Laguna de Bay – the largest lake in the Philippines.
- has an area of about 890 square kilometres.
Lake Basin – is surrounded by low-lying plains which form
part of the alluvial lowlands.

Taal Volcano – is known as the the“Vesuvius of the
Philippines”.
Southern Tagalog – is also known as Southwestern Luzon.
- composed of the provinces of
Aurora,Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Marinduque, Occidental
Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Quezon, Rizal and
Romblon.
Five contiguous provinces collectively called
CALABARZON:
1.) Cavite 2.) Laguna 3.) Batangas 4.) Rizal 5.) Quezon
- is a broad anticline characterized by rugged and maturely
eroded topography.
Central part – is made up of rugged mountains.
- divide it into Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro.
Mt. Basco – at the counter rises up to 2,440 meters.
Mt. Halcon – reaches up to 2,520 meters.
Mindoro – has extensive lowlands and rolling foothills.
Marinduque – is an island between the southern tip of
Quezon province and the island of Mindoro.
Province of Romblon – is composed of 3 major islands:
1.) Tablas – is the largest island of the province.
- is 60 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide.
2.) Romblon Island – is egg-shaped with a maximum diameter
of 16 kilometers.
3.) Sibuyan Island – is the 2nd largest.
- is kidney-shaped and has an average diameter of 21
kilometers.
- the climate of the province follows the third type which
shows a longer period of rainfall with a short dry season
lasting for about 3 months.
Palawan – the 5th largest island of the Philippines.
- included as part of Western or Mindanao.
- is mountainous and hilly through its entire length.
- the island belongs to type one climate with a distinct
rhythm of wet and dry season.
The climatic types of Southwestern Luzon are varied:
*First type – China sea, Occidental Mindoro.
- Dry from December – May
- Wet from June – November
ECONOMIC RESOURCES
Southern tagalog
- is essentially an agricultural region.
- theirprincipal crops are rice, coconut, sugar cane, bananas,
abaca, coffee and citrus.
- fishing is an important occupation along the coastal regions.
Oil refineries – found in Batangas city and Bauan in
Batangas and at Rosario, Cavite.
Handicraft manufacture – are common in towns of Laguna,
Cavite, Batangas and Rizal.
Quezon and Aurora – are the principal producers of coconuts
and have rich forest resources.
Tayabas Bay, Lamon Bay, and Ragay gulf – are rich in fishing
grounds of the region.
Marinduque – is rich in mineral resources such as copper,
iron, gold, and silver.
- main agricultural crops are coconut and rice.
Copper – is the principal export product.
Agriculture, mining, and fishing – are the principal economic
activities of Romblon.
rice, corn, vegetables, sugarcane, fruits and coconuts – are
produced for local consumption.
Fishing – is carried in the adjacent seas like Visayassea,
Sibuyan sea, and Romblon pass.
Marble – is the most important mineral product of the region.
Mindoro – their principal crops are rice and coconut.
- their secondary crops are corn, tobacco,
vegetables, fruits, and coffee.
- fishing, logging, and grazing are important
occupations of the island.
- gold, coal and chromite deposits exist.
- means “mine of gold” named by the Spaniards.
Palawan – their dominant activities are agriculture, mining,
forestry, and fishing.
- coconut and rice are their leading crops.
mining of oil, manganese, mercury, copper, chromite, and
silica – makes an important contribution to their economy.
Manganese –is found in Busuanga Islands in the Calamianes
group.
CULTURAL ASPECTS OF SOUTHWESTERN LUZON

Antipolo – is an interesting town of Rizal .
Bamboo organ – is found in the church of Las Pinas.
Kawit - is a historical town in Cavite where the declararation
of the independence of the Philippines was made on June 12,
1898.
Taal Volcano – is a beautiful spot in Batngas.
- it is an island enclosing a lake surrounded by a lake in an
island surrounded by an ocean.
Pagsanjan falls – is a favourite spot of excursionists and
tourists in Laguna.
Los Banos – noted for its hot springs and bath houses.
- is the site of the 1st autonomous unit of the University of the
Philippines System headed by a chancellor.
People of Romblon – speaks the Hiligaynon dialect of Panay.
Romblon - is an important port of call for vessels plying
between Manila, Iloilo, Cebu, and Mindanao.
Mindoro – is unique as the only province where tamaraws are
found.
Palawan – provides the bridge between the Muslim cultures
of Borneo and the Christian traditions of Luzon and the
Visayan islands.
- provides the common territory for the assemblage of
Borneon and Philippine fauna and flora.
- 2nd lowest population density.
Apayao-Kalinga – is the lowest population density.
