Introducing Alpacas with maracas
Display the book front cover for the students to see.
Have the interactive boards on to show brief information about an real alpacas and where
they can be found.
● T: What type of animal you see on the front cover?
It is an Alpaca and can be found at a farm. Do
● T: Why does it say the name “Matt Cosgrove”? Discuss what an author is.
Let’s make a prediction!
● T: What do you think is going to happen in the story? This is called a prediction. A
prediction is when we guess what will happen in
the story before we read it. Our prediction could be right but it could be wrong. It is okay if
our prediction is wrong. To help us make a
prediction we can have a look at the pictures and the blurb.
o Students raise their hand and explain what they think will happen in the story.
o Encourage students to add to answers by saying “I agree with…” or “I disagree with…
because…”

Read the Story

Think Pair and Share

What was your favourite part of the story?
Do you think Alpacas really behave like that?

Lesson 1

Lesson Intent I can complete simple data displays.

Tuning In - Read the book Chrysanthemum (links to online retelling) to your students. The main character, Chrysanthemum, loves her name until she
gets to school. The children tease her because it is too long.

- Discuss the book’s message and how we all have different names of different lengths.

- Introduce graphs as a way we can record data we collect.

Whole Class - Write the numbers 2 through to 14 across the top of the white board. Ask the students to count the amount of letters in their first names.

Intro - One-by-one students should place their name tags under the number representing the amount of letters in their names.

- Advise students that we have made a data display.

- Discussion:

● What is the most common/least amount of letters?

● Who has the shortest name?
● Who has the longest name?

Teaching Support – Students create a pictograph to represent a range of objects found in the teacher’s pencil case (numbers 5 and below, e.g. 4 pens,
3 pencils, 1 eraser). Discuss the objects and count the number for each. Students use cut out pictures representing each object to create
Group their own pictograph in their books.

Ind Tasks Mixed – Students explore the classroom, creating a pictograph of the objects they encounter (e.g. doors, windows, whiteboards). See
template – students draw their own pictures. Extend students by asking them to find and record their own object.

Reflection Students from both groups share the pictographs they created and discuss any similarities or differences between their graphs.

Resources Youtube clip or book of Chrysanthemum (linked), printed student names, pencil case with various stationary items (e.g. pens, pencils,
erasers), pictures of items, pictograph template.

ORIENTATION TO OUT OF REACH
Play a game of “I spy” to familiarise all students with the game
being played in the book, Out of Reach.
Continue playing the game, but asking students to be the “spier”.
Encourage students to identify items that are not to be eaten or
swallowed such as paint, books or crayons.
Explain that the characters in the book play I spy, but the book is
about other things as well.
Looking at the front page, students and teacher discuss:
- What is the title of the book?
- What could it mean?
- What is the book going to be abut/
- What clues on the front cover made you think this?
Read the book. Students confirm their predictions.
Complete “Look out! Timmy’s about!” page of the teach learn act
notebook file.
Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZO-drzD1_M
Complete the “things to be put out of reach” worksheet using the
