Regulator E.M.D. VR-16 Locomotive Voltage Regulator Module
 Circuit Board Design
VR-16 / VR16 Summary:
 Previous Models
MC-10  Designed for Electro-Motive Diesel locomotives, formerly GM's Electro-
      GP-1200 Motive Division.
HDC-90  From the manufacturer that brought you the VR-14 Regulator module.
 Replaces older VR-10, VR-11, VR-13 and VR-14 types of Regulator types
for EMD locomotives.
 Front panel circuit breaker trip protection. Over-voltage, Over-current.
 Battery temperature sensing ability. Adjusts output according to temperature.
 Relatively low cost product based upon core exchange program.

VR-16 Specific Features:

 Power supply/precision reference.

 High Voltage DC type Start-up Relay.
 Battery BTA Temperature measuring Circuits.
 Local Operator Adjust.
 Over-voltage Circuits.
 Over-current Circuits.
 Front Panel Shunt Trip Device.
 Regulator Circuits/pulse-width modulator.
 Test Point Short-Circuit Protection.
 Improved Temperature Stability.

FRONT PANEL:
The front panel consists of one traditional style operator control potentiometer, two
LED indicators and six test points. Also, there is a circuit breaker for operator
intervention. Toggle style circuit breaker switch is labeled with International
standard symbols 0 or 1 representing power off and power on respectively. Up for
ON and down for OFF. For safety purposes, service personnel can disconnect the
auxiliary generator excitation power by simply depressing the circuit breaker handle
downward.

SENSOR DETECTION:
When the battery temperature is within specific parameters and is properly
connected, the BTA lamp (top) is illuminated, indicating that this circuit is selected
and in control. This is the preferred mode of operation for maximum locomotive
battery life. If the sensor reaches (-) 38° Celsius or colder, a sensor open-circuit is
assumed, then the mode of operation is switched from BTA to Local Adjust.
Conversely, if the sensor reaches (+) 48° Celsius or hotter, a sensor short-circuit is
assumed, then the mode of operation is again switched from BTA to Local Adjust.

LOCAL OPERATOR ADJUST:

In the event of a temperature sensor failure, as described above, control is
automatically switched from the preferred BTA mode of operation to the Local
Adjust mode of operation. System voltage is then adjusted and set by the traditional
operator potentiometer located on the module’s lower front panel. This control has a
range from 72 to 76 Volts and once set is fixed. Noting when in this mode of
operation, the system voltage is fixed and will not deviate with temperatures and will
operate as a traditional VR module. The control uses a 10-turn device for fine
adjustment. LED operation will be annunciated on the front panel as described
above. A typical Local Adjust value may be 74 Volts. For systems without a BTA
temperature system or probe, the Local Adjust control will always be illuminated and
the temperature compensation feature will not be available.

OVERVOLTAGE CIRCUITS:
System voltage is monitored and compared to a specific value. If this value is
exceeded, a coordinated pulse is sent to a shunt-trip breaker device mounted on the
VR-16 front panel. A very fast acting circuit breaker will disconnect all excitation to
the auxiliary generator thus protecting the system from an overvoltage for any
extended period of time. For safety purposes, service personnel can disconnect the
auxiliary generator excitation power by simply depressing the circuit breaker handle
downward.

OVERCURRENT CIRCUITS:
Output current is continuously monitored and compared to a specific value. If this
value is exceeded, again, a coordinated pulse is sent to the front panel shunt-trip
breaker. Again, the auxiliary generator field is disconnected. An operator can over-
ride this operation by simply pushing the circuit breaker handle in the downward
direction if necessary. For safety purposes, service personnel can disconnect the
auxiliary generator excitation power by simply depressing the circuit breaker handle
downward.
SHUNT TRIP DEVICE:
A shunt-trip device acting as a circuit breaker is mounted on the front panel for
interaction by service personnel. If an over-current or an over-voltage is sensed by
internal circuitries, as described above, a shut-down command is immediately given
to the trip circuit. This shunt-trip device does not trip by itself, but is commanded by
these internal circuits. Upon sensing a fault, power is applied to an internal trip coil
causing the breaker to instantly trip. The command to the breaker applies full power
but limited to a fraction of a second. Rocker-style breaker switch labeled with
International standard symbols 0 or 1 representing power off and power on
respectively. For safety purposes, service personnel can disconnect the auxiliary
generator excitation power by simply depressing the circuit breaker handle
downward.

TEST POINT PROTECTION:

Each of the system’s critical signals is coupled from the rear I/O connectors to the
front panel test points. In the case of an inadvertent short-circuit by test personnel,
dangerous voltages and destructive fault currents which used to be available with
standard test points are no longer an issue. A protective device has been installed in
series with each of the six front panel test points. If an operator fault were to occur,
the device instantly opens by providing a high resistance in that circuit similarly to
the traditional fuse except that this device will automatically reset itself. High fault
currents and possible destruction to circuit board traces are eliminated. Flashing of
generator fields by jumping test point connections is no longer available.

TEMPERATURE STABILITY:
The overall temperature stability of the module in its operating environment has been
significantly improved over previous VR models.
