Control Systems
DEFINITIONS
Control System
• A control system consists of subsystems and processes (or plants) assembled for the purpose of
controlling the outputs of the processes. For example, a furnace produces heat as a result of the
flow of fuel. In this process; subsystems called fuel valves and fuel - valve actuators are used to
regular the temperature of a room by controlling the heat output from the furnace. Other
subsystems, such as thermostats which act as sensors, measure the room temperature. In its
simplest form, a control system provides an output / response for a given input / stimulus. (Nise,
Norman S. Control System Engineering, 4th ed., New Jersey: John Wiley, 2004 629.8 N724
2004 Reserve Section, University Library)
• A control system is a device or set of devices to manage, command, direct or regulate the
behavior of other devices or systems. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_system)

Control System Toolbox™ software provides tools for systematically analyzing, designing, and
tuning linear control systems. You can specify a linear model of your system, plot its time and
frequency responses to understand how the system behaves, tune the controller parameters using
automated and interactive techniques, and verify performance requirements, such as rise time and
gain/phase margins. Workflow-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs) guide you through each step of
the analysis and design process.
The IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) was founded in l954 as a scientific, engineering and
professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and
control in engineering
