Tuning Manual STR-101

1 Introduction
The STR-101 Sweep TRansmitter electronics (STR) is the transmitting part of
LUCATRON's sweep radio-frequency Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) systems.
In conjunction with the SRC-201 (Sweep ReCeiver electronics SRC), the STR forms the
basis for LUCATRON's two-antenna systems. Since all LUCATRON systems have CE
verification, it is important that all configurations and limitations described herein be
observed.

This STR-101 Tuning Manual describes only the functions and tuning procedures of the
STR electronics.
The functions of the receiver are described in the SRC-201 Tuning Manual.

Ordering information for all accessories mentioned in this manual (opto components, AC
adapter, cables, etc.) are listed in the appendix under Ordering Information.

2 Transmitter Electronics Overview

2.1 General
One STR electronics is needed for each transmitter antenna. The STR provides the
antenna with a frequency-modulated, high-frequency signal.

The STR is switchable and thus can be driven as either a master or slave. In order to avoid
mutual interference with nearby systems, the STR can be synchronized with them.

The STR can use cable or opto synchronization. The opto synchronization components
have plug-in connectors, but are only so equipped upon request and as such should be
separately ordered as options.

The STR also has a synchronization and supply output for connecting a DAV-200
LUCATRON Deactivator.

An STR can be powered by either 18 VAC or 24 VAC.

We recommend using an 18 VAC LUCATRON AC Adapter with its built-in power supply
filter. Using this adapter in conjunction with the printed circuit board filter guarantees not
only optimal filtering, but also compliance with CE standards.

The STR has an additional filtered power supply output. It was foreseen for connecting
further electronic boards (e.g., SRC-201 receiver—see the Supply and Filter Concept
chapter).

2.2 STR Electronics Block Diagram

The next sections describe the functional blocks shown in the following block diagram.

2.2.1 Transmitter Output

There are different ways to provide the transmitter output with a frequency-modulated,
high-frequency signal:
 In master operation, the signal of the master oscillator generated on the STR is used.
 In slave operation, choose either slave input "Cable In X3" or "Opto In B3" slave input
using jumper J4.

Tuning Manual STR-101

The transmitter output is equipped with a red LED (TMP) overload indicator. When lit, it
indicates if the output stage has been shutdown owing to an overload (see the Tuning
Adjustments section).
You can adjust the output voltage of the transmitter output using LEVEL potentiometer
R239.

2.2.2 Master / Slave Switchover

You can change operation of the STR from master to slave using jumpers J6 and J7.
For slave operation, additionally choose between cable and opto operation using
jumper J4.

2.2.3 Master Operation

The internal oscillator generates a frequency-modulated, high-frequency signal
of 7.4 to 8.8 MHz.
Three different modulation frequencies are available: 79, 82 and 85 Hz. Select the
frequency desired using jumper J8.
The signal of the internal oscillator is available at the outputs X5 for cable synchronization,
and at B1, B2 for opto synchronization (if the opto senders are equipped).

2.2.4 Opto Synchronization

Select the opto synchronization mode using jumper J4 (assuming the opto receiver is
equipped at location B3).
The electrical signal corresponding to the light signal is available at outputs X5 for cable
synchronization and at B1, B2 for opto synchronization (assuming the opto receiver is
equipped).

2.2.5 Cable Synchronization

You select cable synchronization using jumper J4.
You connect the synchronization input signal at input X3.
The input signal is ready at outputs X5 for cable synchronization and at B1, B2 for opto
synchronization (assuming the opto receiver is equipped).
The synchronization signal is also available at X3 as an output signal (not conditioned). If
such a daisy chain signal is used, insert only jumper J5 on the last STR of the chain
(activates the terminating resistor).

2.2.6 Deactivator Connection

A low frequency synchronization signal and a 12 VCD supply for connecting a DAV-200
LUCATRON deactivator is available at connector X2.
Use of this connection has the advantage that the deactivator needs no external AC
source.

3 Transmitter Electronics Configurations

3.1 Supply and Filter Concept
For undisturbed reception, any interference picked up from power cables must be
eliminated. To be sure of achieving this, the maximum permitted unfiltered cable length
must not be exceeded. The filter concept below is implemented using filters built into the
LUCATRON power supplies, the filters in the STR and SRC electronics (X1 OUTF) and
external supplementary filters.
WARNING: The filtered power output (OUTF) can conduct the current of two
supplementary STR or SRC electronics only.

Tuning Manual STR-101

NOTE: The maximum permitted unfiltered cable length is 5 meters. Intermediate filters
should be used every 4 meters for longer power cables. Intermediate filters of this type are
available from LUCATRON as an option.
Use wires having a cross section of at least 0.75 mm2 for the power supply wiring. If the
environment exhibits strong interference, then use shielded power supply wiring.

3.2 Synchronization Concept

If two or more TX antennas are installed in close proximity, the TX electronics (STR) have
to be synchronized with one another. Synchronization is possible using either fiber optic
cables or HF cables.
The following 3-stage synchronization diagram is applicable to both opto synchronization
and cable synchronization:

Three-stage synchronization

For small installations (up to 7 STR), one STR is master and the others are
synchronized to it.
For installations having more than 7 STR, install a supplementary master unit.

NOTE: The synchronization signal should only be repeated once per installation.

3.3 Opto Synchronization Mode

Owing to its low susceptibility to interference, opto synchronization is preferable to cable
synchronization.
Only equip the opto components needed for the application. All opto components are
pluggable and have to be attached to the boards using tie wraps. Holes are provided next
to each opto component for looping tie wraps.
Opto components equipped:
 Agilent HFBR-2406 Opto Receiver
 Agilent HFBR-1404 Opto Transmitter

The following configurations can be deduced from the 3-stage synchronization diagram
(also see Configuration Overview and its Jumper Settings in the appendix):

 Master:
o Master mode J6, J7 (1 –2).
o Equip opto transmitters B1 and B2. If only one opto transmitter (B1) is to be
equipped, insert jumper J1 (see below).

 Repeater:
o Slave mode J6, J7 (2 –3).
o Opto synchronization mode J4 (1 –2).
o Insert opto receiver B3.
o Equip opto transmitters B1 and B2. If only one opto transmitter (B1) is to be
equipped, insert jumper J1 (see below)

 Slave:
o Slave mode J6, J7 (2 –3).
o Opto synchronization mode J4 (1 –2).
o Equip opto receiver B3.

Configuration for equipping one or two opto transmitters:

Opto transmitter: only B1 equipped Opto transmitters: B1 and B2 equipped

(Insert jumper J1) (Remove jumper J1)

An Opto Master Unit can be installed for opto installations having more than 7 STR
(e.g., LUCATRON TSU-10x with up to 16 opto outputs).

Tuning Manual STR-101

3.4 Cable Synchronization Mode

The STR offers the possibility of cable synchronization as standard.

Note: Cable synchronization is considerably more sensitive to interference than opto

synchronization and thus often requires use of ferrite cores to reduce undesirable
resonances.
Cable synchronization should only be implemented in smaller installations having
interference-free environments, where installation by experienced field technicians is
possible. In questionable situations, opto synchronization is preferable to cable
synchronization.

Use two wire, twisted and shielded cables (article no: 899 026 02 12) for cable
synchronization. Avoid phase angle errors by ensuring that the same color wire is always
connected to the relevant terminal (A,B). The cable shielding should be connected at both
sides to the associated STR electronics. There is no danger of ground loops because
relevant disconnections are realized on the printed circuit boards.

The following configurations can be deduced from the "Three-stage synchronization"

diagram (also see Configuration Overview and its Jumper Settings in the appendix)

 Master:
o Master mode J6, J7 (1 –2).
o Use synchronization outputs X5(SYN1 OUT), X5(SYN2 OUT).

 Slave und Repeater:

(Because the required output transformers are always equipped, slaves and
repeaters are identically configured.)
o Slave mode J6, J7 (2 –3).
o Cable synchronization mode J4 (2 –3).
o Synchronization input is X3 (SYN IN).
o Use X5(SYN1 OUT), X5(SYN2 OUT) for the repeater synchronization
outputs.

Note: A prepared (regenerated) signal is available at synchronization outputs X5(SYN1

OUT) and X5(SYN2 OUT) (its use is recommended).
An unprepared looped signal is additionally available at the X3(SYN INT) connector. We
recommend using this signal only in an emergency if an additional STR is needed. If a such
a daisy chain signal is used, ensure only the last STR in the chain has jumper J5 (1–2)
equipped (active termination resistor). All other STRs should have jumper J5 (2–3)
equipped.

3.5 Deactivator LF Synchronization

The 12 VDC supply as well as a low frequency (LF) synchronization signal for the DAV-200
LUCATRON Deactivator are available at connector X2 (SYNDEACT OUT).
(See the Tuning Instructions for the DAV-200 Deactivator for additional information.)

4 Tuning
For the location of connectors, jumpers (J), test points (P) and tuning elements, see the
Tuning Elements Layout in the appendix.
IMPORTANT: Tuning elements not referenced on these tables are for factory use only and
thus should not be adjusted.

4.1 Recommended Instruments

The following instruments are recommended for STR tuning:
 Oscilloscope, 2 channel (100 MHz—could be battery powered)
 Oscilloscope probes (10:1)
 Sweep span meter (Je-tec article no: 963 600 209)
 Multimeter for DC and AC measurements

4.2 Preparation
Ensure that:
 system power is switched off
 the antenna cable is connected to antenna connector X4.
 the desired configuration (master or slave) is selected
 if slave mode is selected, all synchronization connections are made and the
associated jumper settings are set
Do the following:
 Turn the LEVEL potentiometer (R239) clockwise to approx. 90% full power.
 Connect the power supply (18 VAC or 24 VDC) to connector X1.

4.3 Tuning Adjustments

 Turn power on.
 Check that the green LED RDY (ready) lights.
 The red LED TMP (over temperature) should not light.
o If the red LED is on: Ensure that the antenna is connected to the electronics
and that the wiring and the antenna matching board have no short circuits.
o If the LED flickers: Reduce the output power signal using LEVEL
potentiometer R239.
o If the above do not help, replace the STR board.
 Using the AGON Sweep Span Meter, check the STR transmitter parameters as
follows:
o Center frequency 8.1 MHz
o Modulation frequency 82 Hz (select frequency using jumper J8)
o Frequency range 7.4 to 8.8 MHz or less
 Now tune the RX board (see the SRC-201 Tuning Manual)
 If you have difficulty tuning the RX board, measure the STR output signal as follows:
o Connect your oscilloscope probe to P10 (near antenna connector X4) and
its ground to G3. The amplitude should be between 20 and 50 Vpp. The
signal shape can vary slightly depending on the antenna type. Nevertheless,
its amplitude over the entire frequency range should not vary by more than
20%.

Oscilloscope signal (qualitative)

Configuration: Channel 1: 10V DC

Time basis: 50ns
VERT MODE: Channel 1
INT TRIG: Channel 1 ƒ Auto

o Alternately, you can carry out a differential measurement on the signals at

P10 and P11 (channel 1 vs. channel 2, without a ground [earth] connection).
The same criteria hold as for the previous measurement; however, the
amplitude should be between 35 and 90 Vpp.
o If the measurements do not fulfill these criteria, replace the STR electronics.
