Ethics in Human Resources

Meaning of Human Resources

 Human resources can be understood in terms of


employing people, developing their
resources,utilizing,maintaining and
compensating,their services and in tune with the job
and organizational requirements with the view to
contribute to the goals of the organization goal
,individuals goals.
Ethics in HRM

 Ethics in HRM indicates the treatment of employees


with ordinary decency and distributive justice.The
ethical business contributes to the business goals as
the employees will feel motivated and they will work
with efficiency and effectiveness.Ethics in HRM
basically deals with the affirmative moral
obligations of the employer towards employees to
maintain equality and equity justice.
Areas of HRM Ethics

 Basic human rights ,civil and employment fight.(Job


security, feedback from the tests)
 Safety in the workplace
 Privacy
 Justifiable treatment of employees(Eg:-Equity and
equal oppurtunity)
 Respect,fairness and honestly based process in the
workplaces.
Role of HR in promoting ethics

 1.Improve recruitment and selection tests.


 Follow recruitment policy that is the identification of
the recruitment needs,monetary aspects,criteria of
selection and preference,etc.
 Follow the situational factors such as economic
factors ,social factors,technological factors,etc.
 Selection must be in a planned manner.
 Avoid illegal questions
 Conduct ethics Training:-
 In a short term process of training given to HR of the
organization to do their work in adherence to the
ethical code of conduct.
 The main advantages are increased
productivity,higher employee morale ,less
supervision,lesser wastage.
 Ensure that there are no pitfalls in performance
appraisal.
 Performance appraisal should be factual and there
should not be any partiality or bias in the attitude
towards the employees.
 4.Rewards and the disciplinary system
 5.imprve and facilitate two way comunication
 6.Avoid any kind of discrimination among the
employees based on the certain factors like
caste,colour,creed,religion,appearances,etc.
 Equal opportunities must be given to every employee
for his advancement and development.
 Measures should be taken for the employee safety
while working in the organization.
Unethical Practices of HRM

 Employers:-
 Creating split in union leaders.
 Biased attitude in selection,transfer,promotion etc.
 Off-shoring and exploiting “cheap” labour markets
 Child Labour
 Reneging on company pension agreements
 Physical violence
 Coercion
 Longer and inflexible working hours
 Putting on more stress on employee for increasing
the productivity
 The perception of consumers of the company is
based upon the company.
 Eventually, based upon the perception about the
company ,the investor’s will effect its share price.
 Similarly,it has been suggested that poor standards
of conduct emanating from the top management
affecting employee motivation and commitment to
the organizational goals.
Employees

 Some of the common problems are:-


 False claim of personal details like age
,qualification,etc.
 Producing false certificates
 Taking decisions as per their convenience.
Government

 Announcing the vacancies and not taking any further


actions.
 Functioning of government offices is not transparent
and reliable.
 Selection commitees will be excessively cautious of
reservation quotas and possible court cases rather
than gaining through the responsibilties.
Fairness and Justice

 As the HR manager you are responsible for fostering


fairness and justice for al the employees and their
organizations.Following points must be considered for
promoting fairness and justice for the organization:-
 1.The organization must realise the intrinsic value of the
employees.
 2.Treat people with dignity and respect and compassion
to foster a trusting work enviroment
 Free of harresment ,intimidation and unlawful
discrimination.
 Giving oppurtunities to the employees equally to
develop their competency skills.
 Bring in the feeling of the organization ,within
employees so that the employees are committed
towards the organization.
 Lying down such policies and procedures which will
ensure equitable treatment for all.
 The individual goals of the employees will be
streamlined with the goals.
 Individual goal of an employee should not obstruct
him to achieve the organizational goals.
 The organization must be fair and honest to its staff.
 Decisions taken by the management must be ethical
and legal.
