, gas engines, or latest generation common rail
via CAN SAE J1939 communication.
This manual, together with those of the engine and alternator and all the other documents delivered with the machine,
are an integral part of the “Visa Generating Set” (hereinafter called GENSET).
These are intended to be consulted by all those involved in the life cycle of the machine and must therefore, always be
kept and made accessible to the operator. We therefore recommend each document to be read carefully.
Compliance with all the safety requirements is the customer's responsibility.
The GUARD TOUCH device can be highly customised and therefore, used on various types of systems.
The following types are described in this manual:
- SPM with AUTOSTART System (the GENSET is used via remote control with external automatic systems)
- SSB System (the GENSET is used in automatic service for a Mains emergency)
The GENSET is a machine intended to be used by duly trained personnel. Errors when installing or using
the machine can seriously damage the user system, the machine itself or injure those involved.
There can be hazardous voltages inside the generating set and the control board even with the GENSET
switched off: do not start-up, perform maintenance, repairs or alterations without specific knowledge or
precise guidelines. All the operations must always be performed in compliance with the safety standards.
Read through this manual, which is attached to the GENSET user instructions. If still in doubt after having
consulted this document or the GENSET user instructions, please contact the authorised GENSET service
centre.
The touch screen display must be cleaned with the GUARD TOUCH device switched off. Hazardous
commands for the operators or the system powered by the GENSET could be activated if cleaned while
the device is switched on.
The following must not be done on the surface of the TOUCH SCREEN:
- do not clean with organic solvents, acids or alkaline solutions;
- do not clean with any chemical substance in general;
- do not touch if your hands are dirty with oily substances, chemicals, glue, powder or abrasive substances;
- do not use sharp objects on the surface; if anything, use special plastic pens, specific for touch screen devices;
- do not go near the surface with cellular phones or appliances that are sources of electromagnetic interference.
The following must be complied with for proper use and to clean the surface of the TOUCH SCREEN:
- only a clean and soft electrostatic cloth is to be used to clean the surface;
- only use a cloth dampened with water, neutral detergent or ethanol.
It is important for the GENSET to be switched off and prevent it from being started up before performing
any maintenance or control on it or the system it is connected to.
1. stop the unit and open the machine switch;
2. set the key to the OFF position and remove it from the control panel;
3. press the Emergency button;
4. wait for the machine to cool down;
5. open the battery cut-off switch (if installed)
6. disconnect any connection to the external network, such as preheating systems, network detection
systems, battery chargers and automatic tank filling systems.
WARNING: Remember that the battery cut-off switch must be opened with the motor stopped and
the GUARD TOUCH device switched off. If this requirement is not complied with, damage could be
caused to the battery charger alternator, such as saved data being lost.
Attention: always make sure that the GCB is in the open OFF/0 position when the GENSET is started up.
Before closing the GCB by setting it to the ON/I position, always make sure there are no automatic systems
connected that could start-up inadvertently and pose a risk for persons or property or maintenance is being
performed on live parts.
The diagrams in this manual are purely indicative and depend on the type of system and configuration you
have purchased.

up control is enabled (AUTOSTART); in this mode, the GENSET is started up
and stopped via remote control, which can be a clock, a sensor, radio control,
etc.
The AUTO status in an SSB system (Mains failure rescue) allows the
GENSET to be automatically started if a power cut occurs, powers the user
system and shuts down the machine when normal conditions are re-
established.

HELP BUTTON
The operations to use the Guard Touch device are described below.
The generating set is a machine intended to be used by duly trained personnel. Errors when installing or
using the machine can seriously damage the user system, the machine itself or injure those involved.
Set the ignition key to the 1/ON position to switch the GUARD TOUCH device on (see the figure at the
side).
Please note that after six minutes, the GUARD TOUCH device will automatically return to the MAIN PAGE.
The MAIN PAGE can have different graphic layouts: either of three synoptics appear and change according
to the different types of system and GENSET use (see Paragraph 4.2).
In order to use the GENSET safely and make the most of the GUARD TOUCH device, it is recommended to read this
manual, so as to become familiar with the controls and the information present on the display.
5 intermittent, very fast beep tones: used for Power-ON and Power-OFF
Intermittent, slow beep tones: used to signal the GENSET start-up cycle in progress
Single short beep tones: used to signal a button has been pressed
Once the MAIN PAGE appears on the display, the type of system
that programmed the GENSET is identified from the acronym on the
synoptic.
The image below will appear once POWER-ON is complete, and is the typical MAIN PAGE of an SPM system.
Area dedicated to the system synoptic and rapid access controls to the
measurement pages. The synoptic represents the SPM system,
consisting of the GENSET, the switch (GCB) and the load. The switch
(GCB) with the relative “open/close” control button only appears if the
control is set in the GUARD TOUCH.
Hereunder is the description of the controls present and how to use them.
Unless programmed otherwise, once the power-on is complete, the GUARD TOUCH device is set
to the OFF operating status.
The mode sets the GENSET in a blocked condition and no control or command is active.
Once pressed, a pop-up will appear with the buttons associated to the possible operating
modes within.
Depending on how the GUARD TOUCH is configured, the SPM systems can display two different pop-ups.
These are associated to two different GENSET operating modes.
The pop-up with the OFF and MAN buttons identifies a type of GENSET in which the start and
stop controls are manually managed directly by the operator on the GENSET.
How the manual controls are used directly by the operator to start and stop the GENSET
is described below.
Touch the MAN button to set the MANUAL operating mode. If the command is
accepted, the pop-up is disabled.
Then touch the button to control the GENSET start-up, which will occur within a
few seconds.
In order to prevent confusion and errors in the controls, the START and STOP buttons
always appear alternately on the display.
The user system must be equipped with appropriate power supply disconnecting devices during the start and
stop phases.
Starting and stopping the motor with the power supply connected can damage the GENSET and the user
system.
5.3.2.SPM System: using the GENSET in AUTO mode with the remote start-up function
(AUTOSTART)
The pop-up contains the AUTO operating mode together with the OFF and MAN
functions, described in the previous paragraph
In this new operating mode, the GUARD TOUCH device automatically starts-up and
stops the GENSET when a device is connected correctly and activates the opening and
closing of a contact (e.g. clock, manual selector, sensor, radio control, etc.).
In this operating mode, the GENSET start-up and stop control is assigned to a remote system.
Before selecting the AUTO function, make sure that the GENSET cannot be started inadvertently (e.g. clock,
manual selector, sensor, radio control, etc.).
Once the MAIN PAGE appears on the display, the type of system that
programmed the GENSET is identified from the acronym on the synoptic.
The image below will appear once POWER-ON is complete, and is the typical
MAIN PAGE of an SSB system.
If the ATS switchover panel has not been requested, make sure that appropriate interlock devices are set up
in the distribution system between the Mains and the GENSET in order to guarantee the latter is solely used
in an island network.
Hereunder is the description of the controls present and how to use them.
Unless programmed otherwise, once the power-on is complete, the GUARD TOUCH device is
set to the OFF operating status.
The mode sets the GENSET in a blocked condition and no control or command is active.
Then touch the OFF status button to set a different operating mode.
Once touched, a window will appear with the buttons associated to the possible
operating modes within, which can be selected; see the description below.
The following chapters fully describe how to operate with the various operating modes.
In this operating mode, the GENSET can be started and stopped via the buttons.
In order to prevent confusion and errors in the controls, the START and STOP buttons
always appear alternately on the display.
When in the MAN mode, the ATS switchover can be controlled via the synoptic buttons.

open command. If the command is successful, the contact icon will switch from open to closed .
- when the command button turns to negative tones , the function is available but not active, example:
when the GCB is open and the GENSET is off
Attention: the display of the open and closed contact status in the synoptic indicate
the logic status of the GUARD TOUCH and not the actual status of the ATS.
Before selecting the AUTO function, make sure that the GENSET cannot be started inadvertently, (example:
no Mains, remote commands are active or the periodic test functions are active).
The AUTO status sets up the GENSET for Mains failure rescue.
The operating cycle involves the automatic start-up of the unit in the event of a power cut, the
user system to be powered and the GENSET to be shutdown when the Mains normal
conditions are re-established.
The TEST function simulates the GENSET behaviour in AUTOMATIC mode in the event
of a power cut. It is used as a GENSET operation test and that of the GUARD TOUCH
control cycles, without forcing ATS switchover, (unless programmed otherwise).
- 1/5 MAIN PAGE: displays the most important measurements of the GENSET
- 2/5 Page with the general electrical MEASUREMENTS: displays all the electrical measurements of the
GENSET and the Mains in detail
- 3/5 page with the motor MEASUREMENTS: displays all the motor measurements in detail
- 4/5 Page of the motor Diagnostics via CAN-bus: displays any motor error codes
- 5/5 MAINTENANCE page: displays the maintenance schedule of the GENSET
The icons can be used on the MAIN PAGE and the scrolling buttons on the synoptic to rapidly and immediately access
certain pages.
It is recommended to never set the ignition key in the 0/OFF position to switch the motor off, but to always
use the stop button (see the following chapters for the details).
After having stopped the machine via the STOP command, switch the GUARD TOUCH device
off by setting the ignition key to the 0/OFF position (see the figure at the side).
Each time the GUARD TOUCH device is switched off, the data logged up to that moment are automatically saved; a
window on the display will indicate the saving status (see the figure below).
Hereunder is a description of how the pages are composed and how they are associated to the types of systems. As
discussed in previous chapters, the GUARD TOUCH device can control two types of systems in the various
configurations: SPM and SSB.

Four "lamps" appear on page 4/5 together with the ERROR CODES, which identify the various severity levels:
PROTECT: this lamp is used to indicate a fault in the electrical circuit. This generally occurs when the sensor
malfunctions or there are interruptions in the electrical connections.
AMBER: this lamp is used to indicate that the motor is operating abnormally, however, not major enough to stop
the motor. This signal generally occurs when the temperatures or pressures are slightly above or below the
normal operating conditions.
RED: this lamp is used to indicate that the motor operating condition is hazardous. The motor is stopped to
prevent damage. The motor is generally stopped when the temperatures or pressures are must higher or lower
than the normal operating conditions.
MALFUNCTION: this lamp is used to indicate that there is problem related to emissions.
Thanks to the SAE1939 communication protocol, the ERROR CODES can provide very precise information, which can
only be interpreted correctly by the service centre of the motor manufacturer.
Even if all the ERROR CODES are generally provided in the motor manual, do not undertake maintenance
operations but contact the authorised GENSET service centre.

Attention: In certain conditions, the commands sent by SMS or via the Internet, may not be delivered, or be
delayed , due to problems such as roaming , borders , lack of coverage , holidays , etc.
Attention: sending remote commands could generate risks if persons are near the machine.
Close off the machine and/or system components connected to it that might generate risks in order to
prevent access to unauthorised personnel.
Set up indications that the machine may start up autonomously via remote commands.
Before undertaking inspection and maintenance operations, the machine must be BLOCKED by the
personnel in charge (refer to the GENSET manual).
8.1. Features
The quad-band GSM-GPRS modem is suitable to operate in all frequencies used in various parts of the world.
When the GPRS modem is connected to the GUARD TOUCH, it allows the GENSET to be monitored in the two ways
described below.
- receive the following commands via SMS from the 5 numbers to act directly on the GENSET:
set the various operating modes
control the start and stop of the GENSET
control the ATS
request an SMS to be sent with information on the GENSET status
request an SMS to be sent with information on the electrical measurements of the Mains and the
GENSET
A SIM that is only enabled for voice traffic is required to use the functions described above.
A SIM that is enabled for M2M data traffic (Machine to Machine) is required to use the functions described above.
If the GPS module is installed, the coordinates of the GENSET position can also be obtained.
At the time of installation and commissioning, check the correct connection/operation between the GENSET
and your device.
Before the test, verify that no personnel is operating the machine or on the mains connected to it and that the
system is ready to receive the load.
8.2.1.Entering phone numbers in the GUARD TOUCH phone book and configuring parameters.
after having switched on the GUARD TOUCH device, access the “200 General”menu after having entered
the 761 password.
configure the various parameters of the menu and enter the telephone numbers enabled for control (refer to
the description of the menus below)
once the parameters are configured, exit from the menu
This allows the various parameters to be entered and the phone book to be saved in the memory of the GT.
obtain a SIM for voice traffic (a SIM enabled for data traffic is not required)
make sure that the GENSET and the GUARD TOUCH card are off
Attention: for the SMS messages to be sent or received via a GPRS modem, the PIN entry on start-up must be disabled
in the SIM (use a mobile phone for the operation; contact the dealer of the telephone service for any relative clarification).
access the GPRS modem and remove the SIM-holder by pressing the yellow button at the side with a sharp
object
place the SIM card inside the housing and reinsert it by following the insertion guides
switch the GUARD TOUCH on and make sure that the LEDs in the GPRS light up cyclically
keep the SET button at the front of the GPRS pressed until the yellow and green LEDs light up as follows:
then release the SET button
This allows the GUARD TOUCH card/s connected in the RS485 bus to be logged in the memory of the GPRS modem
and copy the previously entered phone books.
The table below describes the operation of the coloured LEDs used to communicate the operating status of the GPRS modem.
The LEDs indicate the status of the various services, on a rotation basis of every 5 seconds: GSM field, GPRS connection, GPS,
GUARD TOUCH monitoring.
The colour indicates that the LED is on; grey indicates the LEDs are off; black indicates the LEDs with a behaviour that is
not described.
SET is pressed; devices are being recorded (priority with respect to other warnings)
touching the button with the icon will access the page of the GPRS modem.
The page that appears and which is illustrated below, is only visible if the GUARD TOUCH card communicates with the
GPRS modem. It contains the most important information regarding the GPRS modem, the phone books and e-mail lists.
1 = Indicates the strength of the radio signal of the site. A low signal does not guarantee proper operation of the system.
2 = Indicates the connection status with the server.
3 = Phone book of telephone numbers used for SMS monitoring.
: it indicates that the number is enabled to send and receive SMSs.
: it indicates that the number is in the phone book, however, it is not enabled to send or receive SMSs.
4 = Indicates the UTC date and time.
5 = List of e-mail addresses used for monitoring via e-mail.
: Indicates that the e-mail address is enabled to receive monitoring e-mails.
: indicates that the e-mail address is in the list, however, it is not enabled to receive monitoring e-mails
6 = Indicates the latitude and longitude detected by the GPS
7 = Indicates the metres above sea level and the number of satellites connected to the GPS.
Only the parameters that can be edited with authorisation level 1 (LV1) and level 2 (LV2) are discussed below. Each parameter is identified by its own code, called Parameter
Code (abbreviated to “PC”).
The remaining parameters will not be discussed in this manual, even though they are displayed, as they can only be edited by service centres.

PCB:__ serial number of the GUARD TOUCH card (indicated on the page of the GT display data
plate).
PIN_: Authorisation pin, refer to parameter P 281.9
CMDx: name of the command/s sent to the GT
For the command to be recognised as being valid by the GPRS converter, the following rules must
be followed when compiling the SMS message string.
- at least one or more spaces must be guaranteed between the strings of the various fields
(GE, PCBxxxxxx, PIN, CMDx)
- the fields can be written in upper or lower case with no distinction
- in the SMS
- up to five different types of commands can be entered and these are processed in the
order in which they are entered.
In order to exploit the full potential of the system and obtain the required result, the user must
be aware of the GENSET operation by entering the various command combinations in an
orderly and appropriate manner. It must also be noted that the interval between the
commands is five seconds; if the time elapses and the command is not successful, the
remaining commands in the SMS string are disregarded.
Each time the GPRS converter receives a command it replies to the number that commanded it by
sending an SMS with the result of the command. For the OFF, MAN, AUTO, TEST, GCB-I, GCB-
0, MCB-I, MCB-0, RESET, START and STOP commands, the reply SMS follows the example
shown below.
For the INFO1 and INFO2 commands the reply SMS follows the example indicated below.

The load shedding gives a signal for the disconnection of the non-priority loads if the
GENSET approaches the output threshold of its maximum power.
Sets the 1st active power threshold (% on nominal kW), which enables the output when
2 751 Load Shedding 1
exceeded.
Notes: the value in % refers to the power in kVA indicated to parameter P408 multiplied by
0.8. The function is only active in the AUT status.
