Modern Day Slavery: A Culminating Research Project

You have just finished reading Frederick Douglass’s novel The Narrative of the Life
of Frederick Douglass, A Slave. He endured hardships unimaginable to many of us,
today. Often times, when people think of slavery, they think that it ended in 1865.
This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. Slavery still exists, in various
forms, in the 21st century. These include:

Forms of modern slavery

1. Forced labor – any work or services which people are forced to do against their will under the threat of
some form of punishment.
2. Debt bondage or bonded labor – the world’s most widespread form of slavery, when people borrow
money they cannot repay and are required to work to pay off the debt, then losing control over the
conditions of both their employment and the debt.
3. Human trafficking– involves transporting, recruiting or harboring people for the purpose of exploitation,
using violence, threats or coercion.
4. Descent-based slavery – where people are born into slavery because their ancestors
were captured and enslaved; they remain in slavery by descent.
5. Child slavery – many people often confuse child slavery with child labor, but it is much
worse. Whilst child labor is harmful for children and hinders their education and
development, child slavery occurs when a child is exploited for someone else’s gain. It
can include child trafficking, child soldiers, child marriage and child domestic slavery.
6. Forced and early marriage – when someone is married against their will and cannot leave the marriage.
Most child marriages can be considered slavery.
7. Sex slavery - When an adult engages in a commercial sex act, such as prostitution, as the result of force,
threats of force, fraud, coercion or any combination of such means, that person is a victim of trafficking.

YOUR TASK:

PART 1:
You will be in groups of 2-3 to complete this project. Students will identify 1 form of
modern day slavery to focus on. Each student in the group will then research your assigned
topic. Use the provided Resource List to complete your research.

You will then answer the 13 questions on the Research Guide, in addition to providing 5
additional facts

PART 2:
Create a PowerPoint presentation of your findings (YOU WILL PRESENT)

Slide 1: The type of slavery you have been assigned / Include a picture and your group members’ names

Slide 2: Definition of the term

Slides 3 - 7: Responses to questions #3 – #13 from the research guide IN ORDER (Please include each question and
your response to it) Separate this information onto multiple slides so that it isn’t too congested.

Slide 8: Five additional facts regarding the existence of your assigned form of slavery

Include a relevant picture on each slide

PART 3: Present
Research Guide

Please use the following questions to guide your research on the topic of modern slavery. For any question
involving a statistic, be sure to cite your source. Please carefully consider and respond to the following questions on
a separate sheet of paper.
