Section 6: Teacher Candidate Teacher Interview Video

Teacher Candidate Interview Video

This section of my portfolio will include a mock interview video using screencast. In this

video I will answer interview questions as if I were sitting in front of a real school board. Ideally

this will help culminate all my experience and showcase my ability to incorporate technology in

new and innovative ways. In the video I provide further background information, as well as tools

and previous teaching experiences that have led to me where I am today. This interview has been

added to my teacher website as well in hope parents and administration alike will watch and get

a deeper sense of what I can achieve as an educator.

Teacher Candidate Interview Questions & Responses

 Briefly share a little about your background experiences that have led you to choose a

career in education.

When talking about my path to education I have to start with my family. My mother and most

of the sisters have been teachers for over 30 years. That being said, all the way up till around

2014 when I was 25 I was convinced that teaching was just not for me. I had entered into the

education program at SUNY Fredonia and then promptly dropped the major after letting my

speech impediment get the best of me. I spent the next 4 years practicing my public speaking,

and slowly falling into a teacher role. My first true teaching experience was as a long-term K-8

P.E. substitute for about 6 months. When June came and the job was over I was really sad and

distraught; certainly sadder than I thought I would be. After that I made my way into a company

that taught soccer to toddlers and engineering to middle schoolers. During the day I was Coach

Luke to over 200 children a week and at night I was Mr. Luke to 100 budding engineers. This

helped fill the void left by my teaching job but I was still longing for something more. After
spending almost, a year at the job I have now, Summer Camp coordinator and Lead Teacher, I

decided to stop fighting destiny and just go back to school. My time at Medaille had been

nothing short of life changing; I plan on using all my experience gained to move on to be the best

of the best and never look back.

 What have you learned in your teaching program that will make you and excellent

classroom teacher and colleague?

The first thing that comes to mind is to talk about the edTPA and all the information I have

learned from it. These new types of documents/lesson plans are extensive and entirely

comprehensive demanding accommodations for every IEP and 504 present in the classroom. It

also requires you to put thought into how you are going to motivate your students and activate

their prior knowledge in order to prime them for the lesson. Furthermore, I have become more

acquainted with a myriad of different pieces of technology I could use in the classroom; Weebly,

SMART tech, Kahoots, Screencast-o-matic, Prezi just to name a few. Technology is ever

changing and ever present and in today’s classroom it is more important than ever to be complete

tech-literate. Lastly, I will mention that tools I know have in my utility belt to help solve any type

of problem I might encounter. Through my exploration of different philosophies of education and

subsequently the philosophers behind the ideas I have gotten many different points of view on

classroom management, assessments, behavior, and designed engaging lessons. With a more

diverse tool kit I am well equipped to deal with almost any problem.

 Provide us with an example of a lesson you taught. How did you integrate it with other

curriculum areas, address the CCLS, technology, student engagement and motivation?

What were the results of the lesson?

One of my lessons I had worked into my portfolio was a literacy lesson based for 1st graders

in which we practiced beginning blends and consonant sounds. In this lesson I used my acoustic

guitar and we had a sing-a-long to the tune of the Hokey-Pokey. At the time I was just thinking

of a way to get the children better engaged but afterwards it seemed I had successfully combined

two different curriculum areas into one. The results of the lesson were very successful; the

students had a really good time and were able to demonstrate their understanding in a very

organic way. If I wanted to introduce technology into the lesson, I could very easily make a

recording, or use a plethora of karaoke applications. A separate project that I had already briefly

mentioned before that does showcase my fluency with technology specifically is my Weebly

website. I can take some time now to show you around my website and give you a quick

overview of the things included, and what you can do with it.

 How will your knowledge of the current trends in education inform you as an educator in our

district/boad/school?

When I hear “current trends” I think of technology in classrooms. But that trend really started

years ago and now simply having technology is not enough. We need to be efficient and effective

with the use of technology in our classrooms. Research is out now on both sides of the fence on

whether or not technology is effective. This leads to many professionals believing that in order

for technology to be effective they need to be implemented by good teachers. An iPad can just as

easily be a distraction as a benefit; this goes for most technology. A second trend that it making

waves is that there is research coming out now that there are many different kinds of learners.

Many well-respected educational philosophers such as David Kolb and Howard Gardner have

posited that students learn in extremely different, but just as effective ways. This means that

education is no longer a “one size fits all” scenario and we need to adapt our teaching as

necessary.
 Why should we hire you instead of the other applicants we have interviewed?

This document in a way does speak for itself. This is an extensive work that covers my

strengths, philosophies and notable work. That being said I bring a lot to the table that cannot be

seen in a document or written down on paper. First and foremost, I am almost always a positive

force of energy. When the going gets tough I am never one to complain or sulk but rather channel

that energy into finding the best solution possible. I believe that happiness is contagious both for

students and peers alike and putting our best feet forward not only makes us feel better, but those

around us too. Creativity comes to mind as well; with a degree in English I have always fancied

myself a creative person not only is the respects of writing and art but with finding solutions to

hard problems. Lastly, I have been a strong believer in maintaining a good parent-teacher

relationship. Through my experiences I have learned that god forbid something bad happens to a

child that you couldn’t anticipate you then have a healthy relationship with their parent. Having

these healthy relationships makes tough conversations easier and I have experience in this way.

Conclusion

The video and transcript both include many things that you cannot get anywhere else in this

document. While being one of the smallest sections I believe this is one of the most impactful

ones. Not only does it showcase the skills mentioned previously, it always gives me a chance to

argue my own case as to why I deserve this position over others. My hopes that I have proven

this effectively and given you the desire to meet me in person!
