Protect 8.x Installation

Note: IBM has changed the name of their backup software from Tivoli Storage
Manager (TSM) to Spectrum Protect. Version 8.x of the software uses the
Spectrum Protect name, but you may still see references to TSM.

Note: Installation and configuration require Administrator privileges on your Mac.
In many cases, this will require that CSS perform the installation.

You can install Spectrum Protect anytime, but to configure it you must have
ordered UCBackup service – see
https://wikihub.berkeley.edu/display/PIPUB/Getting+Started+with+UCBackup for
instructions. When your UCBackup order is processed, you will receive
registration e-mail that looks like this:

You will need this information to configure Spectrum Protect.

Install the software

1. Download the software from
https://wikihub.berkeley.edu/display/PIPUB/TSM+Software+and+Manuals
We have links to the recommended versions for all currently-supported
versions of MacOS. To check your version, cick on the menu bar and
select “About this Mac”

2. Open the downloaded *.dmg file, and double-click the “IBM Spectrum
Protect.pkg” file.
3. Click on the “Continue” button through the Introduction

and Read Me
 screens.
4. The installer will skip past the Destination Select screen and take you right
to Installation Type:

In general, the chosen drive will be correct. If you have multiple hard drives
and want to install on a particular one, you can click “Change Install
Location” to choose a different drive.
5. Click the Install button. If you’re not running as an Administrator, you’ll be
prompted to enter Administrator credentials:

Note: If you do not enter credentials correctly the first time, the installer
will exit and you will have to re-run the installation.
6. The installer will run for a few minutes:

until it completes:

Click the Close button to exit the installer.


Configure Spectrum Protect

1. Open your Mac’s Applications menu. The location and appearance varies
between Mac versions, but you can usually find it on your Dock, or click a
black spot on your desktop to make Finder active and type zA (Command-
Shift-A).

2. Find the IBM Spectrum Protect folder and click to see the Spectrum Protect
applications. Again, the appearance may vary on different MacOS versions.

3. Open “IBM Spectrum Protect for Admiistrators” (the robot icon). Select
“IBM Spectrum Protect” from the list and click OK:

You will again be prompted to enter Administrator privileges for your Mac.
4. After a moment, the Client Configuration Wizard window will appear:

Click Next.
5. You will be taken to the Options File Task screen:

If this is the first time you are installing TSM/Spectrum Protect on your
Mac, or you want to perform a clean install, select “Create a new options
file” and click Next. If you are upgrading a Mac which already has
TSM/Spectrum Protect installed and working, the “Update my options file”
option should be available. Note: These installation instructions assume
you are setting up a new file.
6. On the Client Node Name screen, enter the Node Name from your
UCBackup registration e-mail, which will usually end with “_MAC” and then
 click Next:

7. Select TCP/IP on the Communication screen and click Next:

8. On the TCP/IP Options screen, enter the Server Name and Port Number
from the UCBackup registration e-mail and click Next:

9. The Server Stanza is used to distinguish between multiple Spectrum Protect
configurations on the same computer. This is very rare, so for most people
the name doesn’t really matter. We recommend “UCBACKUP” but you are
 free to choose whatever you want.

10.The next screen allows you to start with IBM’s recommended list of
excluded files and directories. Click Next to use the suggestions. Note:
Only highlighted entries will be added to your configuration – if you
accidentally click on one of the lines, the others will be un-selected and you
 will need to click Select All to re-select everything before clicking Next.

11.The next screen will allow you to choose file types to exclude. On this
screen, file types are NOT automatically selected.
Many of the file types listed here - including audio, video, and image files –
can be large (increasing your UCBackup bill) but may be exactly the files you
want backed up.
To select multiple entries, click the first one, then hold down the z
(Command) key while clicking others.

12.The next screen gives you one last chance to go back and change selections.
If you are happy with your choices, click Apply.

13. Your options will be saved, and then you will be prompted to log in to the
UCBackup server. The User id field should already contain your Node
Name; enter the Node Password from your UCBackup registration e-mail.
Note: If you copy-and-paste the password from the registration e-mail, be
 careful that you don’t also copy blank spaces around the password.

14.You will next be prompted to change your password by re-entering the old
password and entering a new password twice. Password requirements are
listed in your registration e-mail.

15.Click Finish on the confirmation screen:

16.You will be taken to the main Spectrum Protect window.

17.On the Edit menu, select Client Preferences:

18.Go to the Authorization tab and select Password Generate. This will allow
the Spectrum Protect client to remember your password, so that you don’t
have to manually enter it every time you reboot your Mac. Don’t worry
about the Location field that appears; the default password file location is
 fine.

19.Optional but highly recommended: On the Backup tab, select “Compress
objects” and un-select “Continue compressing if object grows” –
compression will reduce your UCBackup costs.
This screen will also list any additional drives connected to your computer,
which you may want to exclude from backups. We have seen a lot of
UCBackuop customers surprised by high bills after unintentionally backing
 up external drives.

20.You can browse other tabs to further customize your Spectrum Connect
configuration. When you are done, click OK to write out your updated
configuration file. You may be prompted to re-enter your Node Password
at this point, after setting the Password Generate option.
21.You should be back at the main Spectrum Protect window. If you were not
prompted to re-enter your Node Password, or if you just want to verify that
Spectrum Protect is working, click Backup. You should be prompted for a
 password if you were not already, and then taken to the Backup window:

22.You can check “Local” and click the Backup button to run a full backup, or
you can expand the arrow next to Local to “drill down” and select a small
directory or individual files for your test backup.
23.Once you click Backup, you will see a progress window showing you files
are they are backed up:

24.When complete, the completion and Status Report windows will open:

Click OK on both to exit Backup.
25.Now, set up Spectrum Protect to run in the background for scheduled
backups.
Exit out of all Spectrum Protect windows, and go back to Applications ->
IBM Spectrum Protect -> IBM Spectrum Protect Tools for Administrators.
This time, select “Start the Client Acceptor Daemon”
