TATA STEEL had implemented Token Ring Based Campus Network for Jamshedpur steel works in
1990. The Network was used for mainframe based application access.
In the year 2001 this network had undergone major revamping for implementation of applications like
office automation and SAP. To provide reliable connectivity with higher throughput, a Campus
networking technology called “GIGABIT ETHERNET” was implemented. The process of implementing
office automation in 80 departments and SAP for the Jamshedpur works needed a connectivity of around
1200 nodes. To increase the capacity of the backbone network Gigabit Ethernet network was
implemented in place of token ring network.
Type of Networks
Campus Network: The network has Gigabit Ethernet as GIS backbone spans across 40 km optical fibres
and covers more than 120 works locations and offices spanning across 20 sq. km
Core Switches: There are two Cisco Catalyst Core switches 6509 being used-one at GIS and the other in
the office of GM, Works.
Distribution Switches: There are Cisco Catalyst 3512, 3524, 3548 Distribution switches that provide
connectivity between core and access switches.
Access Switches: There are Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches that provide connectivity to hosts.
Ø RAS dialup: For accessing the network from home locations, residential users dial up to the
RAS via Tata Steel telephone network. At the moment there are eight numbers which can be
dialled to each of which has 8 ports thus supporting up to 64 residential users at any moment.
Ø Remote Offices: The remote office users are connected via Wide Area Network that
comprises of 18 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) and 43 Virtual Private Network
(VPN).
Ø Mobile Users: Mobile Users are connected via VPN Dial-up.
Ø Internet service Provider: Internet service at 6 Mbps is provided by two ISPs – Tata ISP and
Sify.
Ø OSS Connectivity: OSS Connectivity to Singapore is provided for On-Line SAP support and
training via IPSEC VPN.

VoIP technologies
Voice over IP has been implemented in various ways using both proprietary and open protocols and
standards. Examples of technologies used to implement Voice over Internet Protocol include:
• H.323
• IMS
• SIP
• RTP
H.323 is an umbrella Recommendation from the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T)
that defines the protocols to provide audio-visual communication sessions on any packet network. The
H.323 standard addresses call signaling and control, multimedia transport and control, and bandwidth
control for point-to-point and multi-point conferences.
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an architectural framework for
delivering Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia services. It was originally designed by the wireless standards
body 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), as a part of the vision for evolving mobile networks
beyond GSM.
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signalling protocol, widely
used for setting up and tearing down multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls
over Internet Protocol (IP).
Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) The Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) defines a standardized
packet format for delivering audio and video over the Internet. It was developed by the Audio-Video
Transport Working Group of the IETF and first published in 1996 as RFC 1889, and superseded by RFC
3550 in 2003.
