Liquefaction is a phenomenon where saturated sand and silt take on the
characteristics of a liquid during the intense shaking of an earthquake. The serious impact
of liquefaction makes concrete buildings shift to other places or even like being swallowed
into the earth all of sudden.
Liquefaction takes place when a quake has increased water pressure in saturated
soil and made particles in the soil lose contact with each other, making the soil -
particularly sandy soil - act like liquid. Liquefaction also happens in wet soils affected by
seismic S waves (second waves). This waves caused ground vibrations during the
earthquakes, especially in a poorly drained fine-grained soils such as sandy, muddy, and
gravelly soils in a reclaimed area. The effect is like slapping soft muddy sand. Areas with
shallow water tables and close to the sea or rivers are easily damaged by liquefaction too.
Earthquake and soil experts say liquefaction is fairly common. It happened after
the massive 9.0 magnitude quake hit eastern Japan in 2011 and numerous other
earthquakes in recent years including the one in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi.

The herons are the long-legged freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae,
with 64 recognized species.
The herons are medium to large-sized birds with long legs and necks. The smallest
species is usually considered the little bittern, which can measure under 30 cm in length.
The largest species of heron is the goliath heron, which stands up to 152 cm tall.
The necks are able to kink in an S-shape, due to the modified shape of the cervical
vertebrae. The neck is able to retract and extend, and is retracted during flight, unlike most
other long-necked birds. The legs are long and strong. In flight, the legs and feet are held
backward.
The bill is generally long and harpoon-like. The bill, as well as other bare parts of the

Charles Martin Hall was a U.S chemist who invented an inexpensive way of making pure
aluminium. Hall made his discovery in 1886, aged 23. He did his research in a laboratory in
his house in Oberlin, Ohio.
The process was known as the Hall-Heroult process because Frenchman Paul Heroult
developed a similar system, at the same time. Before the Hall-Heroult process was invented,
pure aluminium was as expensive as silver, because it was very difficult to refine metal.
Hall‟s discovery changed all that and made it possible for aluminium to be used in all
kinds of ways. The Hall-Heroult process is still used today. It involves electrolysis, where an
electric current splits alumina into pure aluminium and oxygen. This is done at high
temperature so the alumina is melted into liquid, so it will be easier to be formed. It is currently
used in a variety of industries, including construction, aeroplane production, wiring, cook-
ware, and packaging.
