    VISITING THE MUSEUM- ​BERENICE ABBOT 

     
    What dID we expect before visiting the museum? 
    Before  visiting  the  museum,  we  did  not  know Berenice 
    Abbot  neither  the  “Fundació  Mapre”  museum.  In 
    fact,  we  chose  this  exposition  because  it  was  cheap 
    and  close  to  Catalunya’s  square.  We  just  knew  that 
    the  artist  was  a  photographer.  Nevertheless,  we 
    expected  great  art  pieces,  because  normally,  in 
    museums we could find important artists. 
     
    What DID the museum suggest us? 
    In  the  museum,  we  were  surprised:  we  really  liked  the  artist  because  we  felt 
    connected  with  her  perspective  of  seeing  life.  The  gallery  was  divided  in  three 
    different  spaces  related  to  different  topics;  portraits,  cities  and  science. 
    Moreover,  a  fact  that  caught  our  attention  was  that  all  the  images  were 
    black  and  white.  Then,  we  realized  that  although  the  photographies  were  in 
    black  and  white,  they  transmitted  a  modern  point  of  view.  Firstly,  when  we 
    looked  at  the  portraits,  we  were  shocked  by the intention the artist had. The 
    portraits  show  contemporary  authors  and  artists  of  Berenice  Abbot,  whose 
    perception  of  the  genre  concept  was  different;  a common topic nowadays, but a breakdown, controversial topic 
    in past. 

    Secondly,  in  the  images  of  New  York  city  and  Paris,  we  could  appreciate  movement,  a  sense  of life flowing and 
    the  daily  life  of  the  city. The images represent the buildings and the quotidianity of people living there,  showing 
    and transmitting that New York is not “the big buildings”, but that is the city of their inhabitants.  

    Finally,  in  the  science  section,  we  saw 


    images  which  link  science  improvements 
    with  artistic  development.  The  artist 
    shows  the  movement  of  objects  in  a 
    microscopic  level  through  image 
    sequencing.  For  instance,  we  could  see 
    different types of wave movements.  
     
    How was the space treated? 
    The  space  was  formed  by  clear  walls  with  the 
    photographies  of  Abbot  well organized. There were also 
    straight  in  an  horizontal line and well separated by the 
    different  themes  the  author treated such as the female 
    and  male  portraits,  the  New  York  pictures,  the  science 
    one,  etc.  That  kind  of  organization  and  distribution 
    made us feel a sense of relax and calm because everything had an established order and it was not messy at all. 
    Furthermore,  we  would  like  to  emphasize  the  fact  that,  when  there was a picture the author liked the most or 
    it was more impressive, it was alone and bigger so as to give it more protagonism.  
    The  walls  were  painted  with  different  white  and  grey  tonalities  using  a  light  chronomatism.  The  use  of  the 
    light  that  was  illuminating  the  photos  invited  us  to  follow  the  exposition  and  keep  the  order  of  the 
    photographies.  Moreover,  this  illumination  matched  with  the  colour  that the photos had, which we think that 
    might be to “transport” the public eye to the time of the photos. 
    According  to what the pictures showed, we could see a differentiation between the different areas of New York. 
    At  first,  we  could  see  a  lot  of  pictures  including  buildings  and  skyscrapers,  rich  or  famous  places  of  the  city 
    that  tourists  used  to  visit.  However,  as  long  as  we  were  going  through  the  visit,  we  could  observe  that  poorer 
    spots,  commercial ones were also shown. The artist wanted to show the huge difference that NY has, what the 
    rest of the world can see and what only the local ones can see.  
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
    What did we learn? (Personal reflections)

    I  have  gone  to  different  kind  of  museums during all my life time. However, I think I have never been in a “small 
    scale”  museum.  Furthermore,  we  are  used  to  visit  pieces  of  art  as  paintings  or  sculptures  but  we  have  rarely 
    been  educated to appreciate and see photography as another kind of art.  That is why I was kind of shocked. I 
    have  seen  different  documentaries  about  photography  journalist  and  how  photography  can  also  be  a  way  to 
    communicate  the  reality  but  I  have  not  seen  a  museum  about  it.  That is why the images I liked the most were 
    the  portraits  of  people.  These  people  showed,  in  one  way or another, how they decided to broke the established 
    rules  by  society  not  only  talking  about  gender  roles  but  also  about  social  classes. I was amazed to understand 
    the point of view of these people only by watching their portraits.

    I  had  never  gone  to  a  photography  exposition  before  and  it  was  a  positive  and  grateful  experience.  As I went 
    with  my  colleagues,  we  all  made  our  conclusions  and  reflections  about  the posts we were seeing and it was very 
    reachful.  The  thing  that  really  struck  me  about  those  pictures  were  the  ones  about  the  Rockefellers’ 
    construction.  I  could  see  the  progress  about  the magnificent building thanks to the artist and it made me also 
    think  about  how  well  were  the  photographies  made.  It  was  an  epoque  where  the  ICT  resources  were  not  as 
    modern  and  advanced  as  now  and  I  could  see  every  single detail about everything that was happening at that 
    time. Moreover, the part of science and the photo where it was represented a ball falling down also liked me.

    Although  I  have  been  before  in  art  galleries  that  exposed  photographies,  this  exhibition  of  Berenice  Abbott 
    made  me  reflect  about  the  changes  city  suffers daily. One of the images that caught my attention was the one 
    in  which  the  Rockefeller  center  was  being  built.  Moreover,  I  was  surprised  by  the quality of the images taking 
    into  account  that  they  were  shoot  many  years  ago.  The  newest  part  was  very  interesting  and  aesthetic  to 
    watch. The movements of the  photos was amazing.  The most sensitive part of the exposition was the portraits 
    due  to  the  intensity  of  their  feelings  was  transmitted  to  the  viewer.  All  in  all,  I  enjoy the visit to this museum 
    because  I  did  not  know  it  before  but  it  has  been  a  great  pleasure  to see a different museum that it is not too 
    big  but  it  is  able  to  share  this kind of expositions. Moreover, visiting a museum with my peers has been a great 
    experience to share knowledge and different points of view.

    I  was  not  usually  a photo exhibitions consumer. In fact, I have gone other times to Fundació Mapfre to watch 


    paintings  expositions.  However,  I  enjoyed  a  lot  seeing  the  photography  done  by  Abbot.  The  photos  I  liked  the 
    most  were  the  ones  of  the  city  of  New  York.  I  was  so  impressed  about  how she treated the light making that 
    although  the  photos  were  in  black  and  white  you  could guess the clarity or even the season in which the photo 
    was taken.

    Like  all  my  colleagues,  I  was  surprised  by  the  topic  of  portraits.  I think that people through the photographs, 
    show  a  large  part  of  their  personality.  The  author  was really brave to show the personality of these “strange“ 
    people  in  their  epoque.  These  ​portraits  inspired  me  for  the  development  of  the  2D  ​,  because  I  realized  that 
    faces could transmit feelings, sensations and vivences of people.  

    I  really  enjoyed  the  museum  visit.  I  discovered  a  new  artist  and  as  consequence,  a  new  perspective.  Besides, 
    visiting  the  exposition  had  an  extra  interesting  point  because  being  there  with  my  friends  has  helped  me  to 
    attribute some meanings at the photographies

    After  having  visited  this  museum,  I  can  say  that  photography  can  really  be  considered  art.  I  am  used  to  see 
    paintings  or  sculptures  in  museums…  but  this  one  was  different,  and  I  liked  a  lot.  What Abbot showed in the 
    pictures  of  the  New  York  city  really  catched  my  attention.  I  was  amazed  by  the way the pictures were taken, 
    how  she  found  many  different  perspectives  of  one  single  city  or  spot.  Every  picture  has  a  story  behind  and  a 
    reason,  so  I  can  say  that  I  agree  with  most  of  my mates that this section was my favourite. I was impressed 
    by  the  way  beauty  was  shown  in black and white pictures, simple representations can provide a wide variety of 
    sensations and opinions.  

    Finally,  I  would  like  to  say  that  the  idea  of  going  with  my  group  of  colleagues  to  the  museum  was  really  nice 
    because  we could share all our perspectives, opinions and come up with many different conclusions. Moreover, we 
    had a great time together.
